Installation Notes Read Me - September 1, 2000 PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT CAREFULLY; it contains important installation information about Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall. Note that the release notes may refer to features that are not in the product you have installed, as it covers three products with different features. Additional notes may be found in the Start Menu / Programs / Norton Internet Security (or Norton Personal Firewall) / Product Support / Release Notes. Topics include: - Operation with local area networks - Installation with the Microsoft Installer - Installation on multi-boot systems - Installation on machines running server services - Passwords are case sensitive - Updating web site blocking list on older computers - Web Browser compatibility - Uninstalling Norton Internet Security - LiveAdvisor interaction with older Norton products - Upgrading Operating Systems after installing NIS -------------------------------------------------------- Operation with Local Area Networks -------------------------------------------------------- After installation, Norton Internet Security will block all file and print sharing on your computer. Please refer to the document on the Start Menu / Programs / Norton Internet Security (or Norton Personal Firewall) / Product Support / Operation with Networks for details on how to configure the product for secure operation with your network. -------------------------------------------------------- Installation with the Microsoft Installer -------------------------------------------------------- The Microsoft Installer is a new component for Windows, and is required to install Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall. If your operating system does not already have this installed, it will automatically be added. The MSI installer requires about 25 megabytes of space temporarily to install, but will clean up after the install is complete. On Windows 98 Second Edition, and possibly other conditions, the MSI installer may need to reboot the system before Install continues. -------------------------------------------------------- Installation on multi-boot systems -------------------------------------------------------- Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall can be used on systems that boot multiple operating systems on the same primary partition, such as having Windows 95 and Windows NT both on the system. However, if you use a dual boot system, you must install the product into different directories on each operating system - do not attempt to use the same directory, or you may have conflicts. -------------------------------------------------------- Installation on machines running server services -------------------------------------------------------- Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall are not supported on server versions of Windows NT or Windows 2000, but it can be installed and operated. Please review the technical notes on configuring the product to support various server processes which need access to the internet during the system boot up when firewall alerts cannot show. Please note that this can affect a Windows NT Workstation or Windows 2000 Professional installation running IIS or other server- oriented services. The technical notes can be found in the Symantec knowledge base at the following URL: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2000053008391436 -------------------------------------------------------- Passwords are case sensitive -------------------------------------------------------- With Norton Internet Security: Family Edition, passwords for user accounts are case sensitive. The passwords abc$123, Abc$123, and ABC$123 are each considered a different password. Make sure your passwords are consistent. -------------------------------------------------------- Updating web site blocking list on older computers -------------------------------------------------------- With Norton Internet Security: Family Edition on older machines (usually with less than 48mb of RAM), the LiveUpdate process for updating the web site blocking list can take a very long time to update (sometimes multiple hours). If you have a limited amount of RAM, shut down as many running applications as you can before doing a LiveUpdate, and if you do find that it takes a very long time, do LiveUpdates when you will not be using your computer. -------------------------------------------------------- Web Browser Compatibility -------------------------------------------------------- Some features of Norton Internet Security, such as the web-based subscription update, are designed for modern web browsers. If you do not have a version 4.0+ browser from Microsoft or Netscape, you may not be able to use these features. -------------------------------------------------------- Uninstalling Norton Internet Security -------------------------------------------------------- Norton Internet Security hooks into the network setup of a computer, and has some complex actions that must be taken when uninstalling. It is not recommended that uninstall products (such as Norton CleanSweep) be used to remove Norton Internet Security, and it should only be removed with its own uninstaller. This can be accessed from the Start Menu or from the Control Panel. Please note that a supervisor account must be loaded in Norton Internet Security before an uninstall can be done. -------------------------------------------------------- LiveAdvisor interaction with older Norton products -------------------------------------------------------- If you will have both this new Norton product installed and any 2000 version Norton product installed on your computer, the LiveAdvisor button on the menu bar of your 2000 version Norton product will be removed. As LiveAdvisor is no longer being used for information delivery, this is no loss in functionality to you. As was outlined in the final LiveAdvisor messages, Symantec has replaced the LiveAdvisor delivery mechanism with information on the Symantec web site (www.symantec.com) and product-specific newsletters (see the web page at http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/bulletin/index.html). -------------------------------------------------------- Upgrading Operating Systems after installing NIS -------------------------------------------------------- If you install Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall on a Windows 95 or Windows 98 system and then upgrade to Windows 2000 or another NT based operating system, the product may not function properly. To fix this, simply uninstall Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall and re-install it. This will fix issues such as disapearing accounts and errors on startup caused by the OS upgrade.
