  16.   JESUS WASHES HIS DISCIPLES' FEET

  19. John 13:1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the
  20. time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having
  21. loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full
  22. extent of his love.
  23.  
  24. John 13:2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already
  25. prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus.
  26.  
  27. John 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his
  28. power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
  29.  
  30. John 13:4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and
  31. wrapped a towel around his waist.
  32.  
  33. John 13:5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash
  34. his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped
  35. around him.
  36.  
  37. John 13:6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you
  38. going to wash my feet?"
  39.  
  40. John 13:7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but
  41. later you will understand."
  42.  
  43. John 13:8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus
  44. answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
  45.  
  46. John 13:9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my
  47. hands and my head as well!"

  49. John 13:10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to
  50. wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not
  51. every one of you."

  53. John 13:11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why
  54. he said not every one was clean.

  56. John 13:12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his
  57. clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done
  58. for you?" he asked them.

  60. John 13:13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that
  61. is what I am.

  63. John 13:14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,
  64. you also should wash one another's feet.

  66. John 13:15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done
  67. for you.

  69. John 13:16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his
  70. master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

  80. chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread
  81. has lifted up his heel against me.'

  83. John 13:19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it
  84. does happen you will believe that I am He.

  86. John 13:20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts
  87. me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me."

  89. John 13:21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and
  90. testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me."

  92. John 13:22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know
  93. which of them he meant.

  95. John 13:23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining
  96. next to him.

  98. John 13:24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him
  99. which one he means."

  101. John 13:25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is
  102. it?"

  104. John 13:26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this
  105. piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the
  106. piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.

  108. John 13:27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.
  109. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him,
  110.  
  111. John 13:28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to
  112. him.

  114. John 13:29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was
  115. telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something
  116. to the poor.

  118. John 13:30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it
  119. was night.

  122.   JESUS PREDUCTS PETER'S DENIAL

  125. John 13:31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man
  126. glorified and God is glorified in him.

  128. John 13:32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in
  129. himself, and will glorify him at once.

  131. John 13:33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You
  132. will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now:
  133. Where I am going, you cannot come.

  135. John 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have
  136. loved you, so you must love one another.

  138. John 13:35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you
  139. love one another."

  141. John 13:36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus
  142. replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow
  143. later."

  145. John 13:37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay
  146. down my life for you."

  148. John 13:38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life
  149. for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will
  150. disown me three times!
