// Quick Start
##text [QUICK_START] Quick Start (Using the supplied utilities)
By now, you really should have used BINSTALL.EXE to get these files installed
somewhere on your computer's hard drive system. Since we cannot know where
you have installed Bölz! on your computer, we created a small batch file in
the root directory of drive C: during installation to automatically load and
run Bölz! for you. ##para
The command you should use to start Bölz! is C:\BOLZ.BAT followed by the Enter
key. This will tell DOS to execute the instructions located in the file
BOLZ.BAT located in the root directory of your C: drive. ##para
If you would prefer, BINSTALL has an option at the Main Menu to "Create a Boot
Disk." This is the most reliable and easy-to-use method of running Bölz! on
your computer. You will need one blank diskette to take advantage of this
feature. ##para
##exact_text
There are two very easy ways to use your boot disk:
1. Place the disk drive A: before you turn your computer on.
2. Place the disk in drive A: then reboot your computer. This is done by
exiting Windows (if necessary) then pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del all at the
same time.
##end ##para
In either case above, your computer will start itself using the instructions
stored on the boot disk. These instructions will: Load DOS, change to the
drive onto which you have installed Bölz!, change to the subdirectory into
which you have installed Bölz!, run Bölz! ##para
After you are finished playing Bölz! (and have used the boot disk to run Bölz!
according to these instructions), you will want to remove the boot disk from
your A: drive then reboot your computer or turn it off. This will restore
your computer system to the exact conditions you enjoy day-to-day, and makes
Bölz! non-intrusive to your system. ##para
No part of your system's configuration was changed during the installaton
procedures except for the fact that Bölz! now reliably exists in the path you
specified.

// Uninstalling Bölz!
##text [UNINSTAL] Uninstalling Bölz!
##exact_text
Should you want to remove Bölz! from your computer system:
1. Insert Disk 1 of your disk set into your diskette drive.
2. Type the letter of that drive (either A or B) followed by a colon (:)
then press Enter.
3. Type UNINSTAL then press Enter.
##end ##para
You will be prompted if this is what you really wanted to do. If you answer
Yes then all traces of Bölz! will be removed from your computer. Should you
wish to play Bölz! again after removing it from your computer, you will,
obviously, have to run BINSTALL again.

// Getting Started
##text [GETTING_STARTED] Getting Started (Running Bölz!)
We understand that DOS can be complicated to PC users, so we have created
several solutions to help you run Bölz! with only a minimal amount of effort.
Bölz! is DOS software for one reason only: Performance! ##para
The absolute easiest way to run Bölz! is to use BINSTALL to create a boot
diskette which can be used to start your computer any time you want to run
Bölz! This diskette, when used during bootup in drive A:, will start your
computer then load and run Bölz! automatically. Refer to the Quick Start
section for the full details of using a boot disk. ##para
The second easiest way to run Bölz! is to start your computer normally (no
boot disk required), exit Windows (if necessary), type C:\BOLZ.BAT then press
Enter. During installaton, BINSTALL created this batch file in the root
directory of drive C: with all the information you provided in order to run
Bölz! on your system. ##para
Finally, you can type the necessary DOS commands yourself. This is prefered
by some users who are very familiar with DOS and its commands, but you will
need to know exactly where you have placed Bölz! on your computer system and
how to get there. Since we do not know where you have placed Bölz!, the only
help we can give you here is that the name of the file you want to execute is
BOLZ.EXE. It is located in the directory you specified during installation. ##para
Once you run Bölz! by performing one of the three options above, you will
begin to hear some music (sound card owners only). After a few screens
(shareware/diskette) or animations (CD-ROM), you will be presented with the
Title Screen (displaying the word, "Bölz!" against a 3D rendered background).
When you are ready to enter the world of Bölz!, press any key while viewing
this screen. ##para

[MOVEMENT] == [ARROW KEYS], [JOYSTICK DIRECTION]
[GO BACK] == [ESCAPE KEY], [FIRE BUTTON 2]
##end ##para

this is your first run). Next, press the [SELECTOR]. Your game will begin

// Game Play Descriptions
##text [GENERAL_GAME] General Game Play
Game Play in Bölz! appears to be simple at first, but you will soon discover
the complexity of this game. There are literally hundreds of different
hidden rooms, powerups, bonus items, obstacles, etc. in Bölz! ##para
Bölz! is fast-paced, so keep your eyes peeled at all times! Pay attention! ##para
You are a ball attempting to rescue your friends from the grip of Billy Bölz,
a spoiled, eight-year-old boy who, one day, decided he would like to have
all the balls in the world. ##para
You must wonder through Billy's ultra-large maze playgrounds looking for
clues as to how to get through to the next part of the maze and eventually
on to the next level. ##para
There are four Zones in Bölz!, each consisting of five levels. That's 20 huge
mazes to explore! Hope you have some free time on your hands! ##para
In each maze, there can be up to three different color lazer gates and/or
doors. The colors are Red, Green and Blue. There will also be several
Security Switches on the floor. You must roll over these switches which
will turn them off. Once you have turned off all Security Switches of the
same color, that color gate and/or door will open, allowing you to pass
through to the next part of the maze/level. Take note of the locations of
gates/doors as you travel about the mazes! ##para
In Zone 1, The Industrial Zone, you will see mostly blue walls which make up
the maze. Your ball cannot go through these walls, nor can it jump over them
(they're way too high!). Be on the lookout, however, for cracked wall
segments! They're secret passages into hidden rooms and warps and can be
broken through by bumping into them. They will crumble, allowing you to
pass. ##para
Also, in Zone 1, you will see large areas of rushing water. Billy went
around the mazes, breaking open the large pipes because he knows that balls
float and have a hard time treading water. No problem -- he forgot about
the shut-off valves located somewhere in the mazes! Find them, and you'll
be able to pass where water would normally just rush you down a drain! ##para

##text [BOLZ_BALLS] The Balls of Bölz!
You may select to be one of three balls while playing Bölz! The choices are
as follows: ##para
##exact_text
SoccerBall
The SoccerBall is a great average ball. Its acceleration is good, it has
a normal top speed and corners well. The SoccerBall's jumping abilities
are average.
RubberBall
The RubberBall is good for beginners and younger children. It has a near
instant acceleration to its very low top speed. The RubberBall has the
best cornering abilities, but has the best jumping abilities of all the
balls.
BowlingBall
The BowlingBall is for the expert player! This is, by far, the heaviest
ball, and it cannot jump very high. Also, because of its weight, its
acceleration is slow - but - the top speed on this ball is the highest
of all three balls! Now, combine that extra weight and high speed, and
you're bound to discover that cornering is less than that of, say, a
sports car. Those who master the BowlingBall will enjoy the best maze
times and usually get the highest scores!

##text [GAME_ENEMIES] Enemy Robot Balls
Keep your eyes open for the demonic robot balls. Billy has created these
to stop you as you roam the mazes (hey, he wants to keep what he's got, and
wants to add YOU to his collection!). They exist in six (6) varieties: ##para
All versions of Bölz! have the following ## enemy characters ## ##pic3 ##para
##exact_text
SpikeBall
The SpikeBall has four large metallic spikes around it. It is silverish
in color, and can be destroyed by jumping on it. Generally, it will
either attempt to chase you or run away from you. Judge your jumps
carefully, as bumping into this ball will cost you health points rather
quickly!!
PinBall
The PinBall is quite unique! It has four razor-sharp pins around it with
one pin sticking straight up. These pins animated in and out. Only
when its top pin is retracted may you jump on it. Otherwise, you will
be pricked by the top pin, causing a loss of health.
TankBall
The TankBall is vicious. It's electrically charged body is hazardous
to touch from any side. It can be jumped on, but beware! It will shoot
a glowing blue PlasmaBall at you at random! You cannot jump over or on
top of these plasmaballs as they are easily attracted to your ball.
##end ##para
The following ## enemy characters ## ##pic4 are in the Registered Versions
of Bölz! only. ##para
##exact_text
SuperSpike
The SuperSpike behaves much like the SpikeBall, but is much more
aggressive. Found in most levels after Zone 1, the SuperSpike will
charge at you equalling YOUR top speed! This means that either you
jump on it or be damaged. . .hint, when you see these -- avoid them!
PlasmaBall
A much larger variety of what the TankBall uses as a weapon! This
large blue ball has arcing lighning bolts around its edges. Needless
to say, touching this ball from the side will cause a SEVERE amount
of damage to your ball, and it is very aggressive!
LightFire
The LightFire, or FileBall, is hideous! This is Billy's best creation
to date! If it's on the screen, it's chasing you. Your only hope is to
time your jump just right to land directly on top of it and disperse
its gasses. Best of luck!

There are many other ## obstacles ## ##pic7 located throughout the mazes.
Be careful!

##text [GAME_POWERUPS] Powerups!
We've given you several ## powerups ## ##pic8 to help you along the way. Here's a

##exact_text
Mapper
The mapper is the small, square area located at bottom-center on the
game play screen. It displays an area around you that you would not
otherwise be able to see. Use this display to your best advantage to
avoid things like dead-ends, etc. As you travel about the mazes, this
display will scroll along with you.
##end ##para
## Finders ## ##pic5
##exact_text
For each color Security Switch, there is an equal-colored Finder. The
Finders, when found, will allow you to see the Security Switches on the
Mapper. These become more rare as level numbers increase, and become
increasingly difficult to find as time passes, but be on the lookout for
them. They appear as small boxes in the maze with either a Red, Green or
Blue dot in the center to indicate which Security Switches they help you
see.
COGnition Brand Adhesive Strips
Search for these bandages everywhere in the maze. When you pick one of
these up, it will provide a boost to your health. The size of the boost
depends on the skill level you have selected before starting the current
game as follows:
Easy Mode: 6 health points added
Normal Mode: 4 health points added
Extreme Mode: 2 health points added
SuperStrips
These adhesive strips have a glowing blue border around them, and are
worth 100 health points regardless of skill level selection. You can have,
at maximum, 200 health points in the game. So, if you already have 175
points, pass these up and save them for when you really need them,
remembering where they are as you go!
SpeedBall
The SpeedBall appears as a large pink ball with a large "S" on it. It
will double your speed for about 30 seconds, allowing you to cover more
maze in a shorter amount of time. Beware, though, that at these high
speeds, it's a bit harder to avoid the enemies! (Especially if the ball
you selected to use is 'bouncy').
SteelBall
The SteelBall will encase your ball in a protective steel shell. This
will make you invulnerable for about 30 seconds. You may simply roll
over any enemy characters you encounter, but beware -- the tank enemies
can still shoot you!! Hint: The SteelBall is of no use against Boss
Enemies!
##end ##para
There are many other items in the game. If you need some quick hints
on getting past a certain portion of the game, or would like to discuss
game play strategies with a Bölz! expert (maybe even a member of COGniton
Development Team), please call 1-412-261-9123 during our regular business
hours! Request "Bölz! Hints and Secrets" from the operator! ##para
If you do not want to call us for help, try playing at a lower skill level
to start. From the Main Menu, select Game Options. Next, position the
Yellow Arrow directly next to Skill Level. Press [SELECTOR] repeatedly to
scroll through the options (Easy (Nice Billy), Normal (Angry Billy) and
Extreme (Red, Upset, and Flaming Billy!)). Please note -- The "Extreme"
skill level is slightly less than fair to you as a game player! Enjoy! ##para

favorite gaming magazines! ##para

// The Bölz! Storyline
##text [STORYLINE] The Bölz! Storyline
The basic story of Bölz! is that, one day, an eight-year-old boy named
Billy Bölz! decided he would like to have all the balls in the world as
his own to play with. His father, being a millionaire, could easily afford
to buy him all the balls, so Billy went to his father one day. . . . ##para
##exact_text
"Dad, uh, I was wondering, ummmmm. . . ."
"Yes, son," said his father. "What is it?"
"Well," said Billy, "I was wondering if I could have some balls to
play with?"
"Sure son," said his father. "How many would you like?"
"Well," replied Billy, "I was thinking of all of them!"
"Now Billy," said his dad. "You can't have all of them. What will all the
other children play with?"
"NO, NO, NO!" interrupted Billy. "I want all of them, all of them, ALL OF
THEM!!"
"NOW BILLY!" exclaimed Billy's father. "-*-"
"Humph!" replied Billy in a rage, stomping off to his room.
-= Later That Day =-
Henry, Billy's butler, is shown entering Billy's Room carrying Billy's lunch
on a silver tray.
"Your lunch, sir." says Henry. "Will there be anything else?"
"Will there be anything else?" says Billy, obviously upset with something.
"Yes, Henry, there will be! How about all the BALLS IN THE WORLD!!!"
We now see Billy standing in front of a large projection screen displaying
several images of his designs:
"Since my dad won't buy me all the balls in the world, I'll have to
take them!" says Billy excitedly! "Now that my Vacuballopter is done,
I can send it out to get ALL THE BAAAALLLS!"
"Then I will use my BolBot to protect them!" says Billy confidently.
"Yes, sir." says Henry without expression.
##end ##para
"Humph!" replies Billy, rolling up the projection screen and darting off to
his supercomputer. He immediately begins playing with some knobs, and
we can hear the sound of a large helicopter-like device's engine starting up
outside on the Bölz! Mansion lawn. ##para
We watch as the Vacuballopter flies off toward the Chock-Full-O-Fun toy
factory, which is where all the balls in the world are made. We see through
the cockpit that it has the factory in its sights and is homing in. ##para
From inside the factory, we are looking at the roof of the building.
Suddenly, a large crash is heard as an unbelievably large vaccuum hose
smashes through the roof. It begins vaccuuming all the balls out of the
factory, storing them inside the Vacuballopter! Through all the confusion,
you manage to wriggle free and escape. ##para
We watch as the Vacuballopter retracts its hose and flies off, heading back to
Billy's Mansion! All your friends are gone. . . .the adventure begins!! ##para
##exact_text
NOTE: The CD-ROM version of Bölz! has the above script fully animated using a
combination of hand-drawn and 3D rendered animation techniques. There is
also a five minute animated intro showing Billy's ancestors attempting to
play with the ball throughout history, segues of Billy designing his
creations, and much, much more! Bölz! is more than just an action/
adventure game, it's an animated story with an excellent plot and moral
content suitable for the entire family.

// A word about shareware
##text [SHAREWORD] A word about Shareware
Shareware. It's often a misunderstood word. People have confused this word
to be synonymous with public domain or freeware software. In fact, shareware
is simply an effective marketing method by which to distribute computer
software. Think of shareware as being the ultimate in money back guarantees:
If you don't like a particular program, you don't have to pay for it. ##para
You do not have to pay to RECEIVE the software initially. Shareware authors
allow you to try the software for evaluation purposes before asking that you
pay a registration fee (actually purchase) their software. This gives you an
opportunity to evaluate the software in a pressure-free environment -- your
home or office!! Run the software - kick the tires. If you enjoy using
the software, you should then pay for it by "registering" your copy with
its author. ##para
The "share" in shareware comes from the author allowing you to make copies
of the shareware version and give it to others. The most common and highly
used method of doing this is to upload the shareware version of the software
to a local bulletin board service (BBS) or the internet. People from around
the world can then download (receive) the copy of the software for free and
give it a try, thus providing the service of distribution. Then, only if they
like the software will they actually have to pay for it, and so on, and so
on. ##para
##exact_text
NOTE: YOU SHOULD NEVER UPLOAD OR OTHERWISE DISTRIBUTE ANY COMMERCIAL,
RETAIL OR REGISTERED VERSIONS OF ANY SOFTWARE! IT IS ILLEGAL
AND CARRIES SOME STIFF PENALTIES -- NOT THE LEAST OF WHICH IS A SET
OF LARGE FINES, POSSIBLE IMPRISONMENT, AND INCREASING SOFTWARE PRICES
DUE TO THEFT.
DO YOURSELF AND THE WORLD A BIG, HUGE, IMPORTANT FAVOR: DON'T COPY
THAT FLOPPY UNLESS ITS LICENSE AGREEMENT SPECIFICALLY STATES THAT YOU
MAY DO SO!!
ALSO, COOPERATIVE PURCHASING, OR "CHIPPING IN," (MORE THAN ONE PARTY
CONTRIBUTING TO THE PURCHASE OF ONE COPY OF A GIVEN SOFTWARE PRODUCT)
IS ALSO ILLEGAL!
##end ##para
Shareware has grown in popularity and dependability. You can even find
shareware on retail shelves in its unregistered form, mostly on CD-ROMs
filled with hundreds of shareware programs. The cost of the CD at the store
is NOT the cost of the software -- if you like a particular program on the CD,
you should purchase the fully registered copy from its author. ##para
##exact_text
Question: So why is the cost of shareware usually lower than a retail version
of the same or similar software? Does that mean that it's not as
good or high quality?
Answer: By placing the software directly into your hands for
evaluation, the shareware author can avoid having to pay all
the necessary distribution fees associated with commercial
or retail software. Also, each "stop" the software makes
between the author and the retail shelf has to be paid for!!
There are delivery charges, profit markups, etc. Shareware
is not, in most cases, inferior software by comparison to
equivalent retail software. In fact, most shareware is actually
SUPERIOR to its retail competition -- it has to be, or you
wouldn't consider buying it!
##end ##para
Finally, Bölz! is marketed as shareware. The version you have received
(Zone 1) may be freely copied and distributed (with certain minor limitations.
Read VENDOR.DOC for more information). But, if you enjoy playing Bölz! and
plan to continue using it beyond 45 days, you must purchase a registered copy
from COGnition Development Team as outlined below. When you register, you will
receive the full version of Bölz! containing the rest of the Zones of Bölz!
(Zones 2, 3 and 4) and much, much more on one CD-ROM or seven diskettes. ##para
Please note that COGnition Development Team takes extreme pride in the fact
that this version of the game is not "crippled" in any way. You can save/load
your games, experience the wonderful soundtrack, and use/play all features of
Zone 1. This allows you to experience every aspect of Bölz! at home except
for the animation, but please encourage the development of more excellent,
family-oriented, easy-to-install games like Bölz! by registering! ##para
If you have already purchased a registered copy of Bölz!, thank you for
supporting the shareware marketing method! Your purchase will help to
guarantee that more quality shareware games like Bölz! will continue to be
produced!

Special Thanks to all of our "Real-World" Beta Testers. This game wouldn't
be what it is today if it weren't for your valuable input during those
critical stages of development!
-
Bolz! was developed and compiled using Watcom C version 10.0 "a-level"
patch. COGniton Development Team endorses the Watcom line of development
tools for 32-bit DOS and Windows development.

The Music in Bolz! was composed by Paradigm Recordings, PC division, using

Tracker can be downloaded from most bulletin board systems around the world,
and has quickly become a standard, high-quality computer music format.
