  2. hippopotamus trot toward her.

  5. decidedly friendly manner.

  7. Rather rudely, the hippopotamus
  8. seemed to ignore the little girl,
  9. carrying on straight past her.

  11. The hippopotamus paused in his
  12. stride. He turned around and
  13. said in a tiny, squeaky voice,
  14. "Err, good day little girl".

  16. "Why did you ignore me?" asked
  17. Alice in her impetuous voice.

  19. The hippo fumed at Alice, furious
  20. at her interrogation.

  22. Alice, noticing the yellow name
  23. badge on the hippo's lapel, spoke
  24. softly: "That's okay Hugh. I'm
  25. quite shy myself."
