It is crucial to keep the Domino server secure. To prevent unauthorized users from accessing sensitive information on the server, keep the Domino server in a locked room or in a location where you can watch it, and use the Set Secure command to assign the server a password to prevent unauthorized changes while the server is running.
To set the password, enter the following server command at the console:

To exit the server, you must enter the password when using the Exit or Quit command. While the Set Secure command is in effect, you cannot use the
Load, Set Config, and Tell commands, and you cannot use the Notes workstation program on the server machine.
To remove the password, type

The Lotus Domino server for NetWare is designed for use in the Novell operating system environment. The Domino server for NetWare is loaded in the memory of a running Novell server from several NetWare Loadable Modules. You can monitor and control some Domino server operations, such as console commands, directly at the NetWare file server. However, you must perform some operations from the remote Domino administration program located on the Notes workstation.t
The Domino server for NetWare differs from the Domino server for other operating systems in that:v

About the Domino server Install programe
The Lotus Domino 4.6 NetWare server uses a Windows 95 or Windows NT (Intel) platform to install the NetWare server software. The Install program includes a 32-bit Windows client, which is automatically installed. Previous releases used a 16-bit Windows client to install the server and required that you install the client software separately.b
The Domino Install program accomplishes three tasks. It copies and decompresses the Domino program and data files into specified directories, updates the operating system configuration file (WIN.INI), and creates two default Domino configuration files (NOTES.INI) for the server program and for the Notes administration client program.
With the Lotus Domino Advanced Services license for NetWare, you gain two primary server enhancements: Domino server clusters and billing features. A Domino cluster is a group of up to six Domino servers in the same domain connected by a local area network. The Domino billing feature enables a Domino server to track system usage. The Domino billing server task collects this information and records the data for billing processes. For more information on Advanced Services, see Chapters 9 and 11 of

You must complete both the Install program and the server Setup program before you can use the Domino server.
Alternatives to installing from CD-ROM
Lotus ships the Domino Release 4.6 files on CD-ROM. However, you can set up installation alternatives for users without a CD-ROM drive. You can
Create a set of install disks by copying the contents of the DISK_KIT directories onto disks.
Create a distribution area on a file server so users can run the Install program across a network.

contains files that identify you and how you installed Notes on your computer. You must select this feature to run a Domino server.

contains files that let you use modems with the Notes workstation and Domino server.

Attachment Viewer
offers filters for viewing attached files, such as spreadsheets and word processing documents, when the associated application is not installed on the local system.
Java support files
contains files that enable the Notes Web Navigator to run Java applets.
Java InternationalizationB
contains files for Java applets or Java Agents that use the internationalization support provided in Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.1. Selecting this option installs the Java classes that support the JDK 1.1 "locale" mechanism.
Advanced Services tab
Advanced Services
contains the program files necessary for installing Domino server clusters, which connect up to six Domino servers together for maximum availability, and billing features, which track and record system usage.
Advanced Services Data
contains the data files necessary for clusters and billing. Select this option if you purchased the Lotus Domino Advanced Services license and want to install clusters and billing for your Domino NetWare server.
About installing Novell NetWare Support files
Before you install the Domino for NetWare server, you must install the most recent Novell support files for your specific release of NetWare. Make sure you have the most updated support files from Novell. For NetWare 4.1, you need to install the 410PT2.EXE and LIBUP5.EXE files. For NetWare 3.12, you need the 312PT6.EXE and LIBUP5.EXE files. For more information, see the "Things You Need to Know" section of the Domino Release Notes (READMES.NSF).e

You can run the Install program either directly from the CD-ROM or from a distribution area. You can create a distribution area by using the copydist utility, which copies the Domino software for all four UNIX platforms to a hard disk. You can then run the Install program from that location. About installing Domino to a single host
To install Domino to a single host, you must specify a destination host hostname. The specified destination host does not need to be the same host or operating system running the Install program.R
About installing Domino to multiple hosts
To install Domino to multiple hosts, you must specify the name of each destination host in a hostlist file. A hostlist file is an ASCII file listing the destination hostnames, one host on each line. You can create this list before you start the Install program, or you can create or edit the list during the Install program.
You do not have to install the software to the computer on which you are running the Install program; however, we do recommend that you run the Domino software on the destination host(s) instead of making the software available as a network resource.
Configuration settings
When you install Domino on multiple hosts, Domino uses the same configuration settings for each destination host. The settings include the following:,
The destination path of the Domino files.
By default, Domino installs the software to the /opt/lotus/ destination. If you install to a different directory, the Install program creates a symbolic link from /opt/lotus/ to the install directory that you specify. The final directory name of the path must be "lotus"; if you do not include it in the path, the Install program adds "lotus" to the path.
The Install program will also install support for VIM applications in the form of a symbolic link in the directory /opt/vim/lib. If this directory does not exist, Domino creates it.t

Make sure that the file system containing the destination path is local to the hosts that will run the Domino server.

The Lotus Domino Mail server lets you run messaging for your organization with Domino. The Lotus Domino server includes the full messaging functionality of the Domino Mail server and adds application development capabilities.d
You must acquire one copy of the Software for each server on which the software will be installed. A server is defined as a central processing unit (CPU), or group of CPUs, that accesses its or their own individual non-cache Random Access Memory (RAM).
The Domino Server for Single Processor may only be used on a server with one CPU. The Lotus Domino Mail Server for Single Processor license entitles you to host only those predefined templates which are installed with the Domino Mail Server (including chat, discussion, calendaring and scheduling, and messaging applications). The Lotus Domino Server for Single Processor entitles you to host all applications included with the Domino Server, as well as any custom or third-party applications which are available to you. The Domino Server for Multi-Processor may be used on any server. You may use the client features of the Lotus Domino Server to perform installation and administrative tasks; if you want to customize or create applications you must acquire a copy of the Lotus Notes Client software.
If you wish to use a Domino Server product on a server with multiple CPUs, you must purchase the Domino Server for Single Processor and Domino SMP Services. You must first acquire a copy of either Domino Server or Domino Mail Server in order to run Domino SMP Services.
You can use the Lotus Domino Advanced Services license with either a single processor or a multiprocessor computer. With the Lotus Domino Advanced Services license, you gain three primary server enhancements: clustering, the ability to connect several servers together to provide maximum accessibility and synchronization; partitioned servers, enabling one computer to host up to six servers; and billing, capabilities for tracking and storing information about system usage. You must first acquire a copy of the Domino server for Single Processor, the Domino server for MultiProcessor, the Domino Mail server for Single Processor, or Domino Mail server for MultiProcessor to run Domino Advanced Services. You must acquire a Domino Advanced Services license for each server on which you wish to run the software.

For the Lotus Notes Designer for Domino license, you must acquire one copy of the software for each application developer. In addition to using the software to design, develop and test your software application products, you may also use the software as your Lotus Notes client. The software also gives you the right to use Lotus Bean Machine (according to the terms set forth above under Domino server license types) and Lotus Notes Global Designer.
The Lotus Domino Mail Access license allows customers using non-Notes mail clients to access Domino 4.6 servers for mail. You must first acquire a copy of either Domino Server or Domino Mail Server in order to use Domino Mail Access. You must pay an access fee for each user who accesses a unique mail file on your server. You are not required to pay an access fee for (i) users who access the mail file with a Lotus e-mail client, or (ii) users who access non-mail databases or the replica of an already paid for mail file. The purchase of any Notes client includes the Domino Mail Access license.m
The Notes client licenses differ from each other in one or both of the following ways:

The extent to which you may modify the design of a database and perform administrative tasks.o

is a collection of data. Many of the databases that come with Notes are documentation databases; that is, databases that contain information on using Notes.
database template
is a skeleton database design that doesn't contain any data. You create a database by copying the database template and then adding data to the copy. For example, you can copy the Discussion database template and then add to the copy the information you want to discuss -- for example, brainstorming ideas for a new product.c
Design features
are features that let you modify the design of a database. For example, the design features let you change the appearance and structure of all the documents in a database.

are features that allow you to perform administrative tasks such as registering new Notes users.i

After you successfully install Domino, you must complete the Setup program. For Domino partitioned servers, you must run the Setup program once for each partitioned server. During the Setup program, Domino copies the server files into the Domino data directory and creates the default Domino configuration file (notes.ini). We recommend that the server data directory be local to the host that
will run the Domino server. This provides maximum performance and reduces network dependencies.
Domino lets you choose which components you want to install locally on your server. The Setup program configures your data directory according to the features you choose. R
The Setup program automatically starts the first time you type the command /opt/lotus/bin/notes. If you need to rerun Setup, you can do so by typing
/opt/lotus/bin/notes -uX

contains files that identify how you installed Notes on your computer. By default, the Setup program selects this feature for you. q

contains the files needed to run multiple Domino servers on one computer. If you select this option, the Setup program automatically selects the Advanced Services Data Files, Domino Server Data Files, and Notes Workstation Data Files options.

contains the files necessary for clusters, and billing. If you select this feature, the Setup program automatically selects the server, workstation, and user data files.p
Domino Server Data Files p
contains the program, data, and template files needed to run a Domino server. Domino servers provide services to Notes workstation users and other Domino servers, including storing shared databases, replicating databases, and routing mail. You must select this feature to run a Domino server.
Notes Workstation Data Files l
contains the program, data, and template files needed to run a Notes workstation. If you are installing a Domino server, the Setup program automatically installs the workstation data files.
Help
Lite Database
is a database that provides context-sensitive information about most Notes features. Although Help Lite is a subset of the Help database, Lotus recommends you install this feature so workstation users can access this database. This database is highly recommended for anyone using Notes remotely. m
Help Database
provides context-sensitive information about most Notes end-user features, as well as documentation on managing databases, creating applications, and using LotusScript. Lotus recommends you install this feature so workstation users can access this database.

Server setup terms
To understand more about the Setup program, familiarize yourself with the following Domino terms:
Domino server ID
Each Domino server has a unique name that is maintained in its own ID file. Domino creates the server ID automatically during the server Setup program.
Notes user IDe
Each Notes user has a unique name that is maintained in its own ID file. Domino creates the user ID automatically when the you register new users.
Certifier ID
Each grouping of Domino servers, known as a domain, has an Certifier ID that is stored in a file named cert.id. This certifier automatically certifies the first server's ID and the administrator's ID. When you register new users or servers, you use the certifier ID to give access to the domain. You also use the certifier ID when you create organizational unit certifiers for a hierarchical name scheme.
Domino creates the organization certifier ID automatically during the first server Setup program using the certifier name you specify and an optional country code. You can only add a country code if your country's clearing house for X.500 names has approved your organization name. Doing this minimizes the chance that another organization has the same organization name as yours. A multinational organization requires only one certifier ID, even if a country code is specified; it's not necessary to have separate certifier IDs for each country in which Domino is deployed.
Public Address Booki
Each domain has a Public Address Book. The Public Address Book contains a Server document for each server and a Person document for each user. In addition, you can create Group documents to establish relationships among servers and users for mailing and security purposes, and create Connection documents to schedule replication and mail routing among servers. e
When naming users, servers, or certifiers for the Public Address Book, you should not use the characters / (forward slash), \ (backslash), , (comma), or @ (at sign). Lotus recommends you use a password to protect the private encryption keys stored in the ID files. Passwords are case sensitive and can consist of any combination of keyboard characters. The first character of the password must be an alphanumeric character. Lotus recommends using a password of at least 13 characters. A phrase is more secure than a password, and may be easier to remember.

Follow these steps before you install Domino.
1. Make sure that the required hardware and software components are in place and working.
2. Temporarily disable any screen savers and turn off any virus-detection software.
3. Make sure that all other applications are closed. Otherwise, you may corrupt any shared files and the Install program may not run properly.
4. Read the Domino Release Notes for any last-minute changes or additions to the documentation.

Follow these steps before you install Domino.s
1. Read the Domino Release Notes for any last-minute changes or additions to the documentation.
2. Make sure that the required hardware and software components are in place and working.c
3. Use the "df" command to make sure that enough space is available for /opt, the default installation directory, and for

/notesr4, the destination for the Domino data files, where

specifies the location of the user's home directory. For example, you could use the following syntax:a

For Domino partitioned servers, make sure that there is enough space available for each partitioned server's data directory.
4. For each system receiving Domino, make sure that a UNIX user account and a UNIX group account are set up for ownership of Domino software. We recommend that you set up a user ID account named

and a group ID account named

. For this purpose, make sure that these IDs are available on each target host by an appropriate method (NIS, per host, or otherwise) for your site. Note that these software accounts do not need a home directory.
5. For each system that runs the Domino server software, create a UNIX administrative account for running the Domino server processes. This account should be local to the system, for both security and performance reasons. Use a unique name, such as

, to differentiate this account from the software account. The group for this account should be

6. Determine the device name for the CD drive or the location of the file server from which you are installing Domino.
7. Make sure that the system running the Install program has root equivalent access on each remote target host using /.rhosts, /etc/hosts.equiv, or some other appropriate method.
8. Make sure that non-interactive shells on all destination hosts do not yield any errors or extraneous text. For example, for remote hosts h

6. If you are upgrading to Domino, a message appears indicating that there is already a copy of Notes installed on your hard disk. Click Next.

7. Select Customize features - Manual install to install the additional Domino partitioned servers.
8. Enter the drive and directory where you want this server's Domino data files to reside. (When installing additional Domino partitioned servers, the program directory field does not appear because all Domino partitioned servers share the same program files.) +
By default, the Install program lists the data directory as the name of the first server with the numeral "2" at the end of the file name. For example, if you installed the data files for the first partitioned server in the directory named C:\NOTES\RED, the default data directory name for the second partitioned server is C:\NOTES\RED2. Lotus recommends that you use the name of the second partitioned server to name its data directory. For example, if your second partitioned server is named Blue, you would enter C:\NOTES\BLUE as the directory for the server data files. You should follow the same procedure for each additional Domino partitioned server you install.A
9. Click Next. By default, both the Notes and Advanced Services tabs have the appropriate features selected for an additional Domino partitioned server install. Don
not
select or deselect any of the features. You do not need to select the Advanced Services option for an additional partitioned server install.v

If you do not install the default features for an additional Domino partitioned server, your partitioned server configuration will not be supported.
10. Click Yes to indicate you have purchased the Lotus Domino Advanced Services license and agree to the terms. Then click Next.m
11. Select the program folder for the Notes icon and the Domino Server icon, or type a name to create a new one. The default is Lotus Applications. Click Next.

For example, if your partitioned server is named Red, you would enter C:\NOTES\RED as the directory for the server data files.
Caution e
You should not use more than eight characters for the Domino program directory name or the Domino data directory name. Longer directory names may not map properly, causing the Domino preferences file, NOTES.INI, to be unable to locate the directory.
11. If you chose Customize features - Manual install, do the following:
Select the features on the Notes tab that you want to install. At minimum you must select the Lotus Domino Server and Personal Data Files options to run a Domino server.
Note
You must be a local Windows NT administrator to install the Single Password Logon or User synchronization features, because you need administrator privileges to create Windows NT Services and Registry entries.
Caution o
If you install Single Password Logon, your level of Domino security is determined by the security of the Windows NT system.
If you purchased the Domino Advanced Services license, click the Advanced Services tab to select the Advanced Services you want to install. Select Advanced Services and Advanced Services Data to install the files for Domino server clusters and billing features. Select Domino Partitioned Server, Advanced Services, and Advanced Services Data to install the first Domino partitioned server on Windows NT.
Note
Domino partitioned servers are supported only on Windows NT Intel and Windows NT Alpha.
If you chose to install Advanced Services or Domino Partitioned Server, click Yes if you have purchased the Lotus Domino Advanced Services license and agree to the terms. Otherwise, click No and deselect the Advanced Services features. Click Next.
12. Select the program folder for the Notes icon and the Domino Server icon, or type a name to create a new one. The default is Lotus Applications. You can click New Folder and type a name for the new folder. Click Next.

The CD-ROM for Lotus Domino is in the ISO-9660 format.
1. Log into your UNIX system as root.
2. Insert the Lotus Domino for UNIX CD-ROM and then use the following syntax to mount the CD-ROM. In each path
cd_mount_point
is the chosen mount point of the CD-ROM filesystem, and
device_name
is the name for the CD-ROM drive.
For HP-UX:
/usr/

You may need to remove the Domino server software from a computer -- for example, when a user leaves the company or a computer is designated for another purpose. The quickest way to do this is to use the Uninstall program.
Note
The Uninstall program does not remove any files from the Windows directory (such as NOTES.INI); you must remove these files manually. The Uninstall program also does not delete items in the Windows Registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

4. Enter the path where you want the Domino server data files to reside. The Setup program installs the notes.ini file in this directory. By default, the Domino server data files are installed in

specifies the user's home directory.

If you are installing Domino partitioned servers, each partitioned server needs its own Domino data directory. Lotus recommends that you use the name of the partitioned server to name its data directory. For example, if your partitioned server is named Red, you enter

7. Select the network protocol the machine uses in the Network type box. If the network is already installed and set up, the network protocol automatically appears in the Network type field.
8. If the server uses a modem, do the following to set up a serial port:
Select a port in the Serial port box, and select the type of modem it uses in the Modem type box.
(Optional) To change the default settings for the modem port, click Setup. Change the settings. To specify an acquire script, click Acquire Script. Select a script and edit it if necessary, and then click OK. Click OK when you are finished specifying the modem settings.
9. (Optional) If the server uses a modem, click Script to select a connect script. Select a script and edit if necessary. Then click OK.
10. (Optional) Click Advanced Options.o
Enter a Domain name for the server's domain and a Network name for its Domino named network.
Enter the Organization country code for your organization.
Select whether to log all replication events, log all client session events, create an organization certifier ID, a server ID, or an administrator's ID.
Enter the minimum password length for the administrator's ID and certifier IDs.

11. Click OK to exit first server setup.A

The database lists server tasks that are automatically installed on the Domino server in the Standard Services section. You cannot modify this section because these tasks are essential for the server to function.
1. Select who can access the server.
If you want Web browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator to access data on the server, select HTTP to install the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server task.
If you want Internet mail clients using Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) to access mail on the server, select POP3 to install the POP3 server task.
If you want Internet mail clients using Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) to access mail on the server, select IMAP to install the IMAP server task.
If you want Internet directory clients using Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to access directory information on the server, select LDAP to install the LDAP server task.
If you want Internet mail clients to be able to send and receive mail on the server using Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), select SMTP MTA to install the SMTP/MIME Message Transfer Agent on the server.
If you want Internet news readers using Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) to access news groups and discussions on the server, select NNTP.

- If you use an HTTP proxy and want to use Notes protocols, such as replication, on the Internet, enter the port and domain name or IP address for the HTTP server in the Notes RPC field. This lets servers in your organizations communicate with other Domino servers over the Internet. Your HTTP proxy must support the HTTP Connect method for this option to work.o
- If you use a proxy for the Internet and do not want to connect to addresses on your local area network through the proxy, enter these addresses in the "No proxy for these hosts or domains" field. This field sets access for all proxy servers. You can enter domain names or IP addresses and may use wild cards; for example, *.acme.com is an acceptable entry.
6. In the Communications Port Options section, do any of the following:o

You must start the Domino server so users can access shared databases and obtain other server services. Do not enter keystrokes or click the mouse while the Domino server is starting or shutting down.
Note
If the server program is running,
do not use CTRL+S
to stop scrolling the console, because no
server services will take place until you press a key to continue.
To start the server, type
load notessrv
at the NetWare file server prompt.
To shut down the Domino server, type exit or quit and press ENTER. It may take 10 seconds or more for the server to shut down.

Starting the server from a UNIX window
Start the Domino server so users can access shared databases or obtain other server services. From a UNIX window, start the Domino server by typing
/opt/lotus/bin/server
in the Domino data directory. For example:
#cd
<directory>
/notesr4
#/opt/lotus/bin/server
where
<directory>
specifies the location of the user's home directory.
Note
For Domino partitioned servers, start each partitioned server in its corresponding Domino data directory.
Starting the server from the Setup database
You can start the Domino server from the Server Setup database (SETUP.NSF) on the server desktop. To start the server, open the database and click Launch Domino Server.
Shutting down the server
To shut down the Domino server, type exit or quit and press ENTER. It may take 10 seconds or more for the server to shut down.
