  2.          Bug Fixes, Enhancements, Known Restrictions and Problems in 
  3.                  InspectorPC / FileRecovery
  4. =============================================================================

  6. "FileRecovery", consists of the FileRecovery module(Disk 1), FR.EXE, and the 
  7. ReNew/ReFresh modules(Disk 2), RENEW.EXE and REFRESH.EXE.  ReNew supports
  8. restoring both compressed and uncompressed InspectorPC backup files including 
  9. files with Long File Names even if the backup saveset is fragmented. ReFresh 
  10. (Disk 2) is designed to restore all files containing Long File Names which
  11. have been recovered under a Maintain Directories or Flat File recovery mode.
  12.  
  13. A disk shredder module (FileShredder) is available upon request but as a 
  14. separate product.  It provides a triple flux reversal process thereby making 
  15. a disk unrecoverable, even by FileRecovery. 
  16.  
  17. The primary areas of strengthening and enhancements introduced in V1.04 are
  18. large capacity drive support (>2.1GB), multiple partition support and 
  19. enhanced floppy diskette recoveries in the FileRecovery module.  The major 
  20. enhancement to the ReNew module involves the ability to recognize 
  21. fragmented backups.  This situation is a result of a user removing the 
  22. initial diskette before it has been completely filled to select additional 
  23. files for recovery to new diskettes under the same backup saveset name.
  24.  
  25. Bug fixes, enhancements, restrictions and known problems will be listed here
  26. by module and bug report number.  Development generated fixes and 
  27. enhancements are reflected as such and will not indicate a bug report number
  28. in order to differentiate between those fixes and enhancements requested by
  29. FileRecovery customers and the development team.

  47. 1)    21094        2    The problem displayed by the program halting
  48.                 with a memory error avail loop message has
  49.                 been corrected by the fix implemented for a
  50.                 potential memory allocation conflict.
  51.     
  52. 2)    21898        4    When a bad diskette has been inserted and 
  53.                 selected as the Source Drive, receive the
  54.                 "Insert Diskette" message even when the
  55.                 diskette is already inserted.  The user
  56.                 now has the capability to hit the <enter>
  57.                 key for a popup menu will ask them if they
  58.                 wish to accept this disk anyway.

  60. 3)    23848        3    The problem with previously selected title 
  61.                 boxes not clearing but remaining in the 
  62.                 background on the screen with the newly 
  63.                 selected title box appearing over it has 
  64.                 been corrected.

  66. 4)    28753        4    The <Esc> key functionality now works
  67.                 within the recovery type selection process.
  68.                 After having chosen a compressed backup as
  69.                 the recovery type and upon entering the
  70.                 saveset name field hitting the <Esc> key
  71.                 will now take you back to the Activity Menu
  72.                 and allow you to choose another recovery 
  73.                 type if you so choose.

  75. 5)    6685        1    The isolated problem with the program halting
  76.                 approximately 1/3 of the way through the
  77.                 recovery process and aborting to return to 
  78.                 the DOS prompt with the following error 
  79.                 messages; DOS/4G (2001) exceptionEH
  80.                 (page fault) error and the crash address of 
  81.                 CS:IP1A0:00498C86 has been corrected.

  84.                 capacity indicating available space will
  85.                 occassionally add an 'M' to the 'KB'
  86.                 starting with the second diskette with a 
  87.                 large capacity remaining indicated 
  88.                 (example, 496485)has now been detected, 
  89.                 isolated, and corrected.

  91. 7)    Development Generated    The Destination Partition Selection window 
  92.     No Bug Report Number    for disks with multiple partitions has been 
  93.                 moved to display before the Execute Disk

  215.     No Bug Report Number    a recovery from the Windows 95 shell.  You 
  216.                 will receive the following message, "Sorry,
  217.                 this program can not be run under the 
  218.                 Windows 95 shell."  You must then enter 
  219.                 'Start; Shut Down; Restart the Computer from 
  220.                 the task bar portion at the bottom of your 
  221.                 Windows 95 screen with your FileRecovery Disk 
  222.                 1 inserted in the appropriate drive.  At the 
  223.                 DOS command line enter> A:\FR to start the 
  224.                 FileRecovery program where A: represents the 
  225.                 drive where Disk 1 has been inserted.

  227. 2)    Development Generated    FileRecovery does not support the low level
  228.     No Bug Report Number    SCSI controller cards that do not have the
  229.                 on-board BIOS support (examples: ZipZoom card,
  230.                 and the Adaptec 1505, 1510, 1515 cards and

  262. 1)    11314        3    Disk Analysis reporting Missing Address Marks
  263.                 resulting in Fatal Memory Error (M113) after 
  264.                 only 3,160 bad sectors.  Drive appears to 
  265.                 be suffering extensive physical damage as
  266.                 each subsequent execution of the program
  267.                 results in less bad sectors being reflected
  268.                 before program is locking up with Fatal 
  269.                 Memory error even though available memory
  270.                 is sufficient.  
  271.  
  272. 2)    12914        3    When responding to the message a previous
  273.                 backup exists on the destination drive chosen
  274.                 and then reselecting the same destination 
  275.                 drive the program proceeds as if the files
  276.                 had been written to the re-selected drive
  277.                 yet the files have not been written to that
  278.                 drive.
  279.  
  280. 3)    1773        2    On a WinbookXP Laptop with a Toshiba 540MB
  281.                 hard drive as the source drive the following
  282.                 phenomena has been witnessed.  The program
  283.                 will complete one successful recovery attempt
  284.                 but additional recovery attempts will result
  285.                 in the program not initializing.  Workaround
  286.                 is to copy a new fr.exe over the existing
  287.                 one that has become corrupted preventing the
  288.                 program from initializing.
  289.  
  290. 4)    23471        3    The new call, INT 21, 7303h introduced in 
  291.                 the Windows release (SR 2) for large drives
  292.                 is not now supported by FileRecovery which 
  293.                 displays the correct partition size for 
  294.                 drives over 2.1GB.
  295.  
  296. 5)    24206        3    There is currently a problem with the graph
  297.                 display reflecting the recovery progress
  298.                 status on the larger disk size (3.1GB).  The
  299.                 graph will jump to approximately the 3/4 
  300.                 mark on the graph immediately but then will
  301.                 not display the recovery is complete by
  302.                 completely filling the graph.
  303.  
  304. 6)    24786        3    On some 1.6GB drives it has been noticed that
  305.                 the field reflecting capacity required is 
  306.                 increasing rather than decreasing during the 
  307.                 recovery phase.

  309. 7)    25232        3    It has been noticed that on certain drives
  310.                 a read request is issued for a cylinder 
  311.                 beyond the total number of cylinders on the
  312.                 disk which will result in an audible read
  313.                 attempt on the cylinder it is requesting
  314.                 (example; a read request for C766 on a drive
  315.                 with only 760 cylinders)
  316.         
  317. 8)    25652        4    Change the F2 call for a Select All Files
  318.                 action within the File Selection phase to
  319.                 ignore junk directories, or any files that 
  320.                 have no chance of recovery.
  321.  
  322. 9)    27065        3    It has been noted that pressing the space
  323.                 bar next to the <Partition's Root Directory>
  324.                 will display a total size of selected files
  325.                 that is different than the one displayed when
  326.                 selecting files by pressing the F2 function
  327.                 key.

  329. 10)    29324        4    Change the method by which FileRecovery 
  330.                 appends files to the end of the compressed
  331.                 or uncompressed backups-currently using the
  332.                 DOS methodology-slows down the recovery
  333.                 process when files are large and numerous.

  336.                 destination drive for recovery from a bad 
  337.                 identifiably bad source drive the ASPI
  338.                 drivers will assign a drive letter of C:
  339.                 due to corruption on hard drive resulting
  340.                 in some confusion with the correct drive 
  341.                 letters being assigned by FileRecovery.  The
  342.                 workaround is to make your known bad hard
  343.                 drive your slave drive and a known good
  344.                 hard drive the master (if at all possible) 
  345.                 and the drive letter will then be reflected
  346.                 correctly by FileRecovery.

  348. 12)    6972        3    While in Cluster Navigator, Manual Recovery
  349.                 Mode under the Expert Experience level the
  350.                 <Delete> and <End> keys referenced in the
  351.                 Select Activity Menu responding to the <Esc>
  352.                 key are not functioning.  Workaround:  Use
  353.                 the hot keys (l) for Delete and (n) for End
  354.                 which are functioning correctly.

  356. 13)    7155        4    When quitting the program from Cluster 
  357.                 Navigator under the Manual Recovery mode in
  358.                 Expert experience level the credits window is
  359.                 not consistent with the one being displayed
  360.                 after quitting at the end of the program.  
  361.                 The window is shrunk together and not
  362.                 centered.

  378.                 message should pop up requesting the user to
  379.                 insert a diskette for restoring those files

  381.                 write to the ReNew disk if the user is not 
  382.                 careful.

  384. 2)    6857        3    Warning:  When choosing a floppy diskette to
  385.                 restore your recovered files to there is no
  386.                 window that will pop up requesting you to
  387.                 insert a diskette to restore the selected 
  388.                 files.  Workaround:  The user must make sure

  390.                 a: drive as the destination and before the

  402. 1)            2    Problem has been identified after completing
  403.                 more than half of the recovery phase where 
  404.                 the program will halt and return the user to
  405.                 the DOS command level.  Upon reinitializing 
  406.                 the program the User registration slots and 
  407.                 Disk registration slots have been filled with
  408.                 what appears to be random, garbage characters
  409.                 preventing the user from performing any
  410.                 additional drive recoveries even though there
  411.                 should be drive slots remaining.  (Workaround:
  412.                 until the problem can be isolated to specific
  413.                 circumstances, remove the Service Pak disk
  414.                 1 after the program is well into the Execute
  415.                 Disk Analysis phase to eliminate potential
  416.                 corruption of remaining user and drive slots)
  417.                 NOTE: the problem has only been duplicated 
  418.                 once in development and was as a result of a
  419.                 random action, very isolated occurrence.  
  420.                 Verification of problem has been elusive.
  421.  
  422. 2)            2    Problem has been identified with copying over
  423.                 the FRSP.EXE executable on a previous disk 1
  424.                 only to find that the Master password has
  425.                 been corrupted and is no longer recognized.
  426.                 (Workaround: must ftp the special service-pak
  427.                 version that will unlock the password and 
  428.                 allow the user to reset the password, then the
  429.                 user can copy over the most recent version of
  430.                 the service pak and continue).

  470.                 types of files in the file selection phase
  471.                 of the program, such a *.doc, *.dbs, *.xls,

  476.                 diskette that is not completely full in

  487.                 to use ClusterNavigator unless absolutely

  489.                 ability to piece together clusters of the
  490.                 same file type during selection.

  493.                 for specific files by entering file names,
  494.                 add an audible that indicates the next

  497.                 currently the user is left wondering.

  500.                 identification of partially selected files in
  501.                 a directory versus the entire directory

  506.                 directory had been previously selected.

  578.                 cluster), and RS(reserved sectors) values 
  579.                 which will allow FileRecovery to locate files
  580.                 even when the BIOS has erroneous critical
  581.                 values.
