- GENERAL
- INFORMATION: 1) IBM says that the 16/4 board will work on unshielded
- twisted pair (UTP) at 16Mbits for runs less that 100
- feet (that's 50 feet out and 50 feet back to the MAU).
- But if you have problems, they won't help. It has been
- reported that it works better with Proteon's series 70
- intelligent MAUs.
-
- 2) If somebody has some IBM 16/4 boards and wants to run
- on UTP, Proteon puts out a media filter (much different
- than the standard type 3 media filter that IBM/ROLM
- puts out) that will work either with their MAU or IBMs.
- Full standard Token-Ring specifications are not
- supported. The biggest limit is 100 nodes versus the
- standard 255. The cable that runs to the workstation
- is up to 300 feet (standard for UTP TRN), but remember;
- this means out to the workstation and back.
-
- 3) We have seen some problems with other companies (Madge,
- TCC) that claim they can run at 16Mbits on UTP. Only
- IBM and Proteon are tested under IMSP (at 16Mbit).
- Other companies may work with shielded twisted pair.
