- Subject: Fake Roots Get Deleted
- Date: September 18, 1990
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
-
- GENERAL
- INFORMATION: With current revisions of the 3.01 NET3 shell (including
- Rev. D), if a fake root is created and then a DIR SYS: (or
- whatever the volume name is) is executed, a directory
- listing at the volume level is shown and the fake root
- structure of the network drive is lost.
-
- For example:
-
- MAP ROOT G:=SYS:THIS/THAT
- The root directory is at subdirectory THAT
-
- DIR SYS:
- The contents of SYS: is listed
-
- MAP G:
- SYS: is returned. The fake root to THIS/THAT is gone.
-
- Fake roots are described as a security feature in Novell
- documentation. NetWare 386 v3.1 documentation says that
- users should not be assigned rights at the root directory
- for security reasons. If you do not want users to have
- rights, they should not be able to do a DIR.
-
- This problem has been reported to Engineering.
