- GEnie has a whole new face for Macintosh owners --
- a Graphical User Interface (GUI) designed to make
- everything you do online quick, easy, and
- convenient. Plus it's available free of charge!
-
- Complete online navigation is built into the first
- release, and once all of its powerful off-line
- utilities are implemented in future stages, Mac
- owners will enjoy an environment on GEnie second to
- none. Check out this overview...
-
- Test Drive
-
- Once you've entered your personal account
- information and modem settings, signing on with
- GEnie's Macintosh GUI is as simple as clicking on
- the Logon Button. Then, as you visit your favorite
- spots online, you decide whether to attend to
- things like reading and replying to GE Mail or
- Bulletin Board messages, or take care of them
- later, off-line, when the billing clock isn't
- ticking. You can even do such things as mark
- Library files for downloading and move on to other
- RoundTables. When you're finished visiting places
- and interacting live online, the Mac GUI will send
- your GE Mail replies and download the files you
- marked automatically, all at once, before it logs
- you off.
-
- And that's not all this new Macintosh GUI does!
- Offering loads of convenient functionality, it
- includes features like a built-in Menu Navigator,
- Text Editor, Address Book, and a To Do Manager for
- efficient management of your online activities,
- resulting in speedy online sessions.
-
- Navigating Cyberspace
-
- Worry no more about remembering page numbers or
- correctly spelling keywords in order to visit your
- favorite places on GEnie. Navigating from one page
- to another is as simple as selecting the Macintosh
- GUI's path from a pulldown menu or the Menu
- Navigator list. The Menu Navigator keeps track of
- everywhere you go and allows you to easily jump
- back and forth between various GEnie services.
-
- Your favorite GEnie RoundTables can be permanently
- placed in the Online menu giving you convenient,
- speedy access to them whenever you're online.
-
- When you enter a Bulletin Board, Categories with
- new messages are displayed by default, in a list
- resembling System 7's Finder in its hierarchical
- outline view. If you want ALL Categories displayed
- simply select the LIST ALL option from the Board
- pulldown menu.
-
- When you click on the triangle for a Category's
- Folder, a list of that Category's Topics are
- presented. The number of new messages in each Topic
- are listed next to it, and double-clicking on a
- Topic opens its messages in a separate window. From
- there you can read and reply to them with ease by
- using the Macintosh GUI's built-in Text Editor. You
- can also elect to have the To Do Manager save new
- messages in its Filing Cabinet so you can read and
- reply to them later, off-line.
-
- Software Libraries are accessed in the same easy
- manner. Once you have a list of files from any
- Library on GEnie, you may select one or more files
- for immediate downloading or get what you want
- later, at a more convenient time.
-
- Hey, Mr. Postman!
-
- Most folks check for incoming GE Mail as soon as
- they sign on, and the GEnie Macintosh GUI makes
- doing that a breeze. It offers three ways to get a
- list of waiting letters: by Icon, Menu, or Command
- Key.
-
- Once you have a list of GE Mail letters, use
- point-and-click to choose between reading a
- specific letter, several letters, or all of them,
- one after the next. You can reply to your letters
- using the built-in Text Editor, forwarding them to
- other GEnie members, and downloading any attached
- files.
-
- To write a GE Mail letter, you simply type COMMAND
- M or select Create Mail from a pulldown menu. The
- Macintosh GUI's built-in Text Editor automatically
- provides fields for the To: and cc: (carbon copy)
- addresses, the subject matter, and, of course, the
- body of your letter. You can enter a GE Mail
- address manually or select it from the built-in
- Address Book (provided you entered it there
- previously). It's much easier to choose your friend
- Jane Smith's GEnie address from the Address Book
- than try to recall whether it's J.SMITH198 or
- JSMITH.198, since you don't have to remember
- spelling or whether the period in her name comes
- before or after the numbers.
-
- After writing a letter online, you can choose to
- send it immediately or later; the Mac GUI will
- remember your decision and act accordingly. If you
- elect to send it later, the GUI will remind you of
- any unfinished activities before you log off.
-
- Organizing Your Activities
-
- Most GEnie activities (such as reading and posting
- GE Mail or Bulletin Board messages, and
- transferring files) can be predefined with the
- GEnie Macintosh GUI using its built-in To Do
- Manager.
-
- The To Do Manager can be prompted to remind you (at
- log on or off time) of any pending activities when,
- with a simple click, you can select any or all of
- them to be processed. Go grab yourself a fresh cup
- of coffee while the Macintosh GUI retrieves
- incoming or sends outgoing GE Mail, or transfers
- files to Software Libraries.
-
- Except for file transfers, everything collected by
- the To Do Manager is placed in the Macintosh GUI's
- Filing Cabinet -- which can be accessed off-line.
- While off-line, you'll have plenty of time to
- browse through Bulletin Board messages, GE Mail,
- and the Library items you've gathered; compose your
- replies, and have the Macintosh GUI deliver them
- during your next online session. Talk about quick
- and easy!
-
- The bulk of this functionality is built into the
- first release, with a utility enabling you to reply
- to Bulletin Board messages off-line to be added to
- an upcoming version. That means all this and more
- can be yours shortly!
-
- Grabbing the GUI
-
- GEnie's Macintosh GUI is available free! Non
- prime-time connect charges are waived up to 2400
- baud while you download it, or you can have it
- delivered to you on disk by the postal service by
- calling GEnie Client Services at 1-800-638-9636.
-
- To download it, move to GEnie Front Ends on Page
- 1465 by typing the keyword FRONTEND or M1465 at any
- GEnie page prompt. Remember: Evening and weekend
- connect charges are waived on that page at speeds
- up to 2400 baud, but surcharges such as 9600 baud
- access still apply.
-
- Once you're the proud owner of a brand new GEnie
- Macintosh GUI, should you have any questions about
- it, a quick stop at the new GEnie for Mac
- RoundTable at Page 1460 will get you personal
- assistance.
-
- And be sure to tell your IBM-compatible friends
- that the ease and convenience of GEnie's Graphical
- User Interface for Windows will be available for
- them very soon!
