  1. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE

  3. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  4. before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  5. using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
  6. differ on details -- some request registration while others
  7. require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
  8. registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  9. using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  11. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
  12. and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  13. exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  14. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  15. of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  16. and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  17. distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  18. and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  19. specific group. For example, some authors require written
  20. permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  21. Shareware.

  23. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  24. should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  25. whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
  26. fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
  27. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
  28. has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
  29. product, you don't pay for it.

  33. Users of 'Charlie' must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
  34. 'Charlie' is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all
  35. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  36. the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
  37. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or conse-
  38. quential, which may result from the use of 'Charlie'."

  40. 'Charlie' is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  41. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  42. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  43. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  44. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  45. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  46. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  47. useful and find that you are using 'Charlie' and continue to use
  48. 'Charlie' after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
  49. istration payment of Us$ 19 to Monte Carlo Software.  The Us$ 19
  50. registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  51. computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just like
  52. a book.  An example is that this software may be used by any
  53. number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  54. location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  55. being used at one location while it's being used at another.
  56. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
  57. same time.

  59. Commercial users of 'Charlie' must register and pay for their
  60. copies of 'Charlie' within 30 days of first use or their license
  61. is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be made by con-
  62. tacting Monte Carlo Software.

  64. Anyone distributing 'Charlie' for any kind of remuneration must
  65. first contact Monte Carlo Software at the address below for authorization.
  66. This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  67. recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
  68. shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
  69. 'Charlie' immediately (However Monte Carlo Software must still be advised so
  70. that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
  71. version of 'Charlie'.).

  73. You are encouraged to pass a copy of 'Charlie' along to your
  74. friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their
  75. copy if they find that they can use it.  All registered users
  76. will receive a copy of the latest version of the 'Charlie'
  77. system.
