  1. CLIPBOARD QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

  4. Problem: Copying, cutting or pasting using the clipboard is
  5.          slow with Windows Applications.  This is
  6.          particulary noticable in MS Excel and other
  7.          Windows applications.
  8. .
  9. Answer:  Most applications that copy information to the
  10.          clipboard copy data in multiple formats.  In the
  11.          case of Excel, 16 different formats.  When the
  12.          Windows clipboard is public, the computer must do
  13.          additional conversion of data to the OS2 clipboard
  14.          The solution to this is that if the customer can
  15.          make the Windows clipboard private, the speed of
  16.          cutting and pasting will be similar to that of
  17.          DOS/Windows.  The only problem with this is that
  18.          anything copied from the Windows session cannot be
  19.          pasted to OS2 unless clipboard data is exported and
  20.          when trying to paste data copied from an OS2
  21.          session, another WINOS2 session or a DOS Session,
  22.          data must be imported.  The only way to make a
  23.          WINOS2 seamless session private is to make a
  24.          permanent change removing 3 ";clipbrd" statements
  25.          from the WINOS2 SYSTEM.INI file.
  26.          The performance issue is being addressed.  This
  27.          will be made available at a undetermined future
  28.          date.
  29. Problem: Graphics copied to clipboard from OS2 cannot be
  30.          copied to a Windows application or graphics copied
  31.          to the WINOS2 clipboard from a Windows application
  32.          cannot be copied to an OS2 application.

  34. Answer:  This is normally a lack in about 50% of Windows
  35.          applications.  Older Windows applications only
  36.          support DDBs (Device Dependent Bitmaps), while OS2
  37.          always creates or uses DIBs (Device Independent
  38.          Bitmaps).  Since the format of DDBs and DIBs are
  39.          different, Windows applications that only support
  40.          DDBs can have problems in copying data to and from
  41.          the public clipboard.  Because some Windows
  42.          applications may handle other formats than DDBs,
  43.          all Windows applications that do not handle DIBs
  44.          may not exhibit this problem.

  46. Problem: DDE  or OLE does not work correctly for Windows
  47.          applications under WINOS2.
  48. .
  49. Answer:  Some Windows applications use special Windows 3.1
  50.          DLL (Dynamic link library) for DDE and OLE.  These
  51.          DLLs are backward compatible to Windows 3.0 and
  52.          WINOS2.  Make sure that DDEML.DLL, OLECLI.DLL, and
  53.          OLESRV.DLL are in the  OS2 MDOS WINOS2 directory or
  54.          in the path.  If you installed OS/2-2.0 on top of
  55.          DOS/Windows, these files may be in the old
  56.          directory.  Otherwise, they normally can be copied
  57.          from the installation disks of the Windows
  58.          application that experienced the problem.
  59.          For applications where DDE worked for DOS/WINDOWS,
  60.          they should also work correctly under WINOS2.  Some
  61.          Windows applications did not support DDE very well,
  62.          therefore if you are experiencing DDE problems with
  63.          a specific application, call the application
  64.          company regarding DDE Support.

  66. Problem: OLE does not work between OS2 applications and
  67.          WINOS2.

  69. Answer:  OLE is not supported under Presentation Manager.
  70.          Therefore, OLE will not work outside WINOS2.

  72. Problem: OS2 Clipboard does not recognize data that may be
  73.          in private formats.

  75. Answer:  Even though the clipboard does not display or show
  76.          data being available in the OS2 clipboard, it may
  77.          be available to applications that support that
  78.          private format.
