- Amen, Sister Bonnie. My reaction to this socially-approved stereotyping
- of Southerners generally, and Appalachians in particular, has been to
- become a militant. I work with a bunch of ecclesiastically deprived
- Northern Americans (my Mamaw raised me to call 'em damnyankees, but these
- are the politically correct 1990s and I like to think that I can change
- with the times). When one of these EDNAs makes a disparaging remark
- about the South--and especially about Southern accents--I just remind
- them that, as the saying goes, "Delta is ready when you are." How I
- survived 21 months in Champaign, Illinois is a mystery known only to God.
