  7. and diagnostic utilities provided on the EtherDisk diskette.

  18. Overview
  19. --------
  20. The configuration portion of the program lets you change the
  21. configuration parameters for the adapter to accommodate a
  22. specific operating environment.
  23.  
  24. The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and Diagnostic
  25. Program ensures that the adapter is installed correctly and
  26. functioning properly.  The basic tests check the physical
  27. components, connectors, and circuitry of the adapter and
  28. require only that the adapter be installed in the computer.
  29. The Echo tests check the adapter's ability to transmit data
  30. on the network and require that the adapter be connected to
  31. a network.

  33. The computer containing the adapter to be configured or tested must be
  34. running DOS only.

  36. Running DOS INSTALL Under Windows 95
  37. ------------------------------------------

  39. The INSTALL runs in enabler mode only. It cannot access Windows 95 Card and Socket Services.
  40. The point enabler should operate normally provided your laptop has
  41. an Intel (or Intel-compatible) PC Card controller. If you try to run
  42. INSTALL with an incompatible controller, the program will report
  43. that it could not detect the LAN+Modem card.

  46. Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic utility
  47. -------------------------------------------------
  48. There are two ways to start the program:
  49.  
  50. 1.  From the INSTALL.EXE program, by selecting Configuration and 
  51.     Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
  52.  
  53. 2.  Manually, from the root directory of the EtherDisk diskette, by typing
  54.     the following command:
  55.  
  56.     INSTALL [command keyword] [parameter list]
  57.  
  58.     INSTALL represents the 3Com Configuration and Diagnostic Program name.
  59.     The brackets indicate that the command keyword and parameter list are
  60.     optional.
  61.  
  62.     INSTALL without any arguments invokes the program in full windows
  63.     mode.

  66.     Command Line Keywords
  67.     ---------------------
  68.     The command keywords and parameters are not case-sensitive, so
  69.     CONFIGURE, configure, and Configure, for example, will all work.

  79. The adapter can be configured in either full screen windows mode or 
  80. command line mode.

  83.     Full Screen Windows Mode
  84.     ------------------------
  85.     To configure the adapter using full-screen windowing, type:
  86.     
  87.     INSTALL [Enter]. 
  88.     Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
  89.     Then select the Configure Adapter option in the Configuration and
  90.     Diagnostic menu.

  98.         Command syntax:  INSTALL CONFIGURE  [ /AUTO /IOBASE:N /INT:N
  99.                       /TR:N /MODEM:N /OPTIMIZE:N /POWER:N /LINKBEAT:N ]
  100.         Each parameter must be of the structure "/keyword:value" and
  101.         contain no blank spaces.  For example: /iobase:300 /int:3
  102.  
  103.         Command line configuration parameters are used to configure the 
  104.         adapter using only the option settings you specify.  In most cases,
  105.         any combination of parameters can be used.  Therefore, it is 
  106.         possible to modify only a few settings if needed.

  108.         /AUTO
  109.             The /AUTO parameter configures the adapter automatically based
  110.             on the software's best estimate using interpreted system 
  111.             information.

  139.             Link beat disable/enable (pre-10BASE-T standard only)
  140.             Possible values - ENABLE, DISABLE

  142.             NOTE:  Try this setting ONLY if pre-10BASE-T standard hubs
  143.                    are in use.

  146. Diagnostic tests

  149.     Full Screen Windows Mode

  151.     The diagnostic tests are only available in full-screen mode.
  152.     To run the diagnostic tests, type:

  154.     INSTALL [Enter]. 
  155.     Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
  156.     Then select Diagnostic Tests option in the Configuration and
  157.     Diagnostic menu.

  163. If the adapter fails any of the diagnostic tests, see the TROUBLE.TXT file
  164. in the \HELP directory on the EtherDisk diskette for troubleshooting
  165. procedures.

  167. The SUPPORT.TXT file in the \HELP subdirectory on the EtherDisk diskette
  168. provides information about obtaining product support for the adapter.
