1.0 Overview
============
1.1 What is SpeedCommander?
---------------------------
SpeedCommander offers a graphical interface to manage files and folders. You
can copy and move files with SpeedCommander, launch applications, print
documents, manage files and drives, delete files as well as archive them.
It combines the advantages of Windows⌐ 95/98/2000 & NT 4.0 with a comfortable
two-window structure. Every item is displayed with an icon which informs the
user about the file type.
1.2 Network Neighborhood
------------------------
Through the virtual drive "Network Neighborhood" you can browse every computer
and printer on your network and work with it. No longer do you have to link
network drives by assigning alphabetic drive letters. Through the network
environment you can browse computers on all the networks you are connected to.
1.3 Many Supported Archive Formats
----------------------------------
SpeedCommander manages archived files just like normal folders. This means
that you won't need any additional compression software to work with archives.
SpeedCommander uses the Squeez technology, one of the fastest compression and
decompression engines for the most common archive formats. Thanks to Squeez,
you can work with the archive formats ARJ, ZIP, LHA, RAR, CAB, ACE, GZIP, TAR
and UUE to compress and extract. Furthermore you can create self-extracting
archives. Extracting such archives does not require any additional software.
If the archive is too large to fit on to one disk, SpeedCommander can split
the archive in several files. Archives can be created in one of two ways:
The Compression Wizard makes it especially easy for inexperienced users to
create archives. Advanced users might want to save time and go through a short
dialog box with predefined settings.
1.4 Secure Encryption
---------------------
Files can be encrypted with a password when using the compression algorithms
of SpeedCommander. Nevertheless, this approach is not very secure. A further
disadvantage is that even though the files themselves are encrypted, their
names are still readable. For this purpose, SpeedCommander offers a new
encryption method. Files are compressed using a new and highly effective
algorithm, and then encrypted with either the DES or Triple DES algorithm.
In addition, the header of the encrypted file can be password-protected. This
even blocks access to the file names inside the encrypted archive without
knowing the access password.
1.5 Integrated Internet Explorer
--------------------------------
Working on the Internet gains more and more importance. The "Internet" icon
allows Web access within SpeedCommander. For this purpose, SpeedCommander
integrates the Microsoft Internet Explorer.
1.6 Integrated Quick View
-------------------------
Surely you have faced the following situation: You have received a file, but
you are unable to view it, because you are missing the appropiate software on
your system. SpeedCommander can help -- its integrated viewer supports the
following file formats:
- Windows Bitmap
- Paintbrush PCX
- JPEG
- Kodak Photo CD
- TIFF 6.0 Baseline
- Windows Metafile
- Multimedia
- Text
1.7 FTP Server Access
---------------------
A seemingly countless amount of software can be found on many web servers.
Most of these files can be transferred to your PC using the FTP protocol.
This is another area where SpeedCommander can help: Simply enter the address
of the FTP server you wish to access; SpeedCommander will promptly connect
you. SpeedCommander will display the files in the same way as local files on
your PC. To download, simply select the files to be transferred and copy them
on to your PC. Of course files can also be copied from your PC on to the FTP
server, for instance if you wish to update your personal homepage. SC also
supports access through firewalls and proxy servers.
1.8 SpeedView and SpeedEdit
---------------------------
SpeedEdit is a simple and universal program to edit text files. You can edit
in ANSI mode as well as ASCII mode. SpeedEdit includes a print preview to let
you check out the formatting of documents before printing. SpeedView displays
files of selected types without having to load a separate application.
Both SpeedView and SpeedEdit are included with SpeedCommander at no additional
charge!
1.9 Support for Quick View Plus
-------------------------------
Unfortunately we could not renew our contract with the Inso Corporation.
Therefore we were supposed to drop the support for Quick View Plus.
