  7. This document provides information regarding the use of TweakUI on Windows 
  8. 98.  The most current information on TweakUI, including updates, can be

  41. TweakUI is a productivity tool for advanced users that adjusts some of the
  42. settings for the Windows User Interface.  Some options available in TweakUI
  43. are available in other configuration screens and some options are unique to
  44. TweakUI.

  46. TweakUI offers configuration options for the following areas:

  68. TweakUI is intended for the advanced user.  
  69.  
  70. Changes made in TweakUI change settings in the registry and can affect the
  71. behavior and appearance of Windows.  While this provides a greater level of
  72. customization, it also presents a greater risk of making changes that will
  73. leave Windows in an unusable state.

  75. It is recommended that you backup you registry before making any changes in
  76. TweakUI.  To backup your registry, you can click on Start/Run and type in
  77. "Scanregw" (without the quotes).

  85. Great care has been taken to ensure that TweakUI operates as it should. But
  86. please keep in mind, this tool is not a part of Windows and is not supported 
  87. by Microsoft. For this reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to 
  88. answer questions about TweakUI.

  90. By using this unsupported tool, you are using them at your own risk.

  94. 4. Setup Instructions

  98. TweakUI uses an .inf file for installing.
  99.  
  100. 1) Find the TweakUI.inf file in the TweakUI folder on the Windows 98 CD.
  101. 2) Right click on TweakUI.inf and choose Install
  102. 3) Follow the directions on the screen.

  110. To uninstall TweakUI:
  111.  
  112. 1) Click on Start/Settings and choose Control Panel
  113. 2) In Control Panel, choose Add/Remove Programs
  114. 3) Under the Install/Uninstall tab, hilite TweakUI and click on the 
  115.    Add/Remove button.
  116. 4) Follow the steps on the screen.

  118. Note: uninstalling TweakUI will not restore any changes made by TweakUI.

  122. 6. Frequently Asked Questions

  126. Q.  On some tabs there's a Restore Factory Settings button and on other tabs
  127.     there's not. Why?
  128.  
  129. A.  On the tabs that offer the Restore Factory Settings button, the default
  130.     Windows value for that option is clearly understood.  On tabs that do 
  131.     not offer the button, the values could be different depending on how 
  132.     Windows was installed.

  134. Q.  On the General Tab is a list of Special Folders with an option to change
  135.     locations.  What are all of these and what impact is there on changing
  136.     them?
  137.  
  138. A.  These are system folders that are defined by Windows during install.  
  139.     Some users may want to change the locations of these folders for a 
  140.     variety of reasons.  A few cautionary notes about changing Special 
  141.     Folder locations:
  142.  
  143.     1) Changing the Special Folder locations will not copy over the
  144.        information from the old location to the new.
  145.  
  146.     2) Do not point 2 or more Special Folders to the same location.
  147.  
  148.     3) Do not point a Special Folder to a system folder like the Fonts 
  149.            folder.

  151. Q.  The My Computer tab allows me to hide drives on my system.  What impact 
  152.     will this have?
  153.  
  154. A.  Hiding drives will affect other functionality.  For instance, if you 
  155.     hide drives, the Explore and Open options on a right click on the Start 
  156.     Menu will be grayed out.
  157.  
  158. Q.  The Repair Tab offers a Repair System Files option.  How does this 
  159.     relate to System File Checker?
  160.  
  161. A.  System File Checker is a new support utility for Windows 98.  System 
  162.     File Checker provides a broader scope of checking system files and 
  163.     correcting any problems.

  165. Q.  Where can I find the latest information on TweakUI?

  167. A.  The latest information on TweakUI can be found on the Windows 98 
  168.     website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98.  You can also find current
