  3. When your phone is just sitting there doing nothing, the voltage through the 
  4. phone line is about 20 volts AC (Alternate Current). When someone calls and 
  5. the phone starts ringing, the voltage jumps enough for the bell to work 
  6. (about 48 volts) which tells Ma Bell to stand by if you should pick up so they
  7. can bill you. When you eventually pick up the phone voltage drops to 10 volts
  8. and the billing starts. What a black box does is it keeps the voltage at 36
  9. volts therefore the incoming caller never gets billed (INGENIOUS!).

  11. The original black box was created by an ex-Bell employee who went by the name
  12. "Captian Crunch". He got his name from those little whistles you got in boxes 
  13. of Captian Crunch Cereal Because they emitted a tone that sounded like a pay
  14. phone. Captian Crunch announced his official retirement from phreaking after 
  15. being released from a California jail on two counts of using blue boxes (the 
  16. ones operators use).

  18. Materials: 1) A 36 volt zendr diode
  19.            2) A ceramic or mylar
  20.               capacitor of 0.1 micro-
  21.               farad.
  22.            3) A electrolytic capacitor
  23.               of 1.0 microfarad.

  25. You can get all these parts at your local Radio Shack.

  28. First you have to open your phone up. You do this be gently removing the two
  29. screws on the bottom of the phone and lifing the cover up slowly. You should 
  30. notice three wires coming in from the back of the phone, a green, red, and
  31. yellow most of the time though they can differ. Don't worry about the canlow 
  32. wire, we will not need it to do this. You will need to find the more positive 
  33. of the remaining two wires (almost always the green). Now connect the banded 
  34. end of the zener diode to the more positive of these two wires. Now connect 
  35. the other end of the diode to the red wire 'in-series.' You have just completed 
  36. the first step. For the second step you need a ceramic or mylar capacitor of 
  37. 0.1 micro-farad. You connect this 'in parallel' across the diode. This is 
  38. needed to allow the diode to pass voice singnals. Now for the final step, take 
  39. your electrolytic capacitor of up to 1 micro-farad with its + end connected
  40. to the banded end of the diode and the other end should be connect to the 
  41. anode end of the diode. 
  42. If the phone rings for about a half hour they will think something is wrong 
  43. and bill you anyway. When using a black box your phone will continue to ring
  44. even though you picked up. You have to make a switch to connect to one of the 
  45. ringer wires that will shut it off.
