  15.   JESUS ANOINTED AT BETHANY

  18. John 12:1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany,
  19. where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
  20.  
  21. John 12:2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served,
  22. while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
  23.  
  24. John 12:3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive
  25. perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her
  26. hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
  27.  
  28. John 12:4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to
  29. betray him, objected,
  30.  
  31. John 12:5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the
  32. poor? It was worth a year's wages."
  33.  
  34. John 12:6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but
  35. because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help
  36. himself to what was put into it.

  38. John 12:7 "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "It was intended that she
  39. should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
  40.  
  41. John 12:8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not
  42. always have me."
  43.  
  44. John 12:9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was
  45. there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom
  46. he had raised from the dead.

  48. John 12:10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,

  50. John 12:11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to
  51. Jesus and putting their faith in him.

  54.   THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY

  57. John 12:12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast
  58. heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.

  60. John 12:13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
  61. "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed
  62. is the King of Israel!"
  63.  
  64. John 12:14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is
  65. written,

  67. John 12:15 "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is
  68. coming, seated on a donkey's colt."

  70. John 12:16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only
  71. after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been
  72. written about him and that they had done these things to him.

  74. John 12:17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from
  75. the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.

  77. John 12:18 Many people, because they had heard that he had given this
  78. miraculous sign, went out to meet him.

  80. John 12:19 So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting
  81. us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"

  84.   JESUS PREDICTS HIS DEATH

  87. John 12:20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to
  88. worship at the Feast.

  90. John 12:21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee,
  91. with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus."

  93. John 12:22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told
  94. Jesus.

  96. John 12:23 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be
  97. glorified.
  98.  
  99. John 12:24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the
  100. ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it
  101. produces many seeds.

  103. John 12:25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who
  104. hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

  106. John 12:26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my
  107. servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

  109. John 12:27 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father,
  110. save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to
  111. this hour.

  113. John 12:28 Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven,
  114. "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."

  116. John 12:29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had
  117. thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

  119. John 12:30 Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine.

  121. John 12:31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince
  122. of this world will be driven out.

  124. John 12:32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all
  125. men to myself."

  127. John 12:33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.

  129. John 12:34 The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the
  130. Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must
  131. be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?"

  133. John 12:35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just
  134. a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness
  135. overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is
  136. going.

  138. John 12:36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you
  139. may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left
  140. and hid himself from them.

  142.   THE JEWS CONTINUE IN THEIR UNBELIEF

  145. John 12:37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in
  146. their presence, they still would not believe in him.

  148. John 12:38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord,
  149. who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been
  150. revealed?"

  152. John 12:39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah
  153. says elsewhere:

  155. John 12:40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so
  156. they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their
  157. hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them."

  159. John 12:41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke
  160. about him.

  162. John 12:42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed
  163. in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their
  164. faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;

  166. John 12:43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

  168. John 12:44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does
  169. not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
