TopTune
The instrument editor for AdLib and compatibles
A K.ids G.et B.its! Production
Version 1.92
First Release
(C) 1992 by K.G.B., Wild West Germany
Concept & coding & documentation by VAN BETHOVEN
With special thanks to RAMses for help in various cases
About TopTune:
──────────────
TopTune was designed for use with Visual Composer from AdLib
Inc. I don't know any other similar composing software for
the AdLib soundcard so I can't tell you whether TopTune will
help you when not using Visual Composer. If you know Visual
Composer but use some other software you consider to be
better, then please contact me (VAN BETHOVEN, member of
K.ids G.et B.its! and programmer of TopTune - address some
lines below).
It took quite a while to make TopTune look like that what you
can see now. AdLib's Programmer's Manual is extremely bad and
incomplete. Although TopTune was mainly coded by me, the
technical know-how of AdLib programming is an accomplishment
of the whole K.G.B. crew.
TopTune is freeware. If you have problems with TopTune or if
you want us to implement some enhancements and release a new
version or FOR ANY OTHER REASON, feel free to contact us
whenever you want.

software. Use TopTune at your own risk (as we do) !
Short introduction
In general:
TopTune provides a super-modern and highly convenient
pseudo-GUI (why "pseudo"? Freaks knowing the abbreviation
GUI should know !). You will get most satisfaction by using
a mouse. Originally, I programmed TopTune for my own needs,
that's one reason why there's no OnLine-Help option (the
other one is that I am a bit lazy). But I can assure you
won't need OnLine-Help. If you know AdLib's Instrument Maker
you will easily get used to TopTune - and as TopTune is
superior you'll soon appreciate its enhancements. If you
don't know AdLib's Instrument Maker, read the following
paragraphs. Even Power-Users will find valuable information
about TopTune's special features - at least they should read
the Miscellaneous part.

HOW TO USE TopTune
The operators:
──────────────
Modify or create an instrument by changing the values of the
carrier and the modulator (the operators). Using a keyboard
you can switch between Carrier and Modulator by pressing the
TAB key. Press the Up or Down arrow to select the parameter
you want to change. Increase the value of the selected
parameter by pressing the right arrow or decrease it by
pressing the left one. Flags can be toggled with the
spacebar or the ENTER key. One special parameter called
Output Level can be adjusted by pressing the + or - key (have
a guess which key will do what). Mouse users simply click on
the arrows, the + or - symbol. I think it's so easy that it
doesn't need any further explanation. Clicking with the
right mouse button forces TopTune to execute most options
with double-speed.
Windows and options:
────────────────────
Open a window by pressing ESC or by clicking on its name.
Close a window by pressing ESC again or by clicking outside
the window. Press the up or down key to select an option and
confirm with ENTER.
FILE options:
─────────────
NEW loads the default instrument of the selected type.
RESTORE restores the instrument loaded. Use RESTORE to undo
everything you changed on the instrument.
LOAD loads an instrument of the selected type from a
bankfile. Use the arrow keys, PageUp, PageDown, Home or End
or click on one of the four blue arrows to choose an
instrument. You may also hit the first letter of the
instrument on the keyboard to activate a quick search.
Confirm by pressing ENTER or by double-clicking on the
instrument name. This option can also be called with the
F3 key.
SAVE writes the instrument back to the bankfile. Note: If
you need instruments to be saved in a different format,
contact us and provide a detailed description of what you
desire. This option can also be called with the F4 key.
SAVE AS adds the instruments to the bankfile. The user may
either specify a new name or overwrite an existing
instrument. You may check what instruments already exist.
All of them are displayed in the box. Flip through pages by
processing as explained in option LOAD. Nevertheless you
will be asked to confirm again when overwriting an
instrument. The bankfile will eventually be expanded (see
DELETE for details). Press the TAB key to toggle between
boxes or simply click at them.
DELETE erases an instrument of the selected type from a
bankfile. Note: the size of the bankfile will not change.
The next instrument being saved will use any free space
within the bankfile before expanding it. See LOAD for
details about selecting an instrument. This option can also
be called with the F5 key.
SELECT BANKFILE lets you choose the bankfile to load or
delete instruments from, to save or add new instruments to.
Bankfiles must have the extension BNK. The way of selecting
a bankfile corresponds to choosing an instrument described in
option LOAD. To change to a different drive click on its
letter or press the TAB key to enable drive select by
keyboard. Doing this lets you choose the new drive with the
left and right arrow key, ENTER to confirm. Press TAB again
to switch back to the name box.
LOAD INS FILE has been provided to load files created with
AdLib's Instrument Maker. The way of selecting an INS file
corresponds to choosing an instrument described in option
LOAD. See SELECT BANKFILE to learn about changing drives.
The extension of a valid INS file must be INS. These files
always use full sine waves (Type 0). The INS file standard
is far inferior to bankfiles and obsolete.
VOICE Options:
──────────────
AdLib compatible soundcards support two different types of
instruments: single operator instruments (percussive voices
like SNARE DRUM, TOM TOM, TOP CYMBAL and HIHAT) and double
operator instruments (MELODIC and BASE DRUM voices). The
latter type allows an alternative method of sound generating:
Additive Synthesis. Vice versa: Additive Synthesis only works
on melodic and base drum voices.
As well as in Visual Composer the pitch of percussive
instruments - except the base drum and the tom tom - is
fixed (I had to do some special tricks to realize that).
A mark at the right end shows that the corresponding option
is active.
Select the type of instrument you want to edit.
IMPORTANT: When loading or deleting from a bankfile, only
instruments matching the currently selected instrument type
are listed.
THE "PIANO":
────────────
Play the piano by using your keyboard (1st octave from Z to ,
halftones from s to j - 2nd octave from q to i plus major
third to p; halftones from 2 to 0). The key you press is
shown on the piano. Clicking with the mouse button is
possible as well. Press F1 to transpose the piano one octave
down or F2 to do the opposite. Using a mouse, simply click on
the arrows displayed at both ends of the piano.
QUITTING
Click on Quit or press ALT-Q or the F10 key to exit.

MISCELLANEOUS
Messages shown in read boxes are error messages. They
announce that an option failed to succeed.
Visual Composer uses a very stupid quicksort method. When
adding a number to an instrument name, it is sometimes wise
to insert a zero as first digit (like BELL03). Else the
instruments will be listed in a weird manner.
The window labeled ? is not only for information. Selecting
it also reinits the AdLib chip.
Command line parameters:
/nomouse deactivate the mouse
/mouse if TopTune can detect a proper mouse
driver, mouse support is enabled
Unless you want to change this option you need the parameter
only once.
TOPTUNE.CFG - the TopTune configuration file
TopTune saves four things in this file:
A note whether mouse support is disabled or enabled, the path
of the bankfile you used last and the directory of this
bankfile as well as the directory where your INS files are
stored.
TopTune won't make your computer explode when the CFG-file
misses, so don't worry. Note: If you change bankfiles or
directories, they will only be saved to TOPTUNE.CFG if they
are on the drive you started TopTune from (if you know about
programming, you know why).
Requirements:
- DOS Versions 3.3 or above
- about 100k free memory
- a 100% compatible Video Graphics Array (VGA) with 128k min.
- AdLib or compatible soundcard at 388h
- a Microsoft, Mouse Systems or Logitech compatible mouse
(optional but highly recommended)
- be sure to set FILES=20 or above
Limits:
- the size of the bankfile must not exceed 50,000 bytes,
that means not more than 1111 instruments per bankfile
(should be enough, eh ?)
- I assume that when you load an instrument you want to save
it after modifying. For this, TopTune will refuse to load
read-only bankfiles or read-only INS files.
