- The subject line really caught my imagination. So I'll throw in my $0.02,
- though it's not so much of a follow-up to the original artical.
-
- I'm a Chinese student. From what I've seen among my fellows, both in China
- and here in the US, it is plain undeniable that there is a widespread
- prejudice against blacks among Chinese, including myself. I can't say majority
- because I've never done any record-keeping. But my impression about the scope
- is scary. Too often I've heard people talk about blacks in plain racial
- language with straight faces. I try to point it out to them whenever possible.
- Yet out on the streets at night, my heart-beat would definitely be faster if
- I found out that the guy after me were black.
-
- As far as I can tell, racial/ethnic prejudice is a part of the human nature.
- Just look at a homogenious society like China or Japan. Kids there can't
- find people with different skin colors. No matter. They devide themselves
- according to parents' social status, urban or rural origin, quality of their
- cloths, etcetc. People need to feel good/special about themselves. For this
- same reason, they creat various groups, identify with some, and pick on
- others. Just look, you'll be surprised how cruel some innocent little kids
- can be.
-
- There's nothing we can do about this nature part. The best we can hope for
- is desegregation. When people know each other personally, they are much more
- likely to recognize they belong to the same, one-and-only human race. I've
- gotten to know a few blacks reasonably well. And I found each and every of
- them decent and honest and lovable and...well, just like me myself. That has
- helped me tremendously to wipe out my own prejudice. In fact, I suspect that
- most of this prejudice is FEAR and DISTRUST deep down in the naked core.
-
- With this inheretant tendency toward prejudice, it is not surprising that any
- bias in the culture or media is absorbed with amazing efficiency. Compare it
- with trying to make people remember how to expand (a+b)**2. To battle against
- racial/ethnic prejudice/discrimination, we have to face some discouragingly
- steep and long hills.
-
- It doesn't help a bit to win this battle if we spend all our time pointing
- fingers at each other. Malcolm X's approach might have helped breaking the
- ice. But I tend to think that today's America is much more open-minded and
- reasonable, at least for a healthy majority, than 30 years ago. Instead of
- letting go of our rage, fear, and distrust, we could go much farther if only
- we sit down, talk to each other, listen to each other, and admit that we all
- have our own share of the problem. I talked to a skinhead before. And I'm
- looking forward to talking to anyone who thinks asians/blacks/whites/hispanics
- are a worthless POS.
