README.SHP 11/04/94
=================================================================
This README file lists information about the WordPerfect Shared
Applications for Windows that has not yet been documented in the
WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows User's Guide.
This README file contains the following topics:
1 Conversion Preferences
2 WordPerfect Characters in QuickFinder
3 QuickFinder File Indexer Performance
4 Using Spell Checker with WPWin 6.1 and WPWin 6.0
5 SmartHeap Memory Manager Copyright Notice
CONVERSION PREFERENCES
======================
The settings in the Conversion Preferences dialog box apply to
all word processor file formats with the exception of Ami Pro,
ASCII, and Navy DIF. The information under Convert Preferences
in the WPWin 6.1 User's Guide incorrectly states that these
settings affect WP 4.2, DCA, and DisplayWrite documents only. To
view the Conversion Preferences dialog box, choose Preferences
from the Edit menu, double-click Convert, then choose Document
from the Options pop-up list.
WORDPERFECT CHARACTERS IN QUICKFINDER
=====================================
QuickFinder supports the following WordPerfect characters:
Character Set Supported Character Numbers *
------------- ---------------------------
Cyrillic 10,0 through 10,99
Greek 8,0 through 8,69
Hebrew 9,0 through 9,26
Multinational 1,23 through 1,233
* Tables in this README file are formatted for display in the
setup program. Columns may be misaligned if you retrieve the
file into a text editor.
QUICKFINDER FILE INDEXER PERFORMANCE
====================================
To speed up the generation of large QuickFinder indexes, run
Windows in 386 Enhanced Mode with a swap file.
You may receive out of memory errors when attempting to generate
an index on a computer using EMM386.EXE to allocate expanded
memory. In order for QuickFinder to generate the index
correctly, you need to remove the line from your CONFIG.SYS file
that loads EMM386.EXE, or use EMM386.EXE with the NOEMS switch,
which disables the use of expanded memory. See your DOS manual
or Windows manual for information about editing your CONFIG.SYS
file and configuring EMM386.EXE.
USING SPELL CHECKER WITH WPWIN 6.1 AND WPWIN 6.0
================================================
Please note the following items if you have both WPWin 6.1 and
WPWin 6.0/6.0a installed on your computer, or if you exchange
documents between the two versions.
Supplementary Dictionaries
--------------------------
When you install WPWin 6.1, the setup program will make backup
copies of any supplementary dictionaries listed in the
Supplementary Dictionaries dialog box in the Spell Checker. The
setup program will also convert the original (6.0/6.0a)
supplementary dictionaries to the new 6.1 format. The backup
copies are indicated by the file extension ".!UP" instead of the
usual ".SUP" extension. Backup copies of version 6.0/6.0a
supplementary dictionaries will still be used with version
6.0/6.0a, and the new supplementary dictionaries will be used
only with version 6.1. Words you add to a supplementary
dictionary while spell-checking in either version of WPWin are
added only to the dictionary used by that version.
Document Dictionaries
---------------------
A document dictionary in a WPWin 6.0/6.0a document is converted
to 6.1 format the first time you spell-check the document in
WPWin 6.1. The version 6.0/6.0a document dictionary remains in
the document and will be used when the document is spell-checked
in WPWin 6.0/6.0a. The 6.1 version of the document dictionary is
used only by the version 6.1 Spell Checker. Words you add to a
document dictionary while spell-checking in either version of
WPWin are added only to the dictionary used by that version.
Note to System Administrators About the .BIF File
-------------------------------------------------
When you edit the .BIF file, you can distinguish the version
6.0/6.0a Speller settings from the version 6.1 Spell Checker
settings by the Item name in the US (or other language) section
of the WPSpeller group as follows:
Item name Version *
------------------------------------------ --------
Supplementary Dictionaries Chain 6.1
Main Dictionaries Chain 6.1
Supplementary Dictionaries in Search Order 6.0/6.0a
Main Dictionaries in Search Order 6.0/6.0a
* Tables in this README file are formatted for display in the
setup program. Columns may be misaligned if you retrieve the
file into a text editor.
