My CD ROM drive is not recognized by Nero. What to do?
------------------------------------------------------
Currently there are several hundreds or maybe even thousands of
different models of CD-ROM drives available on the market. Due to
time and availability limitations it┤s absolutely impossible to
support every available CD-ROM drive models. Nero already supports
many different CD-ROM drives but a support of all CD-ROM drives is
simply impossible.
For users of not directly supported CD-ROM drives, Nero offers the
menu com-mand CD-Rekorder -> Autodetect CD-ROM. Once a CD-ROM
drive was successfully detected by Nero it may be used as input
device for "on the fly" copies or to save CD tracks. Nero┤s
autodetection should be able to detect most CD-ROM drives that are
not directly supported.
CD-ROM Autodetection
If this menu command is activated Nero tries to determine the
specific properties of a CD-ROM drive by transmitting some SCSI or
IDE commands and check the drive┤s answer afterwards. Unfortunately
this method is some kind of risky because there is no standard SCSI
or IDE command set supported by each and every CD-ROM model. The
result of sending a not supported command to a CD-ROM drive might
be a system crash.
This phenomenon is already known from the Windows 95 command
"hardware detection". Because this command may be risky it┤s a very
good idea to close all programs and save data before starting an
autodetection.
1. Extract first the file 'TESTCD.ZIP'
2. Open Nero
3. Click on "Cancel"
4. Verify that the name of your CD Recorder appears in the bottom
of the Nero window. If "Image Recorder" appears instead of your
recorder, open the menu command CD Recorder -> Choose Recorder and
select your recorder
5. Using the menu command File - >Burn image, burn the image file you
saved before onto an empty CD.
6. Insert then the CD you have just burned into your CD ROM drive
and choose the menu command CD Recorder -> Autodetect CD-ROM.
A dialog box opens allowing to choose the not supported CD-ROM
drive from a list of available devices. Furthermore the bus type
(IDE/SCSI or unknown) and the command set may be defined. If
possible Nero presets these options with reasonable default values.
If SCSI or IDE is preselected as bus type it┤s most likely not a
good idea to change this settings because Nero detected the bus
type by checking the driver. The result therefore is most certainly
correct. If you have an IDE CD-ROM then the command list in the
dialog contains only a single entry. This is because IDE CD-ROM
drives have a standard command set and the differences between
CD-ROM models are relatively small. If you┤re an owner of a
SCSI-CD-ROM you shouldn┤t need to change the preselected command
set because again Nero has probably pre-selected a "reasonable"
entry.
7. Now click the OK button. Nero will now try to detect the specific
properties of your CD-ROM drive. The current activity is displayed
in a dialog box.
8. Once the CD-ROM autodetection is completed Nero will show the read
speed of your CD-ROM drive. This information is given for data and
audio as well. The results might be different from the expected
value because the results depend upon the kind of data (audio or
mode1/mode2), the operating system and other properties your
computer. Especially audio read speed may be slower than data read
speed. If the audio read speed of your CD-ROM drive turns out to be
slower than 150KB per second or if your CD-ROM drive doesn┤t
support audio reading at all (indicated by a dimmed gray display of
the audio read speed display) then Nero can┤t use your drive as
input device for audio and mixed mode CDs.
9. At this point we would like to ask you to send us the drive
parameters of your successfully identified CD-ROM drive by e-mail
to support@ahead.de or fax to ++49 7248 911 888. With this
information we will be able to automatically support this CD-ROM
drive for future Nero releases.
