KODAK BROWSER Photo CD Catalog Software provides a menu-driven interface that allows content files stored on CD-ROM discs or Kodak Photo CD discs bearing the Photo CD symbol (shown on the cover) to be displayed in a contact sheet window, sorted and searched using a predefined database, edited in a photo window, displayed in a slide show, and saved to a new format.
* The User's Guide is split between two README files, README1 and README2. It is recommended that you print both files to
have available as reference before operating the Browser software.

On-line Help and Documentation
Getting Started is not intended to be a complete reference manual. It provides only an overview of KODAK BROWSER software and platform-specific installation procedures. For detailed instructions on using specific software features, menus, commands, and procedures, refer to the on-line Help. You may access the on-line Help from the Apple menu for the Macintosh version, or from the Help menu for the Windows version.
Memory Required to Display Images
Images can be displayed in a photo window in any resolution provided on your CD-ROM disc. The approximate amount of memory required to display one full-color (24-bit) photo in a photo window is 30 percent greater than the actual size of the file.
You also require an additional amount of RAM to load thumbnails in a contact sheet window. The amount of RAM required depends on the number of thumbnails being displayed.
Copying a high-resolution photo to the Clipboard requires a large amount of memory. If you do not have sufficient application memory for the size of the photo being copied, save the photo as a file and then import it into your application, rather than copying it to the Clipboard.
Using the Contact Sheet Window
You use the Open command from the File menu to open a catalog. You use the contact sheet window to view, assemble, and search images stored on the CD-ROM disc.
Thumbnails display in the contact sheet window using the publisher defined settings. KODAK BROWSER software also provides File menu commands that you can use to modify contact sheet window display preferences. Refer to the platform-specific section of this booklet for instructions on changing display preferences.
If all the thumbnails are not visible in the contact sheet window, you can see additional thumbnails by using the window scroll bar or by resizing the contact sheet window.
KODAK BROWSER software allows you to create a catalog using all the thumbnails displayed in the contact sheet window, thumbnails displayed in the contact sheet window as a result of your search, or specific thumbnails selected from a catalog displayed in the contact sheet window. You use
Ñ Save As from the File menu to save a catalog of all displayed thumbnails.
Ñ Save Selected As from the File menu to save a catalog of thumbnails displayed as a result of a
search or to save a catalog of specific thumbnails selected from the contact sheet window.
Displaying Thumbnails
When you open the catalog provided on your CD-ROM disc, KODAK BROWSER software displays the thumbnails in the order in which they were placed on the disc. You can, however, change the display order by selecting a thumbnail, holding down the mouse button, and dragging it to a new position in the contact sheet window. You can also use the Sort By fields from the Display menu to reorder thumbnail display.
KODAK BROWSER software also provides a number of Display menu commands that you can use to change the display of thumbnails in the contact sheet window. Menu commands allow you to display all the thumbnails or only those thumbnails that are selected or marked.
You can also double-click a thumbnail from the contact sheet window and view it in a photo window at full resolution. If the thumbnail is a Photo CD image, prior to double-clicking, you can use Set PCD Resolution from the Display menu to change the display size of the photo and Set PCD Color to change the display image type.
You can crop a photo displayed in a photo window, copy it to the Clipboard, or save it to your hard disk in one of several file types. Refer to on-line Help for instructions about using these features.
Selecting Thumbnails
KODAK BROWSER software provides keyboard and mouse actions, as well as Display/Select menu commands, for selecting thumbnails from the active contact sheet window. All selected thumbnails display in the contact sheet window with a highlighted border.
KODAK BROWSER software provides menu commands that allow you to select all thumbnails or to select only marked or unmarked thumbnails. You can also invert your selection, which deselects thumbnails already selected and selects those thumbnails that were not previously selected.
You can also select a single thumbnail or multiple thumbnails in the contact sheet window using the keyboard and mouse. To select
Ñ A Single Thumbnail╤Click the thumbnail.
Ñ Multiple Thumbnails╤Hold down the SHIFT key and click each of the thumbnails that you want
to include in the selection.
To deselect individual thumbnails, hold down the SHIFT key and click the thumbnails that you want to exclude from your selection. To deselect all the thumbnails, choose Deselect from the Display/Select menu. The border around all deselected thumbnails dims.

Each thumbnail displays in the window. You use Thumbnail Layout from the File menu to customize the contact sheet window. You can change thumbnail display size, background, and text color, decorator frame preferences, and assign up to four labels to appear below the thumbnail.
Searching the Catalog Database
KODAK BROWSER software allows you to search the CD-ROM disc(s) using the predefined database provided by the CD-ROM disc publisher. You can search the entire catalog, as well as narrow or enlarge the results of the search.
You use the Search command from the Display menu (Command╨F for Macintosh version or CTRL+F for Windows version) to determine how you want the results of the search returned, to set the scope of the search, and to construct search statements.
The results of a search can be displayed, counted, selected, or marked. By default, KODAK BROWSER software displays the results of a search unless you choose one of the other options. You use the search results pop-up menu to change how KODAK BROWSER software returns the results of the search.
Ñ Display shows all thumbnails in the contact sheet window that match the search statement.
Ñ Count counts all thumbnails that match the search statement and displays the count in the
upper-right corner of the Search dialog box.
Ñ Select highlights the border of each of the thumbnails that matches the search statement. Any
previously selected thumbnails are deselected unless they match the search statement.
Ñ Mark places a checkmark (3) on each of the thumbnails that matches the search statement. Any
previously marked thumbnails also remain marked.
If you selected Select or Mark from the search results pop-up menu, you need to choose Display Selected or Display Marked from the Display menu in order to display these thumbnails in the contact sheet window.
To select the scope of the search, you use the Options pop-up menu for the Macintosh version, or the "all images contained in" list box for the Windows version. The search options are:
Ñ Search Entire Catalog conducts a search of the entire active catalog.
Ñ Search Displayed List conducts a search only of the thumbnails displayed as a result of the
previous search. You can use these thumbnails for a new search and include additional search
qualifications. KODAK BROWSER software narrows the selection of displayed thumbnails to
only those matching the new search statement.
Ñ Add to Displayed List keeps the thumbnails displayed in the contact sheet window and enlarges
the selection by searching the entire catalog using a new search statement. KODAK BROWSER
software adds thumbnails matching the new search statement to the displayed list.
KODAK BROWSER software allows you to create simple or sophisticated search statements, depending on the results you want to achieve. As a general rule, the larger the catalog, the more you will need to designate additional qualifiers to narrow the search results.
The Search dialog box provides three columns that you use to construct your search statement. The columns include:
Ñ A search field list box (Column 1) that controls which fields are used to conduct the search.
KODAK BROWSER software provides three options:
File Fields contains technical information about the thumbnails, such as file size or creation date.
Catalog Fields lists fields defined by the disc publisher.
All Fields combines the File Fields and Catalog Fields into one list.
Ñ A verb list box (Column 2) that contains a list of search verbs. For the Macintosh version, the
list changes depending on the field selected. KODAK BROWSER software defaults to the most
likely choice for the selected field.
Ñ An entry area (Column 3) that provides a text edit box so that you can key in a subject
descriptor to complete the search statement. Some fields also generate an entry helper menu
or list that allows you to use the mouse to select a subject descriptor.
NOTE: KODAK BROWSER software is case-sensitive. Text entries need to use the indexing style
established by the disc publisher.
The Search dialog box contains two buttons (Or and And) used to connect simple search statements, the Query Link pop-up menu (for the Macintosh version) or the Connect Lines By list box (for the Windows version) that contains three conjunctions (Or, And, and But Not) used to connect sophisticated search statements, and the Add Query button (for the Macintosh version) or the New Line button (for the Windows version) used to add multiple lines to the search statement.
The Search dialog box provides the foundation for constructing search statements. To construct a simple search statement, you select a field name from Column 1, a verb phrase from Column 2, and a subject descriptor from Column 3. An example of a simple search statement is ╥Colors equals PURPLE.╙
A sophisticated search statement provides the ability to search on more than one field and to include more than one search verb and/or subject descriptor as search qualifiers. You use the conjunctions Or, And, and But Not from the Query Link pop-up menu (for the Macintosh version) or the Connect Lines By list box (for the Windows version) to connect the elements of a sophisticated search statement.
Ñ And links words or phrases of equal rank and returns thumbnails that match all the criteria
connected by And.
Ñ Or broadens the search to retrieve thumbnails that meet either of the two surrounding search
criteria.
Ñ But Not selects thumbnails that meet a certain set of criteria, while excluding those
thumbnails that follow the But Not criteria.
Two examples of sophisticated search statements are:
Colors equals BLUE And Scene contains BEACH
Location ends with USA But Not Orientation equals HORIZONTAL
To construct a simple search statement:
Step 1: Choose Search from the Display menu (Command╨F for the Macintosh version or CTRL+F
for the Windows version).
Step 2: Use the menu or list box at the top of the Search dialog box to specify whether you want
to display, count, select, or mark the results of the search.
Step 3: Select the scope of the search from the Options pop-up menu (for the Macintosh version)
or the "all images contained in" list box (for the Windows version). If this is the first
search of the catalog, select Search Entire Catalog. You use the other two options to
restrict or expand the results of the previous search.
Step 4: Select one category from the field list pop-up menu (Macintosh version) or field list
(Windows version). Field list categories include File Fields, Catalog Fields, and All Fields.
Step 5: Construct a simple search statement by selecting a field name from Column 1, a verb
phrase from Column 2, and a subject descriptor from Column 3. You can also key in a
value in the text edit box. Note that Date and Number fields contain only a text edit box.
Step 6: Use the conjunction radio buttons (Macintosh version) or the Connect option buttons
(Windows version) located above Column 3 to connect multiple subject descriptors.
Step 7: Click Display, Count, Select, or Mark depending on the selection made in Step 2.
To construct a sophisticated search statement:
Step 1: Follow Steps 1 through 5 for constructing a simple search statement.
Step 2: Select a conjunction from the Query Link pop-up menu (for the Macintosh version) or the
Connect Lines By list box (for the Windows version).
Step 3: Click Add Query (for the Macintosh version) or New Line (for the Windows version) to
display a new search statement line.
Step 4: Select a field name, a verb phrase, and a subject descriptor or key in a value in the text
edit box.
Step 5: Click Display, Count, Select, or Mark.
You can save the displayed results of your search by choosing Save Selected As from the File menu or by creating a new catalog. To create a new catalog, choose New from the File menu. To transfer the selected thumbnails to the new catalog, select the thumbnails and choose Copy from the Edit menu. Click the title bar of the new contact sheet window and choose Paste from the Edit menu. You can also select the thumbnails in the contact sheet window and use the drag-and-drop method to transfer the thumbnails to the new catalog.

Copy a Photo to the Clipboard
KODAK BROWSER software allows you to copy an entire photo or a portion of a photo displayed in a photo window to the Clipboard. Photos copied to the Clipboard can be pasted into any application that supports MACINTOSH/WINDOWS copy and paste functions.
To copy the entire photo:
1. Select the photo. You can use the keyboard shortcut, Command-A for Macintosh version.
A marquee appears around the border of the photo.
2. Choose Copy from the Edit menu (Command-C for the Macintosh version or CTRL+C for the
Windows version).
KODAK BROWSER software places a copy of the photo on the Clipboard. Choose Show Clipboard from the Edit menu to see the contents of the Clipboard.
KODAK BROWSER software also allows you to copy a portion of a photo to the Clipboard without cropping the displayed photo.
To copy a portion of the photo to the Clipboard:
1. Create a selection region that you want to copy. Click the arrow cursor in the upper-left
corner of the area that you want to retain in the photo, and drag the cursor down and to the
lower-right corner of the photo.
The crop marquee displays on the photo. To remove the marquee, click the arrow cursor anywhere outside the marquee.
Adjust the side and top edges of the crop marquee, if necessary, to include the portion of the photo you want to keep. You can adjust the edges separately or simultaneously.
When you place the arrow over the edge of the crop marquee, the arrow turns into a double-headed arrow indicating you can stretch the marquee. You can center the double-headed arrow over an edge of the crop marquee and drag one edge inward or outward, or you can center the double-headed arrow over a corner of the crop marquee and drag the corner inward or outward.
To adjust the location of the crop marquee without changing its dimensions, click the arrow inside the marquee and, while holding down the mouse button, drag the marquee to center it over the area of the photo you want to retain.
Now, choose Crop from the Edit menu. The cropped photo replaces the original photo in the photo window.
2. Choose Copy from the Edit menu (Command-C for the Macintosh version or CTRL+C for the
Windows version).
The area within the marquee copies to the Clipboard. Choose Show Clipboard from the Edit menu to see the contents of the clipboard.
The Clipboard holds only one photo at a time, which it stores in the application memory. The size of the photo that you can transfer to the Clipboard depends on the amount of available application memory.
Copying a high-resolution (large) photo to the Clipboard requires a large amount of memory. If you do not have sufficient application memory for the size of the photo being copied, save the photo to a file and then import the photo into your application, rather than copying to the Clipboard. The approximate amount of available disk space required to display one 24-bit color photo in a photo window in each of the five Photo CD resolutions is as follows:
Size (in pixels) Approximate Memory (kilobytes or megabytes)
128 by 192 96.0 KB
256 by 384 384.0 KB
512 by 768 1.5 MB
1024 by 1536 6.0 MB
2048 by 3072 24.0 MB
