  3. PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT CAREFULLY; it contains
  4. important installation information about Norton 
  5. Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall.  
  6.  
  7. Note that the release notes may refer to features 
  8. that are not in the product you have installed, as it 
  9. covers three products with different features.

  32. After installation, Norton Internet Security will block
  33. all file and print sharing on your computer.  Please 
  34. refer to the document on the Start Menu / Programs / 
  35. Norton Internet Security (or Norton Personal Firewall) /
  36. Product Support / Operation with Networks for details
  37. on how to configure the product for secure operation
  38. with your network.

  41. Installation with the Microsoft Installer
  42. --------------------------------------------------------
  43. The Microsoft Installer is a new component for Windows,
  44. and is required to install Norton Internet Security or
  45. Norton Personal Firewall.  If your operating system 
  46. does not already have this installed, it will automatically
  47. be added.  The MSI installer requires about 25 megabytes
  48. of space temporarily to install, but will clean up after
  49. the install is complete.  On Windows 98 Second Edition, 
  50. and possibly other conditions, the MSI installer may 
  51. need to reboot the system before Install continues.

  54. Installation on multi-boot systems
  55. --------------------------------------------------------
  56. Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall can be 
  57. used on systems that boot multiple operating systems on
  58. the same primary partition, such as having Windows 95
  59. and Windows NT both on the system.  However, if you use
  60. a dual boot system, you must install the product into
  61. different directories on each operating system - do not
  62. attempt to use the same directory, or you may have 
  63. conflicts.

  66. Installation on machines running server services
  67. --------------------------------------------------------
  68. Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall are not
  69. supported on server versions of Windows NT or Windows 
  70. 2000, but it can be installed and operated.  
  71.  
  72. Please review the technical notes on configuring the 
  73. product to support various server processes which need
  74. access to the internet during the system boot up when
  75. firewall alerts cannot show.  Please note that this can
  76. affect a Windows NT Workstation or Windows 2000 
  77. Professional installation running IIS or other server-
  78. oriented services.

  87. Passwords are case sensitive
  88. --------------------------------------------------------
  89. With Norton Internet Security: Family Edition, passwords 
  90. for user accounts are case sensitive. The passwords 
  91. abc$123, Abc$123, and ABC$123 are each considered a 
  92. different password. Make sure your passwords are 
  93. consistent.

  96. Updating web site blocking list on older computers
  97. --------------------------------------------------------
  98. With Norton Internet Security: Family Edition on older 
  99. machines (usually with less than 48mb of RAM), the 
  100. LiveUpdate process for updating the web site blocking
  101. list can take a very long time to update (sometimes 
  102. multiple hours).  If you have a limited amount of RAM,
  103. shut down as many running applications as you can before
  104. doing a LiveUpdate, and if you do find that it takes a
  105. very long time, do LiveUpdates when you will not be
  106. using your computer.

  109. Web Browser Compatibility
  110. --------------------------------------------------------
  111. Some features of Norton Internet Security, such as
  112. the web-based subscription update, are designed for 
  113. modern web browsers.  If you do not have a version 4.0+ 
  114. browser from Microsoft or Netscape, you may not be able 
  115. to use these features.

  118. Uninstalling Norton Internet Security
  119. --------------------------------------------------------
  120. Norton Internet Security hooks into the network setup of
  121. a computer, and has some complex actions that must be
  122. taken when uninstalling.  It is not recommended that 
  123. uninstall products (such as Norton CleanSweep) be used
  124. to remove Norton Internet Security, and it should only
  125. be removed with its own uninstaller.  This can be 
  126. accessed from the Start Menu or from the Control Panel.
  127. Please note that a supervisor account must be loaded 
  128. in Norton Internet Security before an uninstall can be
  129. done.

  132. LiveAdvisor interaction with older Norton products
  133. --------------------------------------------------------
  134. If you will have both this new Norton product installed 
  135. and any 2000 version Norton product installed on your 
  136. computer, the LiveAdvisor button on the menu bar of your 
  137. 2000 version Norton product will be removed. As 
  138. LiveAdvisor is no longer being used for information 
  139. delivery, this is no loss in functionality to you. As was 
  140. outlined in the final LiveAdvisor messages, Symantec has 
  141. replaced the LiveAdvisor delivery mechanism with 
  142. information on the Symantec web site (www.symantec.com) 
  143. and product-specific newsletters (see the web page at 
  144. http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/bulletin/index.html).

  147. Upgrading Operating Systems after installing NIS
  148. --------------------------------------------------------
  149. If you install Norton Internet Security or Norton
  150. Personal Firewall on a Windows 95 or Windows 98 system
  151. and then upgrade to Windows 2000 or another NT based
  152. operating system, the product may not function properly.
  153. To fix this, simply uninstall Norton Internet Security
  154. or Norton Personal Firewall and re-install it.  This
  155. will fix issues such as disapearing accounts and 
  156. errors on startup caused by the OS upgrade.
