- Jim leaned back and sighed, too frustrated to
- continue. All the villagers kept repeating their
- lines endlessly, offering nary a hint. He could
- find no way to proceed in the game without solving
- this puzzle. Cutting the power to his computer, he
- slowly shook his head -- once again he had reached
- an impasse in a game because he couldn't figure out
- what to do.
-
- "If only I had real help," Jim muttered, feeling a
- growing dislike for a game interface that presented
- him with a predefined number of questions he could
- ask, but nothing more.
-
- The next day Jim logged onto GEnie to visit his
- usual RoundTables. As he passed the GEnie
- Announcements an upcoming gaming event caught his
- attention. Jim had never tried GEnie's multi-player
- games, figuring they couldn't offer any more than
- regular computer games but, luckily, his
- frustration with home computer games revived the
- explorer in him.
-
- To be a Lord
-
- Arriving in GemStone III first, Jim created
- Quicken, the Thief. As soon as Quicken stepped into
- the realm of Kulthea, Jim was overwhelmed by the
- size and scope of the land. The interface was
- entirely new to him, but by using the HELP and
- ADVICE commands he was able to get Quicken's feet
- wet in no time. He ended up in a swamp.
-
- Never caring much for mapping, Jim found Quicken
- hopelessly lost, running from creatures that
- obviously wanted him for a snack. Gathering his
- wits, Jim followed his natural instinct and began
- yelling for help. Just as all seemed lost a group
- of adventurers broke through the mist, protecting
- and guiding Quicken back to civilization while
- volunteering tips about exploring.
-
- Once safely back in town, Quicken talked with other
- players, gaining valuable help and insight, and in
- the process making friends from across North
- America. A sorceror suggested downloading the
- optional IBM front-end program, so Quicken
- temporarily retired while Jim heeded her advice.
-
- The next time Jim entered Gemstone III, he was
- greeted by beautiful graphics and sound. Not only
- did the front end enhance GemStone III, it also
- made the game easier to play, and Jim was soon
- immersed in a true roleplaying experience.
-
- Now Jim quests with real people, each of whom has
- his or her own attitude and perspective. And unlike
- most fantasy roleplaying games, when Jim gets stuck
- he can simply ask his friends or veterans for help,
- eliminating those old impasses.
-
- When Jim isn't guiding Quicken through valleys
- battling trolls, he knows he can still enjoy
- Gemstone III by downloading their publication,
- Kulthean Chronicles. Not only is it filled with
- prose, adventure, hints, graphics, and maps, it
- comes ready to print, so he doesn't have to hassle
- with printer settings.
-
- High Times
-
- Gerinomo soared a full hundred feet before dipping
- his wing into the ground and cartwheeling into
- flames. In hindsight, Jim realized that turning
- near the ground without taking into account the
- wingspan length would lead to more untimely demises
- for Gerinomo. Air Warrior possessed the most
- realistic flight dynamics Jim had ever seen --
- real-time flight with buffeting, stalls, spins, G
- effects, and more.
-
- Yet with the Super VGA version of Air Warrior, Jim
- could practice his flying and combat skills against
- drones or friends via modem before taking to flight
- on GEnie. And he could receive tutoring online as
- well.
-
- Jim joined the Air Warrior Training Academy, which
- drastically helps rookies learn to fly the
- unfriendly skies of Air Warrior. Taught by aces who
- want to create more aces, the academy is the best
- way to get a fast grip on the game. Jim found that
- much of the training is individualized, leading to
- a more thorough and rewarding learning experience.
-
- After a few sessions, Jim knew his piloting and
- gunnery skills had increased dramatically. Gerinomo
- had actually shot down his instructor in the Air
- Warrior Arena. While flying one-on-one, the
- instructor would still take Gerinomo out, but
- Gerinomo had managed to sneak up and blast him
- before the instructor could react.
-
- Soon Jim enlisted Gerinomo in a squadron, flying
- with wingmen in coordinated attacks on other
- countries. The battles were never boring, since the
- opponents were real people, each with their own
- patterns as well as inconsistencies to throw Jim
- off.
-
- Jim has adapted Gerinomo's flying tactics over time
- to avoid giving his enemies knowledge of any single
- style of attack. He always tries to pair up with a
- wingman, not only for companionship, but for the
- safety of numbers. One of his goals is to return to
- the Air Warrior Training Academy, not as a student
- but as an instructor.

- Intergalactic Investing
-
- Trump eased back on the controls as his ship landed
- on the moon. Stepping out of the ship he glanced at
- the darkened steel -- a close-call with a pirate
- vessel had almost given him an early retirement.
- Sighing, Jim had Trump sell the cargo which barely
- paid off the damages he had incurred.
-
- Jim had found Federation II, GEnie's premier space
- trading simulation, a fantasy counterpoint for his
- real investing. Here he could be as cut-throat as
- he wanted, and get away with it. Trump had received
- his pilot's license by bribing an official; with
- that in hand he had taken to space in the Grubber,
- a small cargo ship.
-
- In time, Jim thought he would buy Trump a powerful
- ship and perform some personal bounty hunting on
- that pirate. In quite some time, Jim ammended, as
- he watched his finances deplete considerably when
- Trump loaded cargo destined for Mars onto the
- Grubber. At least on Mars he could visit the tavern
- and relax with other people.
-
- Jim's ultimate goal for Trump is to become a
- certified explorer, allowing him to create his own
- planet there in the game. Jim knows it won't be
- easy. In order to become an explorer, Trump will
- need to solve some of the galaxy's foremost
- mysteries -- a great reason to load up on life
- insurance. On the monetary side, he'll have to
- build a small empire of factories, producing goods
- to fortify his capital. Once he's completed these
- phases, Trump will be able to relax on his very own
- fee-simple planet.
-
- Race of the Races
-
- With twenty-one races and seven professions
- available to Jim in Dragon's Gate, he wanted to try
- more than one. And he could, thanks to Dragon's
- Gate allowing up to three characters under a single
- GEnie account.
-
- Thus was born Elandyl Bree, Jim's Fir Elf forester,
- and Garth Legger, the Arachnian fighter, as well as
- Castal deSoar, a Dragon runemage. Each of Jim's
- characters follow different alignments and practice
- their preferred religion.
-
- When Jim feels like soaring on a wing and a flare,
- he plays the benevolent Castal, his dragon. Capable
- of weaving powerful magick spells in addition to
- breathing scorching fire, Castal is Jim's favorite.
- He always had a special liking for dragons.
-
- When Jim wants to cause trouble, Garth the
- arachnian will enter the picture, a chaotic spider
- capable of webbing and poisoning opponents, in
- addition to making vicious attacks.
-
- Last, Jim brings Elandyl the forester into play
- when he wants to explore new areas outside or under
- the Spur. Jim plays each of his three characters
- differently, allowing him to roleplay as much as he
- wants. While Castal may save someone on Tuesday,
- Garth may attack that very same person on
- Wednesday. With the latitude of races available in
- Dragon's Gate, Jim only wishes he could have more
- than three.
-
- The Gathering Place
-
- Jim visits the Multi-Player Games RoundTable on a
- regular basis. Here he can read and write messages
- concerning Gemstone III, Air Warrior, Federation
- II, and Dragon's Gate, in addition to finding out
- about other multi-player games, both old and new.
- The Multi-Player Games RoundTable also serves as a
- forum allowing Jim to offer his suggestions
- directly to the designers of the games, something
- he could never do before.
-
- Jim knows that the single most important attribute
- to all of GEnie's multi-player games is
- interactivity with other players, whether he's
- playing with or against them. He's made friends
- with people he'll undoubtedly never meet, but
- they're real nonetheless.
-
- Interaction is to games as life is to
- communicating. You've spent your life talking with
- others. In retrospect, what would it be without
- communication? With that in mind, consider all the
- computer games you've played over time. No
- interaction. Now consider GEnie's multi-player
- games, which are not only great games, they're
- filled with great interaction.
-
- See you online -- although you may not know who I
- am!
