- The experience that people seem to be talking about here has to do
- with Phosphenes which are geometric patterns/blobs that are the
- result of "other" signals sent from the eyes going to the optic
- nerves. These can be from lack of stimulus (eg. being in a totally
- dark environment), pressure on the eyeball, flashing lights at certain
- frequencies, or physical exertion.
- I have a Scientific American article (from 1982 - I can find the exact
- reference if people want it) that explains this and describes some
- experiments to try at home.
- My most bizarre experience with phosphenes was when lying down after an
- exhausting hike to the top of a hill. While looking up at the sky I
- noticed - superimposed against it's clear, blue - a slowly turning
- pattern, composed of diamond-shaped tiles, formed into a "swirl". I
- sat and watched it for what seemed like 5 minutes, but once I had
- "recovered" from the climb it disappeared from my vision.
- I realise that this doesn't have much to do with dreams but thought
- that this information might be useful to those asking.
