  1. Ah, summer time, when the reading is easy. This is the time of year to sit
  2. out by the pool or under the tree, or lay in the hammock or on the beach,
  3. and read. Put on the sunglasses, get a cold drink, and read.
  4.   
  5. But read what? You've put off several books until now, and now you can't
  6. exactly remember their names. Some of them you have put off for years -- are
  7. they even still in print? No problem for you, the Information Artist, and
  8. GEnie's ARTIST(R) system.

  10. A Library Reference in Cyberspace
  11.   
  12. GEnie's Bookshelf contains records for more than one million books in print,
  13. plus reviews for more than 40,000 books and information on more than 50,000
  14. publishers. With the Knowbot to do the searching FOR you, finding the books
  15. you want is a cinch.

  17. Just enter the keyword BOOKSHELF or M1250 at any GEnie numbered page prompt.
  18. And during the entire month of June, search surcharges in BookShelf are Half
  19. Price!

  21. BookShelf consists of the Books in Print database made available by Dialog
  22. Information Services, Inc. BookShelf is offered through GEnie via Advanced
  23. Research Technologies' ARTIST(R) Gateway System.

  25. Basically, GEnie's BookShelf helps you quickly find out if a book is in
  26. print and where to obtain it. Simply enter a subject you are interested in,
  27. an author's name, or key words from the title.

  29. Thumbing Through the Listings
  30.   
  31. All you do is ask your question. The system will quickly search through
  32. directories containing information on more than one million books and give
  33. you a listing of the titles found. If you know the title, you can for
  34. reviews on it -- more than 40,000 are available.

  36. BookShelf accesses the "Books In Print" database. Normally you would have to
  37. go to the Library and wade through volumes of material to find out about a
  38. book you're interested in. BookShelf simplifies the process for you!
  39.   
  40. Remember, searches in BookShelf are performed against full records, so your
  41. search terms need to be specific enough to find the information you want
  42. while being broad enough to ensure that you retrieve everything pertinent.

  44. Like the other ARTIST systems on GEnie, BookShelf uses a computerized online
  45. librarian called a Knowbot. It reads every item in the directory for you and
  46. comes back with a response which in effect says, "Here's everything I could
  47. find. Tell me if it's what you're looking for."

  49. GEnie BookShelf also allows you to find Publisher Information, all the
  50. information you need to contact a book's publisher for ordering or more
  51. information.

  53. Remember that BookShelf is a GEnie$Premium service, so select item #2 on
  54. Page 1250 for a complete listing of applicable search rates. For
  55. instructions on searching in GEnie's BookShelf, select item #3; for
  56. disclaimers and warranty limitations relating to the use of BookShelf,

  112. Item 1 will give only bibliographic information. Item 2 will look for full
  113. text book reviews on the book in question. Item 3 will give you full
  114. information on publishers to help you get a book you want.

  128. As you can see, you can look for key words in the title, search for books in
  129. a subject area (this item accepts Boolean searches as well), find all the
  130. books written by a particular author, and limit the search according to
  131. year(s) of publication.

  133. Once you have set up your search, tell BookShelf to search the databases by
  134. typing B (for "Begin your search") and pressing return. BookShelf will
  135. access the remote host system and search through the database for you. It
  136. will automatically display Book Titles in groups of up to 10. Titles are
  137. displayed in reverse order by publication date meaning that the most
  138. recently published books will be at the top of the list.

  140. For instance, if you wanted to read "Gone with the Wind" and other books
  141. about the original book, the movie, and related materials, you could enter
  142. GONE WIND as words in the title. The results would look like this:

  188. If the search results in too many matches, you can select item #4 to change
  189. this search and use a more specific set of search terms or a date or date
  190. range limiter. If there are no matches from your search, you will
  191. automatically be returned to the search entry menu where you can redefine
  192. your search using broader search terms.

  194. The options here allow you to get more titles, ask for the full text on
  195. selected records, get publisher information, or order a book through another
  196. GEnie service.

  200. In the course of just a few minutes, you can find all the information you
  201. need without spending hours in the library trying to track down that elusive
  202. information. You can spend the extra time reading that book, or just
  203. enjoying a few more minutes by the pool.
