The Surface Test only scans the disk for errors -- it does not repair them. You must use Diagnose Disk to make repairs.
Surface Test is most appropriate when you think the disk is OK and you want to quickly verify that assumption. If you believe there are surface errors, use Diagnose Disk instead.
