  92.       INTRODUCTION
  93.  
  94.       PM File & Disk Utility (PMFDU) was designed and written to 
  95.       provide a useful set of utilities for manipulating disk files
  96.       and directories on computer systems using IBM OS/2.  PMFDU 
  97.       requires version 1.2 or greater of the IBM OS/2 or its 
  98.       equivalent.  PMFDU is a Presentation Manager (PM) program which 
  99.       provides a consistant user interface for interacting with the 
  100.       program.

  102.       PMFDU is distributed as a "shareware" program.  This means that
  103.       you are encouraged to try the program before you register your 
  104.       copy.  You are also encouraged to provide unregistered copies of
  105.       the programs to your friends and colleagues.  If you find the 
  106.       program useful and decided to keep a copy, you must pay a
  107.       registration fee.

  109.       REGISTRATION INFORMATION

  111.       PMFDU is a copyrighted program of ASH Software, Inc. and is
  112.       protected by copyright law.  If you obtained a copy of PMFDU
  113.       from a friend, a shareware disk vendor, a bulletin board, or an
  114.       on-line computer service, you have an unregistered copy.  You
  115.       are authorized, and encouraged, to use this program for a period
  116.       not to exceed 14 days.  If you wish to continue using PMFDU 
  117.       after this time has expired, you must register and pay for your
  118.       copy of the program.  The registration fee is $35 for a single
  119.       copy of PMFDU.  This fee entitles you to:
  120.       
  121.            A disk with a registered copy of the latest version of
  122.            PMFDU;
  123.  
  124.            A copy of CLFDU, which is a command line version of the
  125.            program.

  127.            a disk with an unregistered copy of PMFDU for distribution
  128.            to friends and colleagues;

  151.       UNREGISTERED COPIES:  Unregistered copies of PMFDU are 
  152.       distributed to allow you to try the program before you actually
  153.       pay for it.  These copies are not "free" or "public domain" 
  154.       copies and remain the copyrighted property of ASH Software, Inc.
  155.       You are granted the right to use the program at no charge for a
  156.       trial period not to exceed 14 days.  If you wish to continue
  157.       using the program after this period, you must register and pay
  158.       for your copy of the program.  If you do not wish to register
  159.       your copy, you must cease using the program.  You may, however,
  160.       keep copies of the program to share with others.

  171.       of computers covered under a site, corporate, or network 
  172.       license.  You may install PMFDU on a computer connected to a
  173.       network provided there is no possibility that more than the
  174.       licensed number of users can use the program at any one time.

  176.       BACKUP COPIES:  You may make as many copies of the registered 
  177.       copy of PMFDU as you need for normal backup purposes.  You may 
  178.       make an unlimited number of copies of the unregistered PMFDU 
  179.       and give them to others provided you include all of the files
  180.       distributed with the unregistered copy.  You may not give copies
  181.       of the registered version to any other person for any reason.

  183.       DISTRIBUTION:  PMFDU can be distributed via individual copies of
  184.       the unregistered version to friends and colleagues, via bulletin
  185.       boards, via online computer services or via a shareware disk
  186.       vendor provided no charge is made beyond a nominal copying and
  187.       handling charge.  PMFDU, or any part therof, may not be included
  188.       with any other product nor can it be offered as an incentive to
  189.       purchase any other product without the express written consent
  190.       of ASH Software, Inc.

  192.       USE:  PMFDU is an extremely powerful program.  Every attempt has
  193.       been made to protect your computer software and data from damage 
  194.       by PMFDU, however improper use of the program may result in the 
  195.       loss of computer software and data.  The user assumes full
  196.       responsibility for chosing to use PMFDU to accomplish your
  197.       intended goals.  ASH Software, Inc. limits its warranty to
  198.       replacement of a defective disk or manual.

  211.       LIMITED WARRANTY:  ASH Software, Inc. warrants, for a period of
  212.       90 days, to registered owners of PMFDU that the program will
  213.       operate in accordance with the documentation provided and that
  214.       the diskette and manual will be free from physical defects which
  215.       cause them to be unusable in normal use.  ASH Software, Inc.
  216.       will, at its sole discretion, repair or replace any defective
  217.       items or refund the purchase price of PMFDU, provided such
  218.       defect is the fault of ASH Software, Inc. and not the result of
  219.       misuse or abuse.   The above refund, repair, or replacement is
  220.       the sole remedy for any defects, documentation errors, or
  221.       program errors.  Under no circumstances will ASH Software, Inc.
  222.       be responsible for any other costs or damages whatsoever 
  223.       resulting from your use of PMFDU or your failure to read,
  224.       understand, or follow the instructions provided in the 
  225.       documentation.  ASH Software, Inc. MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES,
  226.       EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE
  227.       WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
  228.       PURPOSE.  ASH Software's warranty is expressly limited to the
  229.       cost of replacement of any defective disk, manual, or program
  230.       provided with PMFDU.

  270.       INSTALLATION
  271.  
  272.       PMFDU is as easy to install as it is to use.  There are only two
  273.       files to copy, the on-line help file and the executable file.  
  274.       If you have OS/2 v1.2 or greater you should use the PMFDU.HLP
  275.       and the PMFDU13.EXE files.  If you have OS/2 v2.0 or greater,
  276.       you should use the PMFDU.HLP and the PMFDU20.EXE.  All that is
  277.       required is to copy both files to the same directory on your hard
  278.       disk and to rename the executeable file to PMFDU.EXE.  It may be
  279.       desirable to place these files in one of the directories pointed
  280.       to by your "PATH" statement, but it is not necessary.  Once you
  281.       have copied and renamed the files, installation is complete and
  282.       the program is ready to use.

  285.       OVERVIEW
  286.  
  287.       Once you have the program installed, you can execute the program 
  288.       in one of several methods.  You can run the program directly by
  289.       typing the name or you can use the "START" command to start a
  290.       copy of PMFDU running.  You can also include a "START" command
  291.       in your "STARTUP.CMD" file so that a copy of the program is run
  292.       each time you boot your system.  Regardless of the method you
  293.       use to execute the program, it will initially appear as a
  294.       program icon.

  296.       PMFDU makes extensive use of "on-line" help.  Context sensitive 
  297.       help is contantly available by pressing the "F1" key or by
  298.       pressing one of the various help buttons.  Help can also be
  299.       obtained by selecting the help menu.  This is the prefered
  300.       method of obtaining assistance as the "shareware" version of the
  301.       program does not include a manual.

  303.       PMFDU provides a number of useful functions for manipulating 
  304.       files and directories on your disk(s) and diskettes.  The
  305.       "File" menu contains functions for manipulating and searching 
  306.       files.  The functions provided are:
  307.  
  308.            "Text Search" provides the capability to search a group of
  309.            files for the occurance of a given string of text.  If the
  310.            file contains the text, the file will be included in the
  311.            list box.
  312.  
  313.            "File Search" provides the capability to locate a file, or
  314.            group of files on your hard disk(s) or diskette.  Files
  315.            which match the scope and file specification will be 
  316.            included in the list box.

  318.            "Delete Files" provides the capability to delete a file, or
  319.            group of files on your hard disk(s) or diskette.  Files
  320.            which match the scope and file specification will be 
  321.            included in the list box to be deleted if requested.  You
  322.            should exercise great caution when using this function!

  329.            "Attributes" provides the capability to alter the
  330.            attributes of a file, or group of files.  Files which
  331.            match the scope and file specification will be included in
  332.            the list box to be altered according to your selection.

  334.       The "Disk" menu provides functions for manipulating entire
  335.       directories.  The functions provided are:
  336.  
  337.            "Statistics" provides information with respect to the
  338.            entire disk or diskette as well as information about a
  339.            particular directory.  The directory information will
  340.            contain information for both the directory and all
  341.            directories encapsulated by the base directory.
  342.

  344.            "Delete Tree" provides the capability to prune, or
  345.            remove, an entire directory.  All files in all
  346.            encapsulated directories are removed as well as the
  347.            directory itself.  You should exercise great care when
  348.            using this function!

  350.       As you will see, PMFDU is a powerful program and great care
  351.       should be exercised when using this program.  With a few
  352.       commands, it is possible to erase the entire contents of a hard
  353.       disk!  The user is cautioned to pay close attention to what the
  354.       program is requesting.  If in doubt, press "F1" to obtain help
  355.       or "Exit" the function until you can ascertain what the function
  356.       is going to do.  PMFDU always works from the contents of the
  357.       list box.  It is imperative that you examine the entire contents
  358.       of the list box BEFORE you instruct PMFDU to complete the
  359.       requested function.  The list box will contain the files or
  360.       directories which are going to be operated upon by the 
  361.       subsequent operation.

  364.       SUMMARY
  365.  
  366.       Used properly, PMFDU adds capabilities and functionality which
  367.       are needed for pruning directories, removing unwanted groups of
  368.       files, searching for the location of files, and searching for
  369.       text strings within groups of files.  ASH Software, Inc. would
  370.       welcome your comments on PMFDU as we continually strive to
  371.       improve the product and its functionality.  We can be reached by
  372.       any of the methods shown above.

  374.       For those who prefer using the OS/2 command line, we have
  375.       developed a version of this program called Command Line Fixed
  376.       Disk Utility (CLFDU).  While this program does not have all the
  377.       capabilities of PMFDU, it provides very similar tools for those
  378.       who work from the command line.  CLFDU is automatically sent to
  379.       all registered users of PMFDU.
