- Depends on the size of the bay, I suppose. It also brings to mind the
- confusion that flatlanders experience when they assume that Houghton
- is next to Houghton Lake. A college roommate used to work in a gas
- station just off US-27 near Clare. He had an encounter that went
- along the lines of:
-
- "Where you headed?"
- "Michigan Tech. We're taking our
- daughter."
- Noticing the time, "Ah. You
- looking for a place to spend the
- night? Around Grayling."
- "Oh no, we've got reservations at a
- place near the university."
- "Uh...How far do you think it is
- to Houghton?"
- "It's just another 40 minutes or so."
- "Sir, that's Houghton Lake.
- Houghton is another 8 hours after
- that."
- "What?"
- "It's in the U.P. At the west
- end."
- "Look, it's right here on the map!"
- "No, that's Houghton Lake.
- Houghton is way over here."
-
- At that point the father started stammering, the mother started fuming
- and the daughter got slightly hysterical. They called MTU, learned that
- they could arrive a day late without serious consequence, and calmed
- down a bit.
