~Hereos Of Might And Magic
Tips by Lu Richardson
If you've played this type of game before, you'll know exactly what
to do. However, for those new to it, here are a few tips.
Play the tutorial first to get the hang of it. You will notice that
lack of money and resources will hamper your progress and slow the
game down. If you wish to cheat, save your game at the beginning
and, using the Norton Utilities, edit it. Go to hex offset 16F; the
number here, and the other five at the end of the following blocks,
correspond to the resources. Change them to FF to get 255 of each.
Please note that this might have some funny effects, though they
won't matter too much. The offset for the money is at 187; change
the number here to A0 25 26 for loads of cash.
As to the strategy, start by building first all the fighter
producing units (recruiting from them immediately), then the well,
the tavern and the magic guild; keep adding to this till it's
complete. Buy fighters every time they become available: get to
know which are the most effective fighting units, give those to your
hero and leave the rest in the garrison.
As you proceed catiously around, exploring, fighting, taking over
mines and so on, spot any buildings or camps whose inhabitants want
to join you. There will be more of these kindly folks at regular
intervals.
Basically, you want to go back to your garrison frequently, to pick
up more fighters and leave your least effective troops, and also to
visit the magic guild to renew your spells. Remember that although
troops are not available at the end of each turn, structures can
and should be built.
As you advance in the game, your first aim is to acquire villages or
castles as soon as possible and build them up to produce more
fighters. When your hero is well equipped with troops and
sufficient numbers are being produced in other villages/towns, you
can hire another hero and widen your activities; but don't leave
your bases unprotected.
I found that dragons and paladins were the most effective units, so
it is a good idea to have one of your heros using just these to
undertake the most difficult fights.
Finally, when you've uncovered all the puzzle in each scenario,
don't forget to dig in the spot marked x!
