- Asides from my 45 mile hike this July on the Lake Superior Trail, with
- a side trip or two to a few of the falls and Lake of the Clouds via
- the Escarpment Trail:
-
- The up side:
- Unsurpassed scenery along both trail systems. Tremendous Park Staff. Tons
- of Wildlife. An easy drive from well-stocked grocery stores. Solitude in
- abundance.
-
- The flip side:
- Poorly maintained trails. The few flat spots suitable for pitching a tent
- lack adequate drainage or padding. Muddy trails. Slippery ascents. Heavy
- clouds of bugs between June 1 and August 1. Most trails slog through long
- stretches of marsh with rotted out planking serving as bridges.
-
- Summary:
- Not a good place to introduce a newbie to serious hiking.
- Experienced hikers who are prepared to deal with water, cold, difficult
- footing, Northwoods biting insects, should run to their nearest library
- and get the Park Headquarters Address for information. This is a really
- unique place, and shouldn't be missed. Be prepared to spend at least three
- days there- nearly all of the sights worth seeing will take some time on
- foot to reach.
