Many thanks to this round of beta testers who made suggestions:
Chris Peterman, and many of those listed above.
11/30/98 - version 1.1e posted.
Okay, getting near final BETA here folks, so please send bug reports ASAP.
Thanks! Added more modem stuff. Inf file and "extra settings" are now reported.
Cleaned up some of the help and menus.
12/5/98 - version 1.2 posted to winsite and nonags. (1st non-beta version)
Uncommented some code, removed some old unused variables and a timer,
and moved the first run "settings" dialog box so it pops up
when user first tries to send instead of when program is loading.
This seemed more logical, and fixed a bug....
----------- What's ITSDiag DO ? ------------
ITSDiag (Internet Tech Support Diagnostics) checks a users computer for
it's Internet, Network, and Modem configuration, then can analyze the results
and make some real world suggestions to improve connection quality and speed.
Based on years of Tech Support Experience, ITSDiag can really help with many
common types of problems.
First: ITSDiag checks the computer for user's e-mail and browser software and
settings. Then ITSDiag checks Network Settings and Preferences.
Second: ITSDiag can act as a terminal program, and automatically or
manually check the modem by sending AT commands that produce significant info
about the modem. This info is helpful to Tech Support, because many modems
report connection quality, line quality and firmware revision numbers.
Third: ITSDIag can analyze the data it collected, and make some recommendations
based on what it "knows" about Windows networking and Modem technology.
A good percentage of computers connected to the Internet are not optimized in ways
ITSDiag recommends.
Fourth: This report can be sent via the program's built in e-mail funtion to the
Tech Support Department of the user's ISP. The built in e-mail and dialup networking
functions are as simple as possible to help users to succeed in sending the report.
The ISP can respond with recommendations to improve the customers connection quality
based on the equipment that the ISP is using.
--------- WHY? ---------------
Tech Support costs for ISP's are costing customers and ISPs BIG BUCKS.
ITSDiag helps by supplying your ISP with a larger amount of information
quickly, thereby allowing them to more quickly isolate problems
on client's computers.
Any decent tech support department can make use of this info
to help customers to attain the highest speed and, most reliable
connection possible.
The user will presumably be able to "check with Tech Support" by
simply running the program and following the software's suggested
course of action. This will save many hours of phone calls to tech
support, give the customer a more timely solution to problems,
and present another avenue of support to the customer.
-------Custom and Future Versions--------
If you are an ISP, or work for one, and would like to utilize this type of
software, but want it Customized with Your ISP's Name, please contact the
author at either ken@saber.net or ken@pacific.net. Depending on the amount of
customization, this can be a very inexpensive modification to the program.
Some Customized possibilities:
1. A custom splash screen when the program starts, with your logo.
2. A custom program name, window captions, and icons.
3. Custom settings check. (add / remove program settings to the report).
(settings stored in ini files, other files, or in the registry can be reported)
4. Free upgrades to new versions, automatically customized the same way.
The customized version will be free. You only pay for the modifications you request.
-------Saving Test Results-----------
Users can save test results before sending so that they have a copy of the
ITSDiag results.
