  1. Resolutions and Fresh Starts!

  4. It's that time of year when many of us pause to evaluate the quality of our
  5. lives.
  6.   
  7. I'm no exception. While the arrival of the new year brings thoughts of bubbly
  8. champagne and fresh starts, even as I don one of those silly hats, I find
  9. myself wondering if I'm accomplishing what I really want to do. Am I meeting
  10. goals I set last year -- or even in years gone by -- or am I getting older
  11. instead of better? I'll spare you my conclusions while sharing my goals for
  12. the coming year.

  24. If you're familiar with GEnie (and even if you're not) you'll probably see
  25. right away that a number of these resolutions can be addressed through the
  26. wonders of telecommunications. Just in case you don't, I'll take them one by
  27. one.

  29. Broadening Horizons

  31. One of the easiest ways to learn more about the world is by visiting GEnie's
  32. Regional RoundTables -- two of which debuted just last month! Between them,
  33. they cover a lot of territory.
  34.   
  35. "Wherever you live, work, travel or play, you'll feel at home in the USA East
  36. and MidWest RoundTables," noted Gary Bungart, chief sysop of these fresh, new
  37. spots. "From Maine to Alabama, Ohio to Iowa, you can participate in topics to
  38. fit your every need. Categories such as Leisure Time Activities, Jobs and
  39. Careers, Travel Tips and Relocation Information offer you up-to-the-minute
  40. news and views. Pull up a keyboard, and make yourself comfortable."

  42. The USA East and USA Midwest RoundTables join with the American West
  43. (formerly Left Coast) RoundTable to provide virtual meeting places for folks
  44. from Florida to Alaska.
  45.   
  46. Diane Chaney, chief sysop of the American West RoundTable, spoke of an
  47. upcoming Real-Time Conference. "We're very excited that Adam Fine, Nevada
  48. Editor for Casino Player magazine, will be our special conference guest on
  49. the 12th of January," she said. Check for the starting time on American West
  50. RoundTable Page 1065. Diane also mentioned that the new Moving To... topics
  51. on their Bulletin Board are proving to be very popular.

  53. Relocating and gambling aren't the only hot topics on the American West
  54. RoundTable, of course. If you're planning a trip for business or pleasure
  55. during 1994, GEnie's Regional RoundTables are quick stops you won't want to
  56. miss -- which one, depends on your destination.
  57.   
  58. Bulletin Board members in all three Regional RoundTables routinely discuss
  59. the merits of such diverse topics as local politics, sports, lotteries, and
  60. even GEnie get togethers. They talk about resorts and theme parks, the ins
  61. and outs of travel, and where to find good bed and breakfast sites -- not to
  62. mention hotels, motels, and campgrounds. They know about concerts and
  63. theatrical productions, historical sites, local industry, and sometimes even
  64. job opportunities.

  66. "Where else can you get advice directly from people who have intimate
  67. knowlege of the place you're thinking of visiting?" Gary Bungart asked
  68. rhetorically when we spoke. Wouldn't it be great to talk with folks who've
  69. eaten at the restaurants, are familiar with local traditions, and see sites
  70. every day that you've only read about -- and find out if they're really worth
  71. doing BEFORE you spend your time and money getting there? You'll be amazed at
  72. what you can learn on these Bulletin Boards about interesting pl aces in your
  73. own home state -- I know I was! They talk about places I've been meaning to
  74. visit for years; maybe THIS year I will.

  76. Another way of getting quick information about an area is through newspapers.
  77. GEnie's NewsStand carries the full text of dozens of U.S. and overseas papers
  78. including Buffalo News, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and USA Today.
  79. These papers help keep you informed of events around the world, in your own
  80. locality, and in those places you'd like to know more about.

  82. NewsStand is a GEnie$Professional service, so it's important to read the rate
  83. information on Page 1240 before accessing it. There is an extra cost for
  84. NewsStand, but it provides you with 24-hour access to information that even
  85. most public libraries don't have.

  87. Reaching Out

  89. One of the best things about getting acquainted with people online is that it
  90. busts boundaries right and left. You can concentrate on what people have to
  91. say rather than how they say it or what they look like. Not only do you not
  92. know a person's age and background, you often don't know if you're exchanging
  93. opinions with someone on the other side of town -- or the other side of the
  94. world!

  96. Members of the Japan RoundTable, for example, discuss everything from
  97. technology to poetry and Japanese sex roles. Sysop Wendell Hong said, "Our
  98. Japanimation section in the Bulletin Board was recently expanded by three new
  99. Categories. If you're interested in Animes, drop by and check them out."
  100. Fascinating Animes can be downloaded from the Japan Software Library as well.

  102. Germany & Europe RoundTable members not only discuss international news, they
  103. exchange international travel tips along with the relative merits of more
  104. earthly delights like beer -- or "bier," as the Germans say it.
  105.   
  106. Join them Sunday afternoon, January 30th at 2PM Eastern time, for a Real-Time
  107. International Bier Competition Conference. "We'll debate the best of the best
  108. -- what is the 'best' German beer," explained Tony Kendall, chief sysop of
  109. the Germany & Europe RoundTable. "Our German staff members -- Mike, Stefan,
  110. and Alexander -- will argue why their particular favorite is best, (all in
  111. good fun, of course) and explain different types of German bier, how they're
  112. made, how bier effects German culture and traditions, and talk about its
  113. influence on German history." I suspect folks from GEnie's new Zymurgy
  114. RoundTable will stop by as well.
  115.   
  116. And one lucky Bier Conference participant will win an authentic German
  117. Bierstein, compliments of Great*German*Gifts on GEnie Mall. Maybe that will
  118. be you!

  120. Delightful prizes are awarded often on GEnie, as Canada RoundTable member Ken
  121. Maher can attest. Ken recently won a CD-ROM drive for his entry in the
  122. RoundTable's "Images of Canada" contest with a gorgeous photograph of
  123. Chapleau Lake, which you can see in File #367 CHAPLEAU.GIF in the Canada
  124. RoundTable Library.

  126. Broadening one's horizons and communicating with people from other societies
  127. can be accomplished by means other than words, of course. In Software Library
  128. 9, Canadian Art Gallery, you'll find outstanding GIF collections of
  129. photographs by Iva Zimova and paintings by Brian McNeil -- Canadian artists
  130. who share their view of the world pictorially. If you don't have a GIF
  131. viewer, check with the appropriate Computing RoundTable on GEnie.

  133. The Canada RoundTable holds Real-Time Conferences from 10 PM to Midnight
  134. Eastern time each Thursday. "We invite you to visit Virtual Canada," said
  135. Stephen Holtzman, Canada RoundTable sysop. "We guarantee you a warm welcome
  136. even during blizzards."

  138. Real-Time Friendships

  140. Online communities -- which is really what I'm talking about -- aren't
  141. limited by geographical boundaries, either. If you prefer your friendships
  142. live, GEnie Chat Lines is the place to be.
  143.   
  144. "Chat Lines will ring in 1994 with a New Year's Eve Party full of fun and
  145. prizes -- and that's not all!" said chief sysop Penni when we asked about
  146. upcoming plans. "We throw a party EVERY night with over a dozen different
  147. events taking place. Our Welcome Lounge is open nightly from 8PM to 2AM
  148. Eastern time to make old and new friends alike feel right at home."

  150. Chat casually with people there when you are, or talk with official hosts
  151. from services such as Astrology, Home Improvement, Romance Exchange, Apple
  152. II, Windows, UNIX, and Internet RoundTables. Join others as they gather for
  153. fun in the Loony Bin or Around the Shaman's Fire, and relax at the Poolside
  154. Bar and Grill. You can even catch up on current events with Newsline, or try
  155. your hand at Chat Lines' ever-popular games including Trivia, Fictionary,
  156. Squigglez, 5 Alive!, Word Rap, Paraphrase, HangDood, and Clo ogle.

  158. You may even be able to see what your new friends look like since the
  159. Software Library has hundreds of GIF files in Chat Lines Photo Album, Library
  160. 6. If you're looking for friendly communications software for your
  161. IBM-compatible, get popular TurboTerm v2.0 in File #415 TT20.EXE while you're
  162. there.

  164. Other great places to make friends online are GEnie's multi-player games, in
  165. particular, GemStone III.
  166.   
  167. Offering the most socially-oriented multi-player game environment on GEnie,
  168. for me, GemStone III provides a fantasy, role playing structure for making
  169. friends. Mastering the game itself is far from easy, but it sure is fun
  170. trying, as you dash around extensive virtual lands slaying monsters and
  171. sharing bounteous treasure with other brave adventurers.

  173. GemStone III appeals in different ways to different people, but I was so
  174. taken with it shortly after it opened that I started a monthly online
  175. newsletter that's now in its fourth year of publication! Written by the
  176. players themselves in exchange for free weekends in the game, Kelfour Edition
  177. contains game news, playing techniques, tips, and delightful fiction. It's
  178. available from the GemStone III Library on Page 930. Early back issues are
  179. stored in the Multi-Player Games RoundTable Library on Page 1045.

  181. You can play GemStone III with any text-based communications software. If you
  182. use an IBM-compatible, I recommend the graphics Front End program with
  183. optional sound and music in file #199 GS3FEB17.EXE from the GemStone III

  185. FE-PIP&ICO.ZIP and #219 MUSIC1.EXE, respectively.

  187. Quality Family Time

  189. You're probably wondering how anyone can get quality family time on GEnie.
  190. Well, I've done it, and I resolve to do it more in 1994.
  191.   
  192. Computer literacy grows more important every day, and if there are youngsters
  193. in your house, you can't lose by playing RSCARDS with them! Offering
  194. Blackjack, Backgammon, Checkers, Poker, Reversi, and Chess, there are games
  195. for every age level, and RSCARDS graphic front ends are available for
  196. IBM-compatibles, Apple Macintosh and IIgs, Commodore Amiga and C-128, and
  197. Atari ST computers. That's right, share a game with your kids -- it's great
  198. fun if you relax and let them make mistakes. The important aspects are
  199. sharing, and the opportunity you'll create for open communication.

  205. I could go on but the New Year is growing closer by the minute. You can find

  209. There are many benefits to being a member of a virtual community, not the
  210. least of which is that there's no yard or housework involved -- unless you
  211. want to share tips and learn tricks (which is always more fun than working)
  212. at the Home Improvement RoundTable.

  214. Winning Resolutions
  215.   
  216. Whether or not you're making YOUR Resolutions, remember that you never can
  217. tell what may come from broadening your horizons and making friends online.
  218. Some little thing you run across could be just the spark you need to get
  219. started.
  220.   
  221. A case in point is Motorcycling RoundTable member, Vernon Hatley, who
  222. remarked about just such an event recently on that Bulletin Board. "Thanks
  223. for all the help and info along the way," he wrote. "It's kinda funny -- this
  224. topic here on GEnie is what got me back into trials again. I happened to find
  225. it one day by accident and started reading. Until then, I thought observed
  226. trials in the U.S. was dead."
  227.   
  228. All it took was a reminder from Vernon's new-found GEnie friends to renew his
  229. interest in one of the most difficult forms of motorcycling competition
  230. around. Because of that, last month he became the 1993 United States Central
  231. Regionals Champion, Novice Class, in Observed Trials riding! What a great way
  232. to start a new year!

  234. Fresh Starts

  236. Virtual communities on GEnie address just about everything you can think of,
  237. and are populated by many people just like you. To locate topics you're
  238. interested in, visit GEnie's Index of Products and Services by typing INDEX
  239. at any GEnie prompt, and regularly check the GEnie Announcements on Page 3,
  240. Menu Option 2. Hourly connect charges are waived for both services.
