  7. about Norton CrashGuard Deluxe. Topics include:

  20. Installation

  23. Disk Space
  24. ==========
  25. If you are very low on disk space, the installation process might freeze at the
  26. "Norton CrashGuard Deluxe is preparing the InstallShield wizard" dialog box. To
  27. recover from this condition, press Ctrl+Alt+Del, then select _DELISU in the
  28. list. Then click End Task. If the InstallShield wizard then starts, click Cancel
  29. and free up at least 30 MB of disk space before attempting to install.
  30.  
  31. Microsoft recommends that any system running Windows have at least 23 MB of free
  32. disk space. Otherwise, Windows may have problems with it's swap file, resulting
  33. in unexpected errors.
  34.  
  35. InstallShield Error 112
  36. =======================
  37. This error usually points to there being a problem with your temp directory,
  38. temp setting, or not enough hard drive space. Check to ensure that you have
  39. enough free space on your hard drive and check the temp properties by using
  40. following steps.
  41.  
  42.  1. Click the Windows Start button and select Run.
  43.  2. Type in SYSEDIT and click OK.
  44.  3. In the AUTOEXEC.BAT window, look for a line that says SET TEMP=.
  45.  4. Check to ensure that the TEMP directory listed exists and is empty.
  46.  
  47. "No Scans Registered" Error Message
  48. ===================================
  49. The first time you install Norton CrashGuard Deluxe, you may encounter the error
  50. message "No scans are registered on your computer. You must uninstall and then
  51. install CrashGuard Deluxe."  This can be caused by either an application
  52. conflict or corruption of the Windows registry.  Use the following steps to
  53. resolve this issue:
  54.  
  55.  1. Verify the file REGSVR32.EXE exists in your \Windows\System directory.
  56.  2. Rename the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files located in your root directory
  57.     (normally c:\).
  58.  3. Change your video driver to standard VGA and reboot.
  59.  4. Close all other running programs and any icons in the system tray.
  60.  5. Run the ADDCAT.EXE program in the Norton CrashGuard Deluxe program directory
  61.     (default location is c:\Program Files\Norton CrashGuard Deluxe).
  62.  
  63. If performing these steps does not resolve this issue, try the following:
  64.  
  65.  1. Uninstall Norton CrashGuard Deluxe, Norton CrashGuard, Norton Web Services,
  66.     and DCOM for Windows 95. You can do this by double-clicking Add/Remove
  67.     Programs in the Control Panel and selecting these programs in the list.
  68.  2. Restart your computer when you finish uninstalling the programs.
  69.  3. Insert the Norton CrashGuard Deluxe CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  70.  4. Click the Windows Start button and select Run. Then click Browse and locate
  71.     the \DISK1 folder on the Norton CrashGuard Deluxe CD.
  72.  5. Select DCOM95.EXE and click Open. Then click OK to install DCOM95.
  73.  6. After you install DCOM95, click Yes when prompted to restart your computer.
  74.  7. When Windows restarts, install Norton CrashGuard Deluxe from the
  75.     Norton CrashGuard Deluxe CD.
  76.  8. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder where you installed Norton
  77.     CrashGuard Deluxe. Then double-click ADDCAT.EXE to register the Norton
  78.     CrashGuard Deluxe scans.
  79.  
  80. If this issue still persists after performing the above steps, the cause is most
  81. likely due to corruption of the Windows registry.  Microsoft has not released
  82. any information on the internal structure of the Windows registry or any tools
  83. to fix registry corruption.  As a result, in order to resolve this you may have
  84. to delete your registry files, reinstall Windows 95 and reinstall all software
  85. applications.

  89. DCOM for Windows 95
  90. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  92. What is DCOM?
  93. =============
  94. The Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) is a Microsoft update to the
  95. Component Object Model (COM) and Object Linking/Embedding (OLE) files in
  96. Windows 95.  These files provide improved support for reusable code in Windows.
  97. For more information, go to Microsoft's web site and search for DCOM.

  99. DCOM Installation Issues
  100. ========================
  101. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe installs DCOM for Windows 95. DCOM for Windows 95 must
  102. be installed on your computer in order to run Norton CrashGuard Deluxe.
  103.  
  104. The Microsoft DCOM installer always overwrites previously installed DCOM files,
  105. even if the files being overwritten are newer than the DCOM files being
  106. installed. This might cause problems while running applications that require the
  107. latest version of DCOM. If DCOM related problems occur, download the latest
  108. version of DCOM from Microsoft's web site and install it on your computer.
  109.  
  110. Removing DCOM
  111. =============
  112. Uninstalling DCOM will prevent Norton CrashGuard Deluxe from functioning
  113. properly. If your DCOM installation is removed or corrupt, you can reinstall it
  114. from the Norton CrashGuard Deluxe CD. Use Windows Explorer to open the \DISK1
  115. folder on the CD. Then double-click on DCOM95.EXE to install DCOM.

  117. Outlook 97 Issues
  118. =================
  119. After you install Norton CrashGuard Deluxe, Outlook 97 might not function
  120. properly. The program might not start at all, cause a General Protection Fault
  121. (GPF) error, or lock up. This problem is usually the result of a conflict
  122. between DCOM for Windows 95 and the Microsoft Fax service. Microsoft has
  123. provided a detailed technical note at the following web site that discusses the
  124. problem and provides a solution:

  128. Microsoft provides five possible solutions to this problem. The easiest way to
  129. resolve the problem is to download and install the new AWFXCG32.DLL file that
  130. Microsoft has provided to fix this error. To download this file, visit this

  137. Rescue Disk
  138. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  139.  
  140. Requirements
  141. ===========
  142. The Rescue Disk utility requires a 3.5" floppy disk drive configured as the boot
  143. floppy drive. Rescue Disk also requires three 3.5" floppy disks.
  144.  
  145. Rescue Disk Freezes
  146. ===================
  147. If Rescue Disk freezes while you are creating Rescue Disks, formatting the
  148. floppy disks prior to creating the Rescue Disks may prevent this problem from
  149. occurring.

  151. Running Rescue Disk Recovery
  152. ============================
  153. Rescue Disk recovery must be run from DOS. Running Rescue Disk recovery from a
  154. DOS window inside Windows is not supported.

  158. Compatibility Issues

  161. Disk Overlay
  162. ============
  163. When using Dynamic Disk Overlay (DDO) software, such as EZDrive or OnTrack's
  164. DiskManager, Rescue Disk recovery must be run in accordance with the disk
  165. overlay floppy disk boot procedures.
  166.  
  167. Promise Ultra33
  168. ===============
  169. Computers that use the Promise Ultra33 IDE hard drive controller (included with
  170. some Gateway 2000 G6 computers) might experience compatibility problems with
  171. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe conflicts with Promise driver
  172. version 1.30. This problem does not exist with version 1.33 of this driver,
  173. which you can download from:

  177. or by contacting Promise Technical Support. If you do not have version 1.33 or
  178. later of this driver, do not use Norton CrashGuard Deluxe to repair errors on
  179. your hard disk.

  181. SoftRAM95
  182. =========
  183. Microsoft has determined that SoftRAM95 is not compatible with Windows 95 and it
  184. should not be used with Norton CrashGuard Deluxe.
  185.  
  186. Stacker
  187. =======
  188. You might encounter a blue screen fatal error when installing Norton CrashGuard
  189. Deluxe on a drive with Stacker. To fix this problem, update to the latest
  190. version of Stacker.
  191.  
  192. Norton Navigator
  193. ================
  194. If Norton Navigator 95.0.b is installed on your system, you might receive a
  195. Mem_Bad_Pointer error while using the Edit Solution on invalid .PIF, .URL, or
  196. .LNK files. Update to version 95.0.c of Norton Navigator to fix this problem.

  201. Norton Web Services
  202. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  204. Subscription Required
  205. =====================
  206. LiveUpdate Pro requires an active Norton Web Services subscription. Norton Web
  207. Services is an Internet-based service designed to enhance your computer and keep
  208. it healthy. The annual subscription fee is $29.95.

  210. Free Subscription
  211. =================
  212. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe includes a free 6-month subscription to Norton Web
  213. Services. To initialize your subscription, read the instructions on the Norton
  214. Web Services coupon in the Norton CrashGuard Deluxe box.

  216. Disk Space
  217. ==========
  218. Over time, entries in Norton CrashGuard Deluxe's undo folder can occupy a
  219. significant amount of disk space. If you use the Undo feature to reverse events
  220. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe performed, you should regularly delete all log entries
  221. and the contents of your C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\UndoData
  222. folder.

  226. America Online (AOL)
  227. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  228.  
  229. Version Compatibility
  230. =====================
  231. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe works with AOL for Windows 95 v3.0 or later. The
  232. standard 16-bit versions of AOL software do not support Norton CrashGuard
  233. Deluxe. Order AOL for Windows 95 on CD from America Online, or download it by
  234. using the AOL keyword: GET95.
  235.  
  236. If you are not sure which version of AOL you have, check the date on the file
  237. WAOL.EXE in your AOL directory. The date must be 10/8/96 or later to support
  238. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe.
  239.  
  240. Difficulty Connecting
  241. =====================
  242. If you install AOL for Windows 95 and have difficulty connecting to the Internet
  243. through Norton CrashGuard Deluxe, reinstall the TCP/IP components, dial-up
  244. adapters, and AOL adapters on your system. To do this, follow these steps:
  245.  
  246.  1. Double-click your My Computer icon. Then double-click the Control Panel
  247.     icon.
  248.  2. Double-click the Network icon.
  249.  3. In the list of installed network components, remove all TCP/IP
  250.     components, Dial-Up Adapters, and AOL Adapters.
  251.  4. Restart your computer.
  252.  5. Start America Online. AOL installs the correct drivers and asks you
  253.     to restart the computer.
  254.  
  255. If Norton CrashGuard Deluxe still has problems connecting to the Internet,
  256. contact technical support. See the Norton CrashGuard Deluxe manual for more
  257. information.
  258.  
  259. Virus Definitions
  260. =================
  261. In order to download virus definitions and product updates through LiveUpdate,
  262. you must open your AOL connection prior to starting the LiveUpdate process. If
  263. there are virus definitions or product updates available, launch AOL and login.
  264. Once you've logged in, minimize AOL and start the LiveUpdate process. When asked
  265. how you want to connect to a LiveUpdate server, select Internet.
  266.  
  267. LiveUpdate Pro Scan
  268. ===================
  269. When you use System Check, if the LiveUpdate Pro Scan is enabled, System Check
  270. searches your system for hardware and software drivers that are out of date. If
  271. the scan detects any hardware or software patches or updates are available,
  272. System Check takes you to the Norton Web Services web page where you can run
  273. LiveUpdate Pro.
  274.  
  275. When you use LiveUpdate Pro through AOL, Norton Web Services launches inside
  276. your AOL browser. Your Norton Web Services login is not complete until the AOL
  277. advertisements finish displaying. To disable these login advertisements, use the
  278. AOL keyword: MARKETING PREFERENCES.

  282. CompuServe
  283. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  285. CompuServe Winsock
  286. ==================
  287. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe is not compatible with CompuServe's Winsock. When
  288. installing CompuServe Information Manager for Windows 95, do not install the
  289. CompuServe Winsock.

  296. Internet Connection Settings
  297. ============================
  298. If you have more than one dial-up connection, like an Internet Service Provider
  299. and an AOL account, you'll be prompted during install to select which connection
  300. you want to use.  You can also change these settings after installation in
  301. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe Settings.  To do this, open Norton CrashGuard Deluxe.
  302. Then click Settings in the main window.  Click the Internet tab to select the
  303. connection you would like to use.

  305. Auto Check Shortcut
  306. ===================
  307. The Norton CrashGuard Deluxe installation places an Auto Check shortcut in your
  308. Windows 95 StartUp folder. This shortcut launches Auto Check automatically every
  309. time you start Windows.

  311. Virus Defs & Product Update Scan
  312. ================================
  313. The Virus Defs & Product Update Scan launches LiveUpdate to update your virus
  314. definitions and Norton CrashGuard Deluxe program files.  If you do not have an
  315. Internet connection, LiveUpdate dials a long-distance phone number to download
  316. the latest updates. To control how LiveUpdate connects for these updates, change
  317. LiveUpdate settings by double-clicking the LiveUpdate icon in the Windows
  318. Control Panel.

  320. User Guide
  321. ==========
  322. The online version of the Norton CrashGuard Deluxe User Guide contains the most
  323. up-to-date information about the product. The Adobe Acrobat file, CGDELUXE.PDF
  324. and a copy of the Acrobat Reader, AR32E301.EXE, are located in the Manual folder
  325. on the Norton CrashGuard Deluxe CD.
