  19. Here's my take on it.  Make of it what you will.

  22. The Lovers means choice.  Discrimination.  A man stands
  23. between an older woman (his mother?) and a younger woman
  24. (his lover?).  He must decide.
  25.  
  26. The imagery, for me, evokes the apple and the Garden of Eden.
  27. The Querent must choose:  do you eat the apple?  I take a
  28. decidedly non-Xtian approach.  The apple (the younger woman) is
  29. experience, action, questioning, self-awareness-- the dangerous
  30. course that leads to greater rewards.  Refusing the apple
  31. (choosing the older woman) is a safe course, but you never get
  32. to learn the difference between good & evil.  It is obedience,
  33. safety, innocence. You don't grow.

  35. Some decks omit the older woman.  The Aquarian deck & the Robin
  36. Wood deck are examples.  This imagery is slightly different.
  37. The implications are of dualities that must be united, opposites
  38. that must be reconciled... or that you must choose between.  The
  39. Norse tarot deck makes it more explicit:  Odin's wife chooses
  40. between her husband & a magical necklace.
