  45.         The SPEA SOWTIME PLUS is a product that offers significantly en-
  46.         hanced features compared to other standard VGA graphic and accela-
  47.         rator boards.
  48.  
  49.         Die SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS combines graphic and video playback functions
  50.         on one board and offers
  51.  
  52.         - higher resolutions  and
  53.         - higher refresh rates
  54.         - accelerated scaling and playback of digital video as there are
  55.           MPEG, Video for Windows und VideoCD; as well as
  56.         - the display of a video picture from an external, analogue video
  57.           signal source in realtime
  58.  
  59.         Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the features
  60.         provided by the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS if the other components of your
  61.         system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used, also comply
  62.         with the specifications of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS.
  63.  
  64.         (Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
  65.         SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
  66.         specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768.)

  70.         ║    Preparations Before Installing The SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS    ║
  71.         ╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

  73.         Some hardware preparations are necessary before you may watch your
  74.         favorite movie from a VideoCD.
  75.  
  76.         PCI bus:
  77.         Especially important is the correct configuration of your PCI mother-
  78.         board. The PCI Interrupt A (INT A) must be assigned to one of the
  79.         available system interrupts (e.g. 10).
  80.  
  81.         1. Please check in the manual of your motherboard whether a jumper
  82.         needs to be set. Jumpers are often used to assign system interrupts
  83.         to either an ISA of PCI slot. Assign the interrupt to the PCI slot
  84.         to be used with the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS.
  85.  
  86.         2. Start the SETUP program of your PC and assign the system inter-
  87.         rupt to INT A for the PCI expansion slot the SPEA SHOWTIME Plus will
  88.         be installed in. For newer motherboards you can also use the Trigger
  89.         method for setting the interrupt. Select 'Level' or 'Auto' for the
  90.         slot you will use.
  91.  
  92.         Most recent motherboards work with a PLUG & PLAY BIOS. If you have
  93.         such a PCI system, its BIOS will do the interrupt configuration
  94.         automatically.
  95.  
  96.         VL bus:
  97.         The configuration of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS VL will automatically be
  98.         started during the software installation with the program STINIT.
  99.         Select a free system interrupt and confirm your selection with the
  100.         ENTER key. We recommend interrupt #10 for the VL board.
  101.         Note: Reserved interrupts will be marked by the program.
  102.

  105.         ║                Windows Driver Installation                  ║
  106.         ╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

  108.         The installation of the software is done in two major steps.
  109.  
  110.         1. Installation of basic software under DOS
  111.  
  112.         Insert the diskette labelled "Basic Installation" in drive A:,
  113.         enter
  114.                  A:
  115.                  INSTALL
  116.         and follow the instructions of the installation program.
  117.         (Only when floppy disk installation, does not apply to CD ROM install.)
  118.  
  119.         Please note :
  120.         -------------
  121.         Several hardware tests are performed at the end of the installation
  122.         procedure. The installation will be aborted with an error message
  123.         if the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS could not be successfully installed in your
  124.         system. In this case, check again your system configuration.
  125.  
  126.         The hardware test may be started again by entering the following
  127.         command:
  128.                  \SPEA\SHOWTIME\STTEST
  129.  
  130.         The test options
  131.                  Composite Video  and
  132.                  SVHS-Video
  133.         will always display an error message if no device is connected to
  134.         the Video In connector of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS. This is not a
  135.         misfunction of the board.
  136.  
  137.         2. Installation of the Windows drivers:
  138.  
  139.         Start Windows in VGA mode. Insert the disk labelled "MCI Windows
  140.         Drivers for MPEG" in drive A:, open the pull down menu File in the
  141.         Program Manager, select Execute and enter
  142.                  A:\SETUP
  143.        (Only when floppy disk installation, does not apply to CD ROM install.)
  144.  
  145.         Follow the instructions of the setup program. The SPEA Windows driver
  146.         will be active after Windows has been restarted.
  147.  
  148.         Attention!
  149.         ----------
  150.         The SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS allows the use of hardware accelerated video
  151.         functions only with a limitted number of resolutions and refresh
  152.         rates. To use this functionality, start V7SETUP from the SPEA group,
  153.         activate the 'Enable 8 bit Hardware support' button and select the
  154.         desired resolution. Digital videos may be displayed after Windows
  155.         has been restarted.

  159.         ║    Drivers / Utilities Installation For Other Applications  ║

  162.         Besides the utilities and driver software that is required to use
  163.         the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS under Windows, drivers for OS/2 are also
  164.         delivered with the product (disk labelled "Drivers for OS/2).
  165.  
  166.         Please note:
  167.         ------------
  168.         These drivers support the graphic functions of the SPEA SHOWTIME
  169.         PLUS under OS/2 WPS and WIN-OS/2, but do not support the hardware
  170.         accelarated video functions.
  171.  
  172.         Please refer to the user manual for details on driver installation.
  173.  
  174.  
  175.         Drivers for Windows NT and DOS applications like AutoCAD and Micro-
  176.         Station are optionally available for the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS.They can
  177.         be downloaded free of charge from the SPEA Bulletin Board. Diskettes
  178.         may also be ordered (refer to the SPEA ExpertLine information for
  179.         phone and fax numbers of the bulletin board and diskette order ser-
  180.         vice).
  181.  
  182.         Accelerated graphic display is possible with these drivers, the hard-
  183.         ware accelarated video display is not supported.

  187.         ║                    Monitor Selection                        ║

  190.         As already mentioned above, the graphic monitor used with the SPEA
  191.         SHOWTIME PLUS must comply to the specifications of this board. Only
  192.         then can the full functionality of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS be used.
  193.  
  194.  
  195.         During software installation you will asked for the maximum hori-
  196.         zontal frequency of your monitor. This entry is only of importance
  197.         if you use one the optional DOS drivers mentioned above (e.g the
  198.         AutoCAD driver). In this case, add the following entry to your
  199.         AUTOEXEC.BAT file :
  200.  
  201.                  CALL C:\SPEA\SHOWTIME\INIT.BAT STMODE
  202.  
  203.         The selection of refresh rates under Windows is only done with the
  204.         utility program V7SETUP.
  205.  
  206.                                 *** IMPORTANT ***
  207.  
  208.         Please only select parameters that your monitor is specified for.
  209.         Your monitor may be seriously damaged, if it is constantly driven
  210.         with parameters which are not within the range of its specification.
  211.         If you change your monitor you have to compare the specification
  212.         and, if necessary, to change the resolutions / refresh rates using
  213.         STMODE!
  214.

  216.         ║                    Known Limitations                        ║
  217.         ╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

  219.     (1) It is not possible to use two or more active VGA boards in one PC at
  220.         the same time.
  221.         In case you want to use the SHOWTIME PLUS board in a PC that has a
  222.         VGA interface integrated on the motherboard, then this integrated
  223.         VGA interface must be disabled before the SHOWTIME PLUS may be used.
  224.  
  225.     (2) The software delivered with the product supports hardware accelerated
  226.         video only under Windows. Drivers for DOS will eventually become
  227.         available.
  228.  
  229.     (3) The SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS supports audio only for VideoCD and MPEG files,
  230.         but not under Video for Windows.
  231.         In this case a sound board like the V7-media fx must be additionally
  232.         installed in your system.
  233.  
  234.     (4) Please use only video CDs labelled 'VideoCD'.
  235.  
  236.     (5) A program code responsible for audio is written to the SHOWTIME PLUS
  237.         every time an MPEG file is called for the first time after a system
  238.         re-boot.
  239.         It may happen that the code is not loaded after a cold start. No
  240.         sound will then be heard.
  241.         Quit Windows in this case, change to the directory \SPEA\SHOWTIME
  242.         and start the batch file SOUND.BAT.
  243.  
  244.     (6) If you use Windows for Workgroups and start it without network sup-
  245.         port ( 'WIN /N' ), then it may happen that Windows does not start
  246.         correctly when low display resolutions are used. This limitation
  247.         does not exist when Windows is started with 'WIN'.
  248.  
  249.     (7) The compressor format 'Indeo Raw' only works until the format 120x90.
  250.         Anything larger will probably lead to system instability up to 
  251.         system crash.
  252.         The same effekt can be appear in the format 'Sinepak Codec By 
  253.         Supermatch' in true color mode.
  254.         Please note the order while selecting the compressor:
  255.               1. choice size and pixel depth
  256.               2. choice compressor 
  257.         If you don't follow this order the wrong compressor can be choosen.
  258.

  261.         ║                Corrections To The User Manual               ║

  264.     (1) The option "HIGHSCAN" may not be used with the memory manager
  265.         EMM386.EXE.
  266.  
  267.     (2) Do not use SMARTDRIVE.EXE with the CD drive.
  268.  
  269.     (3) For the CD drive, use the driver MSCDEX.EXE v.2.23 or higher
  270.  
  271.     (4) A CD-ROM drive is obviously necessary in real multi media system.
  272.         As the VideoCD format is rather new compared to data format, your
  273.         CD drive may not be able to read data from a VideoCD. Updating the
  274.         driver software for your drive may help in this case.
  275.  
  276.         The following CD-ROM drives have been found to operate without
  277.         problems when the SHOWTIME PLUS had been tested in our Quality
  278.         Assurance department :
  279.  
  280.         Sony CDU-33a              Sony SLCD Device Driver Vers. 171a
  281.         Mitsumi FX 001D           CD-ROM Device Driver MTMCDAS Vers. 01.1b
  282.         Panasonic CR 562b/CR 563c CD-ROM Device Driver CDMKE Vers. 4.01
  283.         Matsushita CR-562-x       CD-ROM Device Driver CDMKE Vers. 4.01
  284.         Toshiba 3401              Future Domain CD-ROM Device Vers. 2.21/260
  285.  
  286.         (More drives will be tested)
  287.  
  288.     (5) About 500 KB conventional memory is required to successfully
  289.         read VideoCDs. Error messages like "CD ROM drive can not be read" or
  290.         others that describe a misfunction of the SPEA MCI drivers may be
  291.         displayed if not enough memory is available.
  292.         In this case, remove all drivers not essentially necessary for the
  293.         operation of your system from CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, then re-
  294.         start your system.
