  11. 2)  Ways to use different font sizes

  13.     a) ALT-Rearrange-Video displays font size choices in Desqview
  14.     
  15.     b) Setting the program itself to a certain font size should be 
  16.            respected in Desqview, but you may need to adjust Maximum
  17.            Height to an appropriate number of lines or Text Pages to
  18.            2 or greater, but if Text Pages is set to greater than 1,
  19.            Maximum Height is limited to 25.  It sometimes works better
  20.            to set Text Pages to 2, and sometimes Maximum Height
  21.        set to the higher number works better.  These settings are
  22.            in Change a Program, Advanced Options.

  24. 3)  Ways programs write to the screen
  25.  
  26.     a) Directly to Video Memory (Write directly to the screen)
  27.  
  28.         b) Use BIOS to write to screen (Screen writing managed by BIOS)
  29.  
  30. 4)  Which programs write directly to the screen

  32.     a) All Graphics Programs
  33.  
  34.         b) Approximately half of all text programs
  35.  
  36. 5)  What the screen can display at any one time
  37.  
  38.     a) One text font

  40.     b) Any number of graphic fonts and graphic images

  43. 6)  How to tell if a program writes directly to the screen
  44.  
  45.     a) If it's a graphic program, it writes directly
  46.  
  47.         b) Set Writes text directly to the screen? to N on the Change
  48.            a Program menu to N.  Now start the program and try to put
  49.            it in a small window.  If it writes outside of the Desqview
  50.            borders,  that means the program writes directly and Writes
  51.            Text Directly... must be set to Y.

  53. 7)  When you need to set Virtualize Text and Graphics to Y
  54.  
  55.     a) Virtualization is only for Direct Screen Write programs
  56.  
  57.     b) You only need to Virtualize if you want the progam to stay
  58.        running while it's in the background or stay running while
  59.        it's in a small window.
  60.  
  61.     c) Virtualizing slows programs down, so if your program doesn't
  62.        need to stay running in the background or in a small window,
  63.            you would want Virtualize set to N.
  64.  
  65.     d) Virtualizing requires Expanded Memory.  If the machine is
  66.        low on Expanded memory,  the screen could behave poorly
  67.        when a Virtualized window is displayed.
  68.  
  69.         e) If a program is not a Direct Screen Writer, Writes Text
  70.            Directly and Virtualize should both be set to N.
  71.        Desqview can run these programs in a small window and in
  72.        the background without any special adjustments.

  74. 8)  Switching Video Modes
  75.  
  76.     a) When switching from a window that is using a Graphic mode to
  77.        a window that is using the 25 line Text mode, the Text program 
  78.        will sometimes display 25 lines on a 30 line screen.  When 
  79.        this happens, the bottom 5 lines of the screen will display
  80.        the program that is in the background.  Because there is no 25 
  81.        line Graphic mode, Desqview has to do it this way.  When the 
  82.        screen is in a graphic mode, Desqview has to display Text 
  83.        programs as a Graphic also.  In graphic mode only 30 and 60
  84.        line fonts are available.

  86.     b) One way to run a Graphic program and still have your Text
  87.        program display in a 25 line font is to do ALT-Rearrange-Hide
  88.        before switching away from the Graphic program. This will
  89.        hide it from the screen and allow the Monitor to switch to 
  90.        the 25 line Text font.  A hidden program that writes directly 
  91.        to the screen (all Graphics programs) will not be able to run 
  92.        while it is hidden.

  94.     c) Another way to use a Graphic program and switch to a 25 line
  95.            Text program is to run the Desqview Setup program and set
  96.            "display Text and Graphics at the same time?" to N.  Now
  97.        when you switch from the Graphic program to the Text program, 
  98.        Desqview will put a Curtain over your Graphic program and 
  99.        allow the Monitor to return to the Text mode.  Virtualization 
  100.        will not be possible when this option is selected.

  102. 9)  Extended VGA Modes
  103.  
  104.     a) The highest resolution in the IBM VGA Specification is 640x480.
  105.  
  106.     b) Some VGA cards have the capability of displaying resolutions
  107.        of 700X420, 800X600, and 1024X768.  These modes are not
  108.        standardized and most of the manufacturers of these cards 
  109.        impliment these resolutions differently - consequently
  110.        Desqview cannot fully support these modes.

  112.     c) Desqview will support 640X480 in that it can Save and Restore
  113.        screen when programs are switched away from and back to.  It
  114.        can also Virtualize this resolution, meaning it will allow a
  115.        'Direct Screen Write' program to stay running in a small 
  116.        window or in the background without bleeding through the
  117.        foreground window.

  119.     d) Desqview can Save and Restore 800X600 on some VGA cards if
  120.            Graphic Pages in Change a Program is set to 4, but it
  121.            cannot Virtualize it.  It's sometimes O.K. to set Runs in
  122.            Background to Y and not Virtualize for purposes of printing
  123.        in the background if the program doesn't do screen updates 
  124.            or only does minor screen updates while it's printing.
