- SUBJECT : XMS Shells Using Extended Memory
- DATE : 6/6/90
- FYI # : 060690pf
- OS VERSION : All
- REVISION :
- SHELL VERSION : v3.01
-
- GENERAL INFORMATION : From talking to one of the engineers, our XMS shell
- takes advantage of HMA, a special architecture using the first meg of extended
- memory. The neat thing about HMA is that it's available to real mode
- executables (without the previous hassle associated with the expanded EMS
- paging slight of hand). The limiting facility within HMA is that only one
- program at a time can utilize HMA memory.
-
- Windows 3.0 can load and run as well, as it has it's own extended memory
- manager, HIMEM.SYS, which uses all of the remaining extended memory after that
- used by HMA.
