  75. -------------------------- Installation ----------------------------------
  76.  
  77. First, make sure you have enought free space on your pilot.  To do so, run
  78. the Memory application on the pilot.  If you do not have at least 260K
  79. free you cannot install either database.   If you don't have enough for this, you
  80. will either have to choose to delete apps from the same Memory application, or 
  81. choose to not install this program until you have that amount of free memory.
  82.  
  83. To install Thesaurus onto your Palm device,  follow the instructions below for
  84. your desktop platform:
  85.  
  86. WINDOWS
  87. 1.From the Start Menu choose Programs then Palm Desktop and then 
  88. choose Install Tool. The Install Tool screen appears.
  89.  
  90. 2.Use the pop-up menu at the top of the screen to specifiy which handheld
  91. you want to install onto (if you use more than one with this PC). 
  92.  
  93. 3.Drag-and-drop method: Locate the TRANS.PRC file and simply drag
  94. the icon into the Install Tool window.  
  95.  
  96. 4.Dialog box method: Click Add.... You're shown the usual Windows
  97. Open File dialog box. Find the TRANS.PRC file, then double-click. Repeat 
  98. steps 3 and 4 for the SPANISH.PDB file.
  99.  
  100. 5.When you're finished choosing the files to install, Click the "Done" button
  101. On the next window that comes up click "OK" and the windows will close. 
  102.  
  103. MACINTOSH
  104. 1.From the Instant Palm Desktop menu, choose HotSync Mananger. The
  105.  HotSync Manager screen appears.
  106.  
  107. 2.From the HotSync menu, choose Install. A dialog box appears, showing
  108. all the software you've scheduled for installation. Use the pop-up menu at
  109. the top of the screen to specifiy which handheld you want to install onto 
  110. (if you use more than one with this Macintosh). 
  111.  
  112. 3.Drag-and-drop method: Click the Desktop. Locate the TRANS.PRC file 
  113. and simply drag the icon into the Install Handheld Files window.
  114.  
  115. 4.Dialog box method: Click Add to List. You're shown the usual Macintosh
  116. Open File dialog box. Find the TRANS.PRC file, then double-click.  Repeat 
  117. steps 3 and 4 for the SPANISH.PDB file.
  118.  
  119. 5.When you're finished choosing files to install, close the window and
  120. quit HotSync Manager.

  122. ----------------------- Instructions For Use ------------------------------
  123. --Selecting a Language
  124. If you have more than one language installed, then running the Translate
  125. application will bring up a language selection screen.  From here you can
  126. choose which language you would like to translate to/from.  To do this, touch
  127. the language in the list box that you would like to use.  If there are no
  128. languages loaded into the pilot, you will not be able to get past this screen.

  130. --The Main Screen
  131. The screen contains two fields, the English Word and the Spanish Word.  There
  132. are also buttons: <<, <, To [Language], >, and >>, under the English word, and
  133. buttons: <<, <, To English, >, and >>, under the Spanish word.  In addition,
  134. there are Edit Entry and Add Entry buttons along the bottom of the screen,
  135. and New Word and New Phrase buttons along the top of the screen.

  137. --English To Spanish word
  138. To translate from English to the Spanish word, touch the English field
  139. with the stylus and then write your word in the graffiti area.  When you are
  140. finished writing the word to translate, press the 'To [Language]'
  141. button.  The result should show in the Spanish word's field below.

  143. --Spanish word To English
  144. To translate from a Spanish word to English, touch the Spanish word field
  145. with the stylus and then write your word in the graffiti area.  When you are
  146. finished writing the word to translate, press the 'To English' button.  The
  147. result should show in the English field above.
  148.  
  149. The program will always attempt to find the exact word you entered.  If it
  150. finds the word you will see the word 'Found!' in the middle area of the
  151. screen.  If it cannot find the word you entered, it will search for the word
  152. as the start of another word.  If finds it this way the screen will show
  153. 'Found within word!', and the closest word in the language you enter will be
  154. shown over the field you entered text on.  If it still cannot find the word,
  155. it will search for the closest match of the word, and show 'Closest match!',
  156. and show the word's closest match and it's translation.  At any time during
  157. this search, the cancel button can be pressed to abort the search.
  158.  
  159.     --Additional Buttons
  160.     The << and >> buttons will "rewind" and "fast forward" to the first or
  161.     last word in that list, respectively.  If you press << under the English
  162.     word you will get the first word in the English list, and it's equivalent
  163.     Spanish word also.  If you were to press >> under the Spanish word,
  164.     you would get the last Spanish word in the list, and it's associated
  165.     English word also.

  167.     The < and > buttons will go back or forward one entry in the list,
  168.     respectively.   If after translating a word, you were to press > under the
  169.     English word, you would get the next English word and it's equivalent
  170.     Spanish word.

  172.     --Edit Entry Button
  173.     This button brings up the edit screen which allows you to edit the current
  174.     entry.  There is also a choice to delete the current entry.  To edit the
  175.     entry, just change the fields you desire changed, and press the save button.
  176.     If you change your mind about editing the words, press the Cancel button, to
  177.     return to the main screen.

  179.     --Add Entry Button
  180.     This button brings up the Add Entry screen which allows you to add a new
  181.     entry.  To add an entry, just complete the fields you desire to add, and
  182.     press the save button.   If you change your mind about adding the words,
  183.     press the Cancel button, to return to the main screen.

  185.     --New Word Button
  186.     This button blanks out both fields to allow you to enter a new word to
  187.     translate.
  188.  
  189.     --New Phrase Button
  190.     This button takes you to the phrase translation screen, where you can
  191.     write sentences and have them translated for you.
  192.  
  193.     --Export Button
  194.     Pressing this button will export the current entry to the Flash!
  195.     application. This button will only show on the screen if you have both
  196.     enabled Flash! exporting in the Preferences section, and you have the
  197.     Flash!  program installed on your PalmPilot.  For more information, see
  198.     the section on Preferences below.

  201. --The Translate Phrase Screen
  202. The screen contains two multi-line fields, the English Phrase and the
  203. Spanish Phrase.  There are also buttons: To [Language], and To English.
  204. In addition, there are New Word and New Phrase buttons along the top of the
  205. screen.  During a translation, a cancel button appears, and can be pressed to
  206. abort the search process.

  209. --English Phrase To Spanish phrase
  210. To translate from English to the Spanish language, touch the English field
  211. with the stylus and then write your sentence in the graffiti area.  When
  212. you are finished writing the sentence to translate, press the 'To
  213. [Language]' button.  The result should show in the Spanish phrase's field
  214. below.

  216. --Spanish word To English
  217. To translate a Spanish phrase to English, touch the Spanish phrase field
  218. with the stylus and then write your sentence in the graffiti area.  When
  219. you are finished writing the sentence to translate, press the 'To
  220. English' button.  The result should show in the English field above.

  222. NOTE: The Phrase translation used in the program does not make any attempts
  223. at being grammatically correct.  Rather, it works by searching for an exact
  224. match for each word.  If it does not find an exact match, it leaves the word
  225. in the original language and puts square-brackets [] around the word.  While
  226. very few sentences will yield a perfect translation, this feature can still
  227. be quite useful for getting the 'jist' of a sentence quickly.

  229.      --New Word Button
  230.        This button brings you back to the word translation screen where you
  231.        can enter a new word to translate, or add and edit entries.
  232.  
  233.      --New Phrase Button
  234.        This button blanks out both fields for you to start writing a new
  235.        phrase to translate.

  238. --Choose Language
  239. From the File pull down menu, you can bring up the Choose Language choice,
  240. which will allow you to switch to a different language, as well as delete an
  241. individual language database. This screen contains a list of languages
  242. available and OK button.  To switch languages, touch the language of your
  243. choice with the stylus and press the OK button.  To delete a language, touch
  244. the language of your choice with the stylus, and press the Menu silkscreen
  245. button to bring down the menu.  Select Delete Language from the File
  246. drop-down menu and answer yes to the confirmation screen.  The language will
  247. be deleted from the list.

  249. NOTE: The shareware demo version only functions with the 2 Spanish databases
  250. distributed with it.
  251.  
  252. --Preferences
  253. From the File pull down menu, you can bring up the Preferences choice,
  254. which will allow you to toggle the HotSync backup setting for whichever
  255. language database is currently in use. When The Backup Database checkbox is
  256. checked, the entire database is backed up on the next HotSync.  If the
  257. checkbox is not checked, the database will not be backed up.  Since the
  258. databases are rather large, the HotSync can take a long time if it has to
  259. back up these languages every time.  So until a conduit is written, this
  260. measure serves to allow the user to select when the databases will be backed
  261. up.  You should only set this checkbox after making serious changes to the
  262. database.   After selecting your choice, press the OK button at the bottom of
  263. the screen.
  264.    The next option allows one to setup the exporting of entries to
  265. the Flash! application.  From the Flash! author Jaime Quinn

  268.   Flash! is a personal trainer for your mind, based on the concept of flash
  269.   cards. Its "learning" mode conforms to the latest learning research by
  270.   quizzing you on a personal schedule that adapts to the difficulty you have
  271.   learning each individual fact; in "quiz" mode you can evaluate your
  272.   progress.  Supports full on-pilot editing capabilities and import from
  273.   several formats. Quiz yourself on the honor system or using multiple
  274.   choice. 50% of income from Flash!  goes to charity.

  279. The Translate program can export word entries to the Flash! program in two
  280. different ways, selectable via the preferences.
  281.   --The Manual export mode will only export an entry if you press the Export
  282.     button on the main screen.
  283.   --The Automatic export mode will automatically export any words you look up
  284.     that have an exact match.  Words within words, or Closest match finds
  285.     will not automatically export as they may not have been the words you
  286.     were trying to learn.  You can always override this and export manually
  287.     by pressing the Export button.
  288.   --The None mode will turn off exporting altogether.

  291. --Cut, Copy, and Paste
  292. From the pull down menus, you can cut, copy, or paste to and from either word
  293. on the screen, and bring/take either word into/from another application (such
  294. as the memopad application).

  307. 04/08/98 - V1.24 - Major revision.  Fixed several major bugs including one
  308. that corrupted the indexing on some new entries when they are added.  Also,
  309. added support for Flash! and changed the language selection screen to require
  310. fewer pen-strokes.

  312. 02/03/98 - V1.16 - Minor Revision.  Fixed bug with new word lookups
  313. routine that caused foreign-to-english lookups to not find the exact
  314. match, even though it may have existed.  Added a Cancel button to the
  315. word and phrase search routines.  Cut/Copy/Paste functions now work from the
  316. New/Edit Entry screens.

  318. 10/30/97 - V1.12 - Minor Revision.  Word lookups are now MUCH faster when
  319. there is no exact match for the word.

  322. editing entries corrupting the indexing.  Also fixed it so that switching
  323. back and forth between Translate and other applications would remember what

  342. but then crashes due to a problem with > 32K sizes in Hotsync 1.0.  Also
  343. fixed problem of program going into endless loop if there is no database
  344. loaded.
