  26. WHAT ARE .DAT FILES?
  27.  
  28. DAT files contain up-to-date virus signatures and other
  29. information that Network Associates anti-virus products use
  30. to protect your computer against the thousands of computer
  31. viruses in circulation. New .DAT files are released each
  32. month to provide protection against the 100 to 300 new
  33. viruses that are discovered each month. To ensure that you
  34. are protected against the latest virus threats, download and
  35. install the latest .DAT files every month.

  42. The 3103 .DAT files are compatible with Network Associates
  43. and McAfee anti-virus products that use v3.x or later scan
  44. engines only. For optimal detection, Network Associates
  45. recommends that these .DAT files be used with v3.1.7 or
  46. later scan engines. These .DAT files are not intended for
  47. use with McAfee v2.x scan engines.

  418. ActiveX controls when used with Network Associates
  419. anti-virus products that use INTERNET.DAT:

  427. KNOWN ISSUES
  428.  
  429. 1.  Due to the size of Virus List, it is too large to load
  430.     into memory under the following circumstances: when
  431.     using these .DAT files with McAfee VirusScan v3.x for
  432.     Windows 3.1x after a virus is detected and cleaned,
  433.     viewing the Virus List more than once may cause your
  434.     system to run out of memory.
  435.  
  436. 2.  An invalid page fault may occur on some systems when
  437.     the 3103 .DAT files are used with McAfee VirusScan for
  438.     Windows 95 v3.0.0. If you encounter this problem,
  439.     Network Associates recommends that you upgrade to the
  440.     current version of McAfee VirusScan for Windows 9x by
  441.     contacting Network Associates sales or connecting to
  442.     the Network Associates website. Contact information
  443.     appears at the end of this document.

  446. INSTALLATION
  447.  
  448. * INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
  449.    
  450. DAT file updates are stored in a compressed format to reduce
  451. transmission time. To install your update, create a
  452. temporary directory and copy the downloaded file to the
  453. directory. Unzip the files, then copy them to the
  454. appropriate permanent directories, replacing your existing
  455. files.

  470. * TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
  471.  
  472. The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort
  473. by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to come up with
  474. one standard by which customers can verify their anti-virus
  475. installations. To test your installation, copy the following
  476. line into its own file and name it EICAR.COM.
  477.  
  478. X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
  479.  
  480. When done, you will have a 69- or 70-byte file.
  481.  
  482. When McAfee VirusScan is applied to this file, Scan will
  483. report finding the EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
  484.  
  485. It is important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS. However,
  486. users often have the need to test that their installations
  487. function correctly. The anti-virus industry, through the
  488. European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, has
  489. adopted this standard to facilitate this need.
  490.  
  491. Please delete the file when installation testing is
  492. completed so unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily
  493. alarmed.

  498. Macro viruses are named using this standard:
  499.  
  500. The first of a family is given "name.A". For each
  501. subsequently discovered variant, the suffix letters progress
  502. until .Z is reached. The next is given .AA until .AZ is
  503. reached. The next is given .BA, etc. until .ZZ is reached.
  504. The next would then be given .AAA and so on.
  505.  
  506. A macro virus name given without a variant notation means a 
  507. non-specific variant is being referenced.
