SnagIt (32-bit) is an excellent screen, text, and video capture and conversion utility.
You can capture the screen, a window, a window client area, the last active window, or a region of the screen which you define with your mouse. Images can be saved as BMP, PCX, TIF, GIF, PNG or JPEG formats or you can save desktop animation sequences, including video and user interface activities, as AVI files (complete with sound). With JPEG, you can specify the level of compression you want (from 1% to 99%). Options include the showing or hiding the cursor, automatic scaling, image effects, color reduction, monochrome conversion, dithering, and conversion to grayscale.
Besides saving your screen shots, you have the option of automatically sending them to the printer (using a variety of formatting options such as "Fit Image to Page") or the Windows Clipboard, or include them with an E-mail message.
If you're doing a lot of screen captures, you'll appreciate being able to define hotkeys and allowing SnagIt to automatically assign file names. An advanced "active capture" function lets you capture the contents of windows that have scrolled vertically off the screen. This is ideal for capturing complete Web pages.
SnagIt has the unique ability to convert text blocks displayed on the Windows desktop to machine readable text, even where Cut and Paste does not work. Examples include text blocks in Encarta, the directory and files windows of the Windows 95 File Explorer and the message header windows in the Exchange Client.
The program supports DDE so that other applications can control and automate screen capturing.
This latest release includes shell commands in the catalog browser.
