-
- Attach to Hand automatically processes email attachments
- into a Palm-compatible format and delivers those file
- attachments to your Palm device with just a touch of the
- HotSync button!á There is no other program for Palm OS
- devices like Attach to Hand.
-
- Attach to Hand can be used to keep your Palm device up to
- date on whatever important documents, spreadsheets,
- schedules, databases, games, etc. that you choose.á For
- example, your company may send out revised schedules
- frequently as Microsoft Word or Excel email attachments.
- Just create a rule in Outlook so that Attach to Hand will
- recognize these email messages.á Then HotSync your Palm
- device to get the new files once they arrive in your Inbox.
- Choose from among many popular Palm DOC readers,
- spreadsheets, and databases to read the converted Word and
- Excel files on your Palm device.
-
-
- 4.0 - SOFTWARE SPECIFICS
-
- 4.1 - PALM SPECIFICS
-
- Attach to Hand requires that Palm Desktop 2.0 or 3.0
- be installed on the PC. Each Palm device user who
- plans to HotSync to the PC must perform at least one
- HotSync on that PC BEFORE you install Attach to Hand.
- The HotSync procedure creates the necessary user
- names and directories for Palm Desktop.
-
- 4.2 - OUTLOOK SPECIFICS
-
- If you are using Microsoft Outlook 98 or 2000 without
- Microsoft Exchange server, you have the Rules Wizard
- included. If you are using Microsoft Outlook as a
- client to Microsoft Exchange server you should have
- Inbox Assistant (instead of Rules Wizard) as a menu
- option under Tools on the Microsoft Outlook menu bar.
- If you have Outlook 97 and do not have Inbox
- Assistant, you will need to download the Rules Wizard
- from http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/downloadDetails/
- ruleswiz.htm?s=/downloadCatalog/dldoutlook.asp .á Next
- you will need to set up a rule with Inbox Assistant or
- the Rules Wizard.
-
-
- 5.0 - HOW TO SETUP ATTACH TO HAND
-
- Attach to Hand is launched via a Custom Action in Microsoft
- Outlook. After you have properly configured your system as
- outlined in the Software Specifics section above, install
- Attach to Hand by running the setup.exe program included
- with Attach to Hand.
-
- You will need to create a rule in Microsoft Outlook to
- identify which incoming mail messages you will process.
- You may need to work with the senders of these messages to
- make sure your rule will identify which messages have file
- attachments meant to be transferred to your Palm device.
- Next, choose Inbox Assistant or Rules Wizard from the Tools
- menu in Outlook. Follow the instructions below.
-
- 5.1 - FOR RULES WIZARD ...

- options (e.g. "with specific words in the subject")
- as a condition.
- On the same screen scroll down the list of
- conditions and check "which has an attachment".
- Then click on "specific words" in the Rule
- description box.
- On the next screen type in the phrase to search
- for (e.g. "Attach to Hand test subject heading" in

-
- Congratulations! You have finished configuring
- your Outlook rule for Attach to Hand. Whenever you
- receive incoming mail, your rule will check to see
- if that message meets the criteria you set up for
- Attach to Hand. If it does, Attach to Hand will
- copy the (first) message attachment so that it is
- ready to be installed to your Palm device the next
- time you perform a HotSync.
-
-
- 5.2 - FOR INBOX ASSISTANT ...
- Click the "Add Rule" button.
- Set up your rule criteria in the Edit Rule
- window.
- In the section with the label "When a message
- arrives that meets the following conditions," set up
- your filter criteria based on the address the message
- is sent from and/or the subject. After you do this,
- click the "Advanced" button.
- On the next screen, the "Advanced" window, select
- the check box marked "Only items with attachments".
- Then click the "OK" button.
- Next select the check box marked "Custom."
- Next select the down arrow in the combo box next
- to "Custom."
- If Attach to Hand is properly installed, you should
- see "Launch" as an entry in the combo box. Select it,
- then locate the AttInst.exe file in the "Program to
- Launch" window. AttInst.exe is in the directory to
- which you installed Attach to Hand.
- Click "OK" at the top of the Edit Rule window when
- you are done.
- Click "OK" to close Inbox Assistant.
-
- Congratulations! You have finished configuring
- your Outlook rule for Attach to Hand. Whenever you
- receive incoming mail, your rule will check to see

- ready to be installed to your Palm device the next
- time you perform a HotSync.
-
-

- 7.0 - WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UNREGISTERED AND REGISTERED
- VERSIONS OF ATTACH TO HAND?
-
- The unregistered version is a trial version that expires after
- 30 days. No features are disabled in the unregistered version.
- Both unregistered and registered versions work on computers
- with one or more Palm Desktop users.
-
-
- 8.0 - WHAT PALM SOFTWARE DO I USE TO READ CONVERTED FILES?
-
- In addition to .PRC and .PDB files, Attach to Hand can process
- Microsoft Word (.DOC) files, Microsoft Excel (.XLS) files,
- Rich Text format (.RTF) files, text (.TXT) files, and
- comma-separated value (.CSV) files.á Word, rich text format,
- and text files can be converted to the Palm DOC format.á You
- can read Palm DOC files with a DOC reader.á Several shareware
- and commercial DOC readers can be found at
- http://www.palmgear.com.á Excel and comma-separated value files
- can be converted to JFile, JFile 4.x, HanDBase, MiniCalc,
- Quicksheet, or Tinysheet format.á Use the Attach to Hand
- Options program to choose which of these programs you want to
- use to read converted Excel or CSV files. áJFile can be found
- at http://www.land-j.com.á HanDBase can be found at
- http://www.ddhsoftware.com.á MiniCalc can be found at
- http://www.solutions.hand.org.á Quicksheet can be found at
- http://www.cesinc.com. Tinysheet can be found at
- http://www.iambic.com.
-
- 8.1 - Note to MiniCalc users: Attach to Hand is only
- compatible with MiniCalc version 4.5 and higher. You
- must install the pimc.xla Excel add-on and the
- MiniCalc Sync Manager (mcm.exe) files included with
- MiniCalc. These files are necessary for MiniCalc to
- work with Attach to Hand.
-
- 8.2 - Note to Quicksheet users:á If you are using
- Quicksheet with Attach to Hand you must install and
- activate the Quicksheet conduit.á Attach to Hand was
- tested with Quicksheet 5.0.
-
- 8.3 - Note to Tinysheet users:á If you are using
- Tinysheet with Attach to Hand you must install the
- Tinysheet conduit. Attach to Hand works with both
- the Tinysheet version 2 and the Tinysheet version 3
- conduits. Attach to Hand was tested with Tinysheet
- versions 2.56 and 3.0.
-
-
- 9.0 - HOW DO I REGISTER ATTACH TO HAND?
-
- First install Attach to Hand and make sure it performs to your
- satisfaction. You may register Attach to Hand by using the
- enclosed ORDER.HTM form. You may also register on-line at
- http://www2.viaweb.com/pilotgearsw/tlasoftware.html. When you
- register you will need to include your Attach to Hand product
- registration number. To generate a registration number, first
- set up Attach to Hand to process an incoming message.
- (Instructions are provided in this manual.) After you have
- successfully processed an incoming message with Attach to Hand,
- locate your Attach to Hand registration number. Here's how:
- Click on your Windows Start button.á Then, select "Programs"
- then "Attach to Hand" then "Attach to Hand Options." From the
- Attach to Hand Options Help menu, select "Registration Code".
- Your registration number should be listed on this screen. On
- the next screen, the "Attach to Hand Registration" window, your
- registration number should be listed.
-
- If you prefer you can just click the "Send" button to create a
- new email message in Outlook that automatically fills in your
- registration number, Palm user name, and the email address for
- TLA Software. When you are done creating the new email
- message, click "Send" and the message will be saved to your
- Outbox and sent the next time you connect to your mail server.
-
- Note: If you are using Outlook as a client to Microsoft
- Exchange Server and do not have a "default profile" for
- Outlook, you will not be able to use the Send button to send
- in your registration number.á You will need to create an email
- message manually and copy the registration number into the
- message yourself.
-
- WARNING: Do not key in a code until you have obtained the
- correct code from TLA Software! An incorrect code could
- disable Attach to Hand.
-
- When you have paid and sent in your registration number, TLA
- Software will send you your code. When you have received
- your code from TLA Software, type in your code on the Attach
- to Hand Options "Registration code" screen. This code will
- convert your copy of Attach to Hand from the unregistered to
- the registered version.
-
-
- 10.0 - ATTACH TO HAND SPECIAL FEATURES FOR A COMPUTER WITH
- MULTIPLE USERS
-
- Attach to Hand is ideal for computers with one or with
- multiple Palm Desktop users.áIf you have only one Palm
- Desktop user name on the computer on which Attach to Hand
- is installed, all messages fitting the rule that you create
- will be processed by Attach to Hand. If there are many Palm
- Desktop users on the same computer, Attach to Hand allows
- you to send an email attachment to all users OR only to the
- users you specify. Here are the instructions when you have
- multiple Palm Desktop user names:
-
- Instructions to message receivers: If you want all Palm
- Desktop Users on one computer to receive all email that
- Attach to Hand processes on that computer, go to the
- Attach to Hand Options program. Here's how to find and
- configure Attach to Hand Options. On the receiving
- computer, go to the Windows Start button->Programs->
- Attach to Hand->Attach to Hand Options. On the Attach to
- Hand Options screen, make a check in the box that says
- "Install processed attachments to all Palm users on this
- computer."
-
- Instructions to message senders: If you want to customize
- which of multiple users on one computer receives incoming
- email attachments processed by Attach to Hand, use the
- instructions listed below:
-
- á - On the receiving computer(s), uncheck the box in Attach
- to Hand Options for "Install processed attachments to all
- Palm users on this computer."
-
- á - To send the message attachment to ALL user names listed
- in Palm Desktop on the receiving computer, make sure that
- the phrase "All Palm Users" is in the body of the message
- you send. The phrase "All Palm Users" is case sensitive.
- You must include it with each word capitalized as
- illustrated.
-
- á - To send the message attachment only to specified users,
- include those user names in the body of the message you
- send. Names in the message must match Palm Desktop user
- names exactly. Name identification is case sensitive.
-
- NOTE: If "Install processed attachments to all Palm users
- on this computer" is unchecked, and "All Palm Users" AND
- individual user names are listed in the body of the message,
- the message attachment will go to all users of Palm Desktop
- on the receiving computer. If "All Palm Users" is not
- specified and no user names appear in the body of the
- incoming message, NO users will get the message attachment.
-
-
- 11.0 - ATTACH TO HAND PROGRAM RESTRICTIONS
-
- Attach to Hand is designed for users with moderate email
- traffic. When many incoming email messages arrive in your
- Outlook inbox at the same time, Attach to Hand may not copy
- attachments successfully. You should leave Outlook running
- at all times or check for new email frequently to minimize
- the chances of having this problem.
-
- By design, when Attach to Hand processes a new file
- attachment that matches the name of a previous file
- attachment, the old file will be OVERWRITTEN. This behavior
- facilitates automatic file updates. If you do not want a file
- overwritten, simply rename it or copy it as another filename.
-
- In the Attach to Hand Options program, if you want to increase
- the maximum limits for email attachment numbers or size, there
- are some things you should do to improve your chances of
- successfully processing larger or multiple attachments. First,
- leave Outlook running on your computer at all times and check
- your email frequently. Second, your computer needs at least a
- 300 MHz processor and 64-128 MB RAM. On slower computers and
- computers with less than 64MB of RAM, Attach to Hand may not
- convert larger or multiple attachments successfully. Email
- messages with a large file attachment or more than one
- attachment may produce "out of memory", "server busy", or
- other error messages. If you experience this problem, go to
- the Attach to Hand Options program on your Start menu. Try
- changing the maximum number of attachments processed to "1"
- and setting the maximum file size to "50000" bytes. Another
- scenario in which file attachments may not convert is when an
- attachment exceeds the limits of the Palm OS program to which
- you are converting the attachment. If this occurs, please
- consult the documentation accompanying that Palm OS program.
-
- Attach to Hand uses the Microsoft file conversion routines
- for compatibility with as many DOC and XLS file versions as
- possible.á This compatibility comes at the cost of slower file
- conversions of DOC and XLS file types.
-
- To preserve the most formatting when converting an Excel XLS
- file, configure the Attach to Hand Options program to convert
- XLS files to MiniCalc, Quicksheet, or Tinysheet format. You
- will need to have MiniCalc, Quicksheet, or Tinysheet
- installed on your Palm device to read files in their formats.
- When using Attach to Hand with Quicksheet or Tinysheet, you
- must install and enable their accompanying desktop conduit
- software!
-
- For conversions to JFile or HanDBase, Attach to Hand uses
- the "Save As CSV (comma delimited)" converter in Excel.á As
- a result, Attach to Hand will convert only the first
- worksheet in an Excel workbook file to these database formats.
- An Excel worksheet with several "sets" of data may not convert
- cleanly.
-
- Attach to Hand uses the "Save As Text Only" converter in Word.
- Therefore, only plain text is preserved during DOC file
- conversions.
-
-
- 12.0 - TROUBLESHOOTING
-
- Problem:á When I look at the Attach to Hand Options
- registration code screen, I find that the registration
- number is blank.
- Answer:á The registration number is generated after the
- first time you process an incoming message with Attach to
- Hand.á The 30 day trial period for the unregistered
- version of Attach to Hand does not begin until after you
- process your first message.
-
- Problem:á When I select "Launch" then hit the CHANGE button
- in the "Custom Action" sequence, I don't get a dialog box
- to find the AttInst.EXE file.
- Answer:á This symptom usually indicates a problem in the
- Windows system registry.á If you have an English version
- of Windows, it is likely that Attach to Hand did not
- install properly.á You should make sure all programs are
- closed, then reinstall Attach to Hand.á If you have a
- non-English version of Windows, you may need to change a
- registry entry.á To do so, run REGEDIT. á Then find the
- "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client
- \Custom Actions" key.á Change the path name in the value
- data for the "Launch" value name to point to the correct
- location of the launcher.dll file.á In English, the path
- name will be something like "C:\Program Files
- \Microsoft Exchange\Custom Actions\Launcher.dll".
-
- Problem:á I can't figure out how to get Attach to Hand to
- work with Outlook Express.
- Answer:á Microsoft has not yet provided the necessary
- "hooks" for Attach to Hand to work with Outlook Express.
-
- Problem:á Attach to Hand only saves the first file
- attachment in a message.
- Answer:á Attach to Hand has been written to minimize the
- risk of overloading the Launch program.á Processing
- multiple attachments may be added to a future release if
- doing so doesn't compromise the reliability of Attach to
- Hand.
-
- Problem:á Attach to Hand gives me an error message when
- my rule processes messages without attachments.á How can
- I prevent this error?
- Answer:á Both Rules Wizard and Inbox Assistant rules can
- be configured to process only messages with attachments.
- See the Rules Wizard setup or Inbox Assistant setup
- section of this manual.
-
- Problem: I can't find Attach to Hand on my Palm device.
- I can't find the files on my Palm device that Attach to
- Hand has processed.
- Answer: Attach to Hand does not install on your Palm
- device. Whenever you HotSync, Attach to Hand =does=
- install THE ATTACHMENTS IT CONVERTS to your Palm device.
- Converted Word and Excel attachments will seem
- "invisible" to you unless you have a Palm OS program that
- will read them. To read converted MS Word files, you
- must have a DOC reader on your Palm device. You can find
- several DOC readers at http://www.palmgear.com . To read
- converted MS Excel files you must have one of the
- databases or spreadsheets supported by Attach to Hand.
- Run the included Attach to Hand Options program listed on
- your Windows Start menu to see your choices.
-
- Problem:á I get an error message that says "Incoming
- message has no attachment to save" yet there actually is
- an attachment.
- Answer:á This message may occur when the file size of the
- attachment is zero bytes (empty.)
-
- Problem:á I get an error message that says "Unable to
- detect an incoming message" and Attach to Hand doesn't
- save the file attachment.á What is happening?
- Answer:á This message can occur in at least 3 types of
- situations ---
- 1- Your site is using Microsoft Exchange server.á A
- message is sent to your Inbox on the server and is
- then deleted from the server before you open Outlook to
- check for new mail.ááThe "deleted" message causes the
- "Unable to detect an incoming message" message to
- display.
- 2- Another rule acts on the Inbox message before the
- Attach to Hand rule acts.
- 3- Your connection to Microsoft Exchange Server needs
- to be refreshed. (Note: If this is the problem,
- rebooting your PC will resolve it and get rid of the
- "Unable to detect an incoming message" error
- messages.)
-
- Problem:á I get an error message that says "Could not
- retrieve any user names from Palm Desktop" and Attach to
- Hand doesn't save the file attachment.á I do have at
- least one user name in Palm Desktop.á What is happening?
- Answer:á This message can occur when Attach to Hand is
- trying to process multiple incoming messages
- simultaneously.á The best way to work around this
- problem is to retrieve your email as often as possible.
- For optimal performance on a local area network (LAN),
- leave Outlook running at all times if possible.
-
- Problem: When I click the "Send" button on the
- registration code screen I get an error message.
- Answer: If you are using Outlook as a client to
- Microsoft Exchange Server, the "Send" button logs you
- on using the "default profile" for Outlook. If you
- don't have a default profile for Outlook or can't log
- on to Exchange Server with the default profile, you
- will not be able to use the "Send" button to send in
- your registration number. You will need to create an
- email message manually and copy the registration
- number into the message yourself.
-
- Problem: How do I uninstall Attach to Hand?
- Answer: To uninstall Attach to Hand, run Add/Remove
- Programs in Control Panel. Select "Attach to Hand"
- from the Install/Uninstall list and click the
- Add/Remove button. Then choose the Remove option from
- the Attach to Hand screen that appears and click the
- Finish button.
