~The Dig
Reviewed by Brian W. Albers (Originally posted on the Internet)
Reviewed on a 100 MHz Pentium, with 16 megs Ram, Quad speed CD,
Sound Blaster AWE32 and Windows 95.
~First impressions:
Install - Easy, few files if any installed. Detected sound card
automatically. There is a different icon for 8 megs and 16+ megs, so
I guess the second one has the ability to optimize for more memory.
Very little packaging, but a new Adventurer is inside.
Graphics - Not surprisingly, the 320x200 does _not_ look dated to me.
Mostly because the artwork is so superb (like a sci-fi version of Full
Throttle). There is a raw beauty to the early space scenes, which
reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey. No option for SVGA, so don't
ask. I think some scenes from the demo have been refined.
Sound - WOW! All sound is digital, including music... making me think
that this is a definite trend. Voices and sound effects are crisp and
effective, but the music is fabulous. A classical score which
_doesn't_ grate on the nerves, and shifts seamlessly.
Voice acting - Competent so far, although Brink (German scientist) has
a semi-annoying accent. Familiar voices from earlier LEC games. The
dialog is definitely on par with LEC's earlier games (DOTT, S&M, FT),
and the lines are witty and just technical enough when they need to
be.
Gameplay - So far, I'm below the surface of the planet, and the first
puzzles have been easy. Not Full Throttle easy, but easy nonetheless.
But I'm already stuck, so things look promising at this point. If
there are 200 locations in this game, I've got a _long_ way to go.
Interface - Similar to Sam and Max. Hot spots on the screen turn the
generic cross icon blue, but the icon does not change for different
actions. This might be too simplistic for some, but so far I haven't
had a problem with it.
So far, the game looks to be on par with previous LEC games -- if you
are a fan of the company (as I am), I'd recommend this one.
