  8.    1. Bugs corrected in this version:
  9.  
  10.       a) when adding new files to already existing RAR solid archive,
  11.          RAR 3.40 compression ratio was lower than in RAR 3.30;
  12.  
  13.       b) WinRAR "Repair" command could crash when repairing
  14.          a corrupt ZIP archive.
  15.  
  16.    2. If archived Unicode name is invalid, RAR 'l' and 'v' commands
  17.       display ASCII file name instead of corrupt Unicode.

  20.    Version 3.40
  21.  
  22.    1. "Fastest" (-m1) RAR compression method has been modified
  23.       to provide much higher compression speed and lower ratio.
  24.       It may be useful for tasks requiring the high speed like
  25.       regular backups.
  26.  
  27.       You may increase "Fastest" speed even more selecting 64KB
  28.       compression dictionary instead of default 4MB.
  29.  
  30.    2. WinRAR is able to decompress archives created by Unix 'compress'
  31.       tool (.Z files). Like GZIP and BZIP2 archives, WinRAR opens
  32.       tar.Z and .taz files in one step, so users do not need to
  33.       unpack .tar manually.
  34.  
  35.    3. WinRAR is able to decompress archives created by 7-Zip
  36.       (.7z files). "Find" command is not supported for this
  37.       archive type.
  38.  
  39.    4. New "Security" dialog in WinRAR settings:
  40.  
  41.       a) "File types to exclude from extracting" option to prevent
  42.          extracting of potentially dangerous files like .exe, .scr
  43.          and .pif;
  44.  
  45.       b) "Propose to select virus scanner" option modifies behavior
  46.          of "Scan archive for viruses" command. You may turn it off
  47.          if you wish to skip the virus scanner selection dialog.

  49.    5. New command line switch -ep3 allows to save and restore
  50.       full file paths including the drive letter.
  51.  
  52.       WinRAR shell equivalent of -ep3 switch are options
  53.       "Store full paths including drive letter" in "Files/File paths"
  54.       page of archiving dialog and "Extract absolute paths"
  55.       in "Advanced/File paths" page of extracting dialog.

  57.    6. You may select and compress disks directly in "My Computer"
  58.       view in WinRAR shell. Just choose "My Computer" in WinRAR
  59.       address bar, select disks to compress and press "Add".
  60.       If you selected more than one item, WinRAR will automatically
  61.       set "Store full paths including drive letter" archiving mode.
  62.  
  63.    7. If you selected several disks in Windows Explorer "My Computer"
  64.       view and started archiving from context menu, WinRAR will
  65.       automatically set "Store full paths including drive letter" mode
  66.       when compressing them.

  68.    8. New command line switch -oc to restore NTFS "Compressed" attribute
  69.       when extracting files. RAR always saves "Compressed" attribute
  70.       when creating an archive, but does not restore it unless -oc switch
  71.       has been specified.

  73.       WinRAR shell equivalent of -oc switch is "Set attribute Compressed"
  74.       option in "Advanced" part of extracting dialog.

  76.    9. Starting from this version RAR volumes contain the volume number
  77.       field.
  78.  
  79.       If archive was created by WinRAR 3.40 or newer, you may view
  80.       the volume number in the top line of "Info" dialog and
  81.       in the address bar.

  83.       In the command line mode the volume number is displayed
  84.       by 'L' and 'V' commands in the line with the total volume
  85.       information.
  86.  
  87.       This feature may be useful if original volume names are lost
  88.       and you need to rename volumes to correct names.

  90.   10. Commands 'L' and 'V' display NTFS "Compressed" attribute
  91.       in archive listing.
  92.  
  93.   11. Switch -ag may include an optional text enclosed in '{' and '}'
  94.       characters. This text is inserted into archive name.
  95.       For example: -agHH{hours}MM{minutes}
  96.  
  97.       Same feature is supported in "Generate archive name by mask"
  98.       field of WinRAR archiving dialog.
  99.  
  100.   12. If switch -ac is specified, RAR will not reset "Archive"
  101.       attribute of those files, which size or modification time
  102.       was changed after starting the archiving operation.

  104.       So files modified after placing them to archive and before
  105.       clearing "Archive" attribute, will be included to next incremental
  106.       backup. The same is true for WinRAR "Clear attribute "Archive"
  107.       after compressing" GUI option.
  108.  
  109.   13. If you use "Add to favorites" command inside of archive
  110.       subfolder, WinRAR will save the subfolder and restore it
  111.       when accessing to this favorite item. Previous versions
  112.       were able to restore only the root archive folder.
  113.  
  114.   14. When editing archived files, WinRAR proposes to update them
  115.       immediately after detecting that file was changed. Previous
  116.       versions waited until an external editor terminates before
  117.       updating a changed file.
  118.  
  119.   15. If you drop an archive to WinRAR address bar or toolbar,
  120.       WinRAR will display its contents even if other archive
  121.       is opened now. Previous versions proposed to add a dropped
  122.       archive to browsing one.

  124.       You may still drop an archive to WinRAR file list if you
  125.       need to add it to browsing archive.

  127.   16. Corrected processing of corrupt LZH archives to exclude
  128.       a possible crash when reading corrupt LZH file headers.

  131.       repairing an archive containing the recovery record.

  136.    1. New "Scan archive for viruses" command unpacks an archive to
  137.       temporary folder and checks its contents with antivirus software
  138.       installed on a user's computer.
  139.  
  140.    2. New "Generate report" command creates a report containing
  141.       the list of usual or archived files. You may optionally include
  142.       a file size, date and CRC to report, choose the sort order,
  143.       save report to file, send it to printer or copy to clipboard.
  144.  
  145.    3. New "Benchmark and hardware test" command allows to compare
  146.       performance of RAR compression algorithm on different computers
  147.       and detect possible errors caused by hardware failures.
  148.  
  149.    4. New "Print file" command is able to print both archived
  150.       and usual files.

  152.    5. New "Tools" menu contains "Wizard", "Show information",
  153.       "Convert archives", "Find files", "Repair", "Convert to SFX"
  154.       commands previously available in "Commands" menu and new
  155.       "Scan archive for viruses", "Generate report", "Benchmark
  156.       and hardware test" commands.

  158.    6. WinRAR supports decompression of ZIP archives created using
  159.       "Enhanced deflate" method.

  161.    7. WinRAR pre-allocates disk space for files unpacked
  162.       from ZIP archives. It helps to reduce disk fragmentation,
  163.       especially on NTFS disks. Previous versions did it only
  164.       for RAR archives.
  165.  
  166.    8. Now it is possible to decompress TAR, GZIP and ISO9660
  167.       archives of any size. Previous versions could not handle
  168.       files of these formats, if they exceeded 2 GB.

  170.    9. Status bar displays the current operation progress,
  171.       when reading contents of large tar.gz and tar.bz2 archives.
  172.  
  173.   10. "Next volume" dialog allows to modify not only a name,
  174.       but also a size of next volume, so you may create volumes
  175.       of different size. This dialog is displayed if you create
  176.       volumes on removable disks or set "Pause after each volume"
  177.       option in "Advanced" part of archiving dialog.

  179.   11. Several -v<size> switches can be specified in the command
  180.       line mode to set different sizes for different volumes.
  181.       For example, 'rar a -v100k -v200k -v300k arcname' command
  182.       sets 100 KB size for first volume, 200KB for second
  183.       and 300KB for all following volumes.

  185.   12. More WinRAR commands support Unicode in archive names.
  186.       If your Windows is NT based (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, 2003),
  187.       you may modify archives with non-English names regardless
  188.       of Regional Settings.

  219.       entering their names manually.

  221.   22. WinRAR understands quotes inside of parameters in the command
  222.       line mode. For example, "-pmy password" and -p"my password"
  223.       will set the same password. Eariler WinRAR understood only
  224.       the first syntax ("-pmy password") and only the console RAR
  225.       handled both.

  227.   23. Data analyzing module is tuned to detect executable and audio
  228.       data more accurately. Erroneous selecting of executable
  229.       and audio algorithms could reduce the compression ratio
  230.       in some situations.

  232.   24. WinRAR understands the command line switch -hp without
  233.       a parameter and requests to enter a password when processing it.

  235.   25. WinRAR preserves NTFS streams of updated archives, if archive
  236.       and temporary files are resided on NTFS partition. For example,
  237.       if you entered some comments in "Summary" section of archive
  238.       properties, they will not be lost when updating an archive
  239.       using WinRAR. Do not confuse NTFS streams of archive itself
  240.       and streams of archived files, latter can be preserved
  241.       by previous versions as well.

  243.   26. It is possible to prohibit change of archiving password
  244.       with "WinRAR\Policy\Password" Registry value. This feature
  245.       may help to avoid encrypting of important data in multi-user
  246.       environment. Read "Configuration settings/Registry variables"

  249.   27. "Select toolbar buttons" dialog allows to specify separators
  250.       after any toolbar button.

  252.   28. New console RAR -si[name] switch to compress data from stdin
  253.       (standard input).

  255.   29. Console RAR 'vt' and 'lt' commands display symlink target names,
  256.       when listing RAR/Unix archives contained symbolic links.
