- Not sure what I did, then, that trashed the floppy. It is on an Amdek
- computer which I was trying the 4.11 Shareware on. The Amdek is a
- strange beast...won't run QuickBasic and several other programs.
- The drive light was on (I noticed as I withdrew the disk...), and then
- I could do a dir, but no files were accessible.O BTW, how does
- Hyperdisk≈│achieve "0.2 mS" seek times on the CORETEST program. I KNOW
- it can't be true, but I was curious as to why it happens, as were some
- other folks on the BBS I frequent. If you have time to answer...

- HyperDisk does not disable CPU interrupt service as Super-PCKwik does.
- With QEMM use the HYPERDKX model. It will make request to QEMM's XMS
- extended memory transfer only disabling the interrupt service briefly.
-
- If you have a USR internal modem you should not have any problems. If
- you have an external modem, update you system to a 16550 UART (replace
- the 8250 UART, if you have not already). Don't run you serial link any
- faster than needed (19.2K for a 14.4K USR). This BBS has a USR internal
- modem (Dual Standard), uses HYPER386 and PCBoard 14.2 and has no
- problems dropping characters (Receiver Overruns).
-
- Give HyperDisk a try if you have any problems there are a number of
- parameters that can be used to minimize or elimanate the problem.

- No problem. You have an older version of the cache built into dBase IV.
- When dBase loads it tries to load DBCACHE also, due to changes the two
- different version are no longer compatible. Hence the error messages
- only means that any parameters that were set by dBase could not be
- processed. All you need to do is remove the cache option from the dBase

- In the next release of HyperDisk, I have separated the VERIFY function
- so that you can select diskette verify without also selecting Hard disk
- verify. Just what you need for the infrequent but error prone floppy
- diskette drives. With verify enabled you can open and close the floppy
- gate without trashing the diskette! If you removed while it is being
- written, just replace it without waiting for anything and all will be
- repaired.
-
- HyperDisk stops seeks. Seek are treated just like read or write
- operations: if the data is cached then return immediatly (near 0 time!).
- If the seeks are non-productive then quit moving the heads. The main
- reason for this optimization was due to the nature of the benchmarks
- that were being used to test caches. Most disk test benchmark programs
- are poorly adapted to testing caches. For example, Norton's SI derives
- most of the test's result from seek operations (nothing to do with
- reading or writing data). The balance of the test is random reads, a
- degernerate case for caching! Most of the time is spent moving the
- heads in the seek test, if the test cache were infinitly fast it would
- still not show zero time!
-
- Think about it! It is like running a race where everyone has 1 hour
- added to their track time. The slowest runner finishes in 24 minutes,
- so what if you ran in 10 you still finished with a composite time of 70
- minutes while the slowest runner finished in 84 minutes, you're only
- 20% faster! What! You say you were 240% faster. Naw... A likely story;
- after all you were one of the runners and we can see why you might be
- BIAS in reporting your score. See my point!
-
- Your applications are the best benchmarks, you don't need to
- interpolate the results. You have a direct result and can speak
- confidently about the results. No guessing about how Benchmark "X"
- correlates to the performance gain in application "Y". You know exactly
- how much time you saved.
-
- Thanks for the inquire,
-

- HyperDisk defaults to caching both the floppy and the hard drive. On

- warning single beep. Using the "H" setting, ie hard drive cache only,
- removes the problem "beep". I would like to cache both floppy and hard

- Many people have commented on the benchmarks results in a negative way.
- When I was in the commercial market I did not want to arouse any

- Staged Write ages (500 milliseconds, minimum) the write
- operations so that there is an opprotunity to optimize the disk update

-
- Advance Update is a enhancement to Staged Write; it allows your

- 2. if a cache is useful, which hyperd* do I use--I assume the
- hyperdkx because I'm using QEMM.

- HyperDisk and 4Dos are very compatible. J.P. Software recommends

-
- The config.sys is the best place to install HyperDisk. Don't worry about
- the SHELL statement. The shell is loaded after all of the device drivers
- are loaded (IBMBIO (or MSIO) performs multiple passes of the CONFIG.SYS

-
- To Load HyperDisk high requires either: Chips & Technologies 212 or 302

- or and equiv. HIMEM.SYS is NOT a load high manager.
-

- The shadow ram manager is called Invisible Ram and is available from
- Invisible Software, Inc., 1165 Chess Drive, Suite D, Foster City, CA
- 94404. The phone number is (415) 570-5967. The program only works with
- Chips And Technologies 286 and 386 support chip sets, but if you use
- these chip sets, you can hide an awful lot of drivers and TSR's in
- shadow ram and still have Super VGA graphics.
- The shadow ram manager seems to have problems with drivers that attempt
- to change their size after or while loading. Smartdrive.sys loads
- without
- any problems, hyperdisk will stop the system dead athe point it started
- to load. I see that when Hyperdisk is loaded, it displays an information
- seen (if loaded from the DOS prompt). Perhaps there is a conflict with
- the display mode. The shadow ram manager disables graphics modes while
- loading - perhaps this is why the Hyperdisk program hangs at the
- information screen. Can the display mode be forced to a non-graphic,
- basic text only type display mode while loading?
- Thanks...

- Yes, HyperDisk can be loaded easily with QEMM. You can not load
- HyperDisk using the "Optimizer" provided by Quarterdeck. However you can
- load it manually using LOADHI. However, the best way is to use the
- built-in load function within HyperDisk. Just add XS to the command
- line.
-
- Example: device=c:\hyper\hyperdkx.exe c:2048 s xs
-
- HyperDisk will then request a high memory area from the QEMM's XMS
- system and copy only the required instruction and data into high memory.

- Read the WIN3NOTE.TXT file. There is a small design flaw in the Windows
- 3.0 API callout structure that requires that you select the startup mode
- when a 3rd party device (like HyperDisk) is required to release memory
- in order that Win 3.0 has enough memory to execute in the required mode!
-
- Select a cache size while in Windows 3.0 using the CW:nnn parameter.

- I have what should be a very vanilla configuration, except for my disk

- EMS RAM, Adaptec RLL controller without any sector translation, driving
- Maxtor 1140 (1024 cylinders). 2 S + 2 P.
-
- No problems of any kind using an old Golden Bow Vcache-AT. Loaded
- Windows 3.0 about 2 months ago. Started getting very intermittent
- freezeups of only the keyboard and mouse. Rest of system seemed to
- work. Could still reboot system with cntl-alt-delete.
-
- Called Adaptec BBS, who referred me to README file for W3. I set my
- config.sys file with the /B- parm on smardrv.sys to disable
- double-buffering. As extra step, disabled track cache on Adaptec 2372B
- controller. Still getting very intermittend freezeups.
-
- Does this problem sound familiar. (Oh, forgot to mention Logitech
- Mouse, using MOUSE.SYS and now MOUSE.COM instead.) I'm a bit reluctant
- to try HYPERDISK only because my wife also uses this system a lot and
- needs to have a reliable system for her business.
-

- I don't think it is a cache software problem. To check this try Windows
- without a cache (I know this sounds like torture). The Windows 3.0
- package has sevaral hardware timing dependent timing bugs; these bugs
- are most likely the cause of the problems. Another test is to return
- your AT to a slower speed (more torture) with and without your cache
- installed. If Windows fails by itself then you know how to blame.
-
- Thanks for the inquire,

- Roger,
-
- Thanks for your reply.
- I'm not sure at all that it is Windows. It very well could be HIMEM.SYS
- or SMARTDRV.SYS. Sometimes the freezeups occur when the system is first
- booted up, and before any Windows work is done.
-
- The frustrating part about all this is that the problem is so
- intermittent that it is hard to reproduce. Imagine this: You come back
- to the system after you haven't worked on it for say 4 or 5 hours. It
- was fine when you left it (with a screen blanker). Now the system is
- locked up. All the time sitting at the DOS prompt.
-
- Do you have a list of known timing dependencies within Windows, or
- within the two drivers?
-
- This is all so frustrating. And this is on a true IBM PC AT which has
- been rock-stable for several years now, after some ..ah.. initial
- problems with the IBM-supplied parts.
-
- Thanks for the suggestions.

- Roger,
-
- Thanks for the suggestion. How do I get the new HIMEM.SYS v2.70. Will
- MS be distributing it via BBSs? (I've tried on several occasions to
- call them. After 10-15 minutes long-distance at daytime rates, I've
- given up being on hold.)
-
- I've seen one more bizarre example of my freezeup problem. The system
- froze while a batch file was running. The BAT was executing a program
- that was trying to write to the screen (let's say STDOUT to be more
- precise.) The cursor seemed to be "bouncing" rapidly between columns 1
- and 2, as though bumping up against something.
-
- As with my other freezeup situations, I was able to reboot from the
- keyboard.
-
- What is striking about this latest problem is that I had not yet run
- Windows since powering up the system. I had, however, done some disk
- I/O. So HIMEM.SYS and/or SMARTDRV.SYS was the culprit. (I'm sure of
- that because I had none of these d--- problems until I first installed

-

- Roger,
-
- HIMEM.SYS v2.70 did NOT fix my problem. However, I can now reproduce
- the freezeup, with either V2.60 or V2.70 of HIMEM.SYS:
-
- Using the "fixed" version 4.5 of Norton Utilities, the following
- sequence fails:
-
- si c:
- ds ne
-
- This fails because the second command doesn't display a "sorted ..."
- message. If I remove both HIMEM.SYS and SMARTDRV.SYS but change nothing
- else in my CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, then the sequence above
- doesn't fail. If I add back my old disk cache routine, Golden Bow
- VCache, the above sequence doesn't fail either.
-
- I don't have the final answer yet, but at least I feel that I can now
- run some tests to identify the incompatibility. Once I do that, I may
- just write up a report and upload it to many BBSs, as an example of how
- finicky Win 3.0 is.

- I have a suggestion from one of my "clients" has HAS to run an
- ill-behaved eextended memory using program. He would like to see
- command line parameters that would specify the exact memory area to be
- used by HyperDisk - it would help hime fit it in around the nasty one
- that he HAS to use.

- Have you had any reports of problems using HYPERDKX.EXE and QEMM 5.11?
- I was using both of these programs last night, and after I ran GEnie's
- Aladdin program, something trashed several files on my hard drive.
- I've never had this problem running HYPER386 with Windows 3's HIMEM.SYS.
- I think I'm just about ready to delete QEMM and DESQview from my system!

- HyperDisk should work fine on your J5100. The only problem I know
- about is with the diskette change logic when running under Hihon DOS
- 3.0+. You will have to select /OC in order for HyperDisk to properly
- detect the change of a diskette. I should have the program text and
- manuals translated to Nihon go soon. Anata-wa Nihon go ga hanase-
- masu-ka? I lived in Nagoya for almost a year, my son, was two years
- old then, he still thinks he is Nippon gin and wants to ride a hiko-ki
- back to Nihon.

- HyperKey and HyperScreen should be available in shareware after January.
- I am moving to Tennessee and have decided to hold their release until I
- have new phone numbers for HyperWare. HyperKey and HyperScreen can be
- registered individually or altogether in the SpeedKit ($50.00
- non-commercial). Hopefully, in the January releases, you will be able
- to upgrade a registered version of any HyperWare product from a locally
- downloaded shareware copy. This will make updating almost free (No KKD
- bills and I can remember those most clearly! For me sometimes
- Hachi-man en!)
-
- Thanks again,

- I hope not! I use Lantastic all the time here at HyperWare. It is how
- I'm answering your question right now! You can use it with the
- re-director and the sever just fine. Do you use WD8013 controllers? If
- so I have some additional tips to add speed to your system. There is one
- short side, you can not cache shared floppy drives on a sever.

- Yes. I have also had some problems with QEMM386. They are very
- infrequent and non-repeatable and I have been tring to collect data to
- understand the conditions before I contact QD. I know for certain only
- one bug in QEMM386, if you have a Chips & Tech. 302 memory mapper you
- will need the patch.
-
- Sorry you are having problems, I will try find a solution.

- I registered Ver. 4.03 from you and it's great. Except for the
- EXEPACK bug it ran with absolutely no problems on a 386.
- Then I d/l'd 4.11 the other day, and the machine locks up loading
- DesqView. It runs fine until attempting to load DV, but hangs at that
- point. A BRS is fine; three fingers demolish the CMOS data.
- I tried it on a V20 (no DV) and had no other problems; on the V20 it's
- hooking INT 15, 19, and 46h; on the 386 it's hooking 13, 15, and 19h.
- DV also wants 15 and 19, but manages to get 4.03 out of the way.
- This is appears to be DV-dependent. Ver. 4.11 has been removed, 4.03
- restored, but I couldn't find any other confilicts.
