  15. The "Protection level" field of Change a Program can be changed 
  16. on any machine running DESQview, but only becomes active on 386 
  17. machines.
  18.  
  19. Protection level uses the paging capability of the 386 to trap 
  20. programs which perform operations outside of their normal memory 
  21. space or which use interrupts in unconventional and potentially 
  22. destructive ways.  Such operations could be considered 
  23. "ill-behaved", and might be symptomatic of programs which are in 
  24. the process of crashing the system.

  26. Protection level has no ability to correct such ill-behavior on 
  27. the part of programs.  It exists in order to protect the rest of 
  28. the system from a crashing program and to report on what the 
  29. program did.

  31. It is also common that programs that generate "Protection" errors 
  32. are doing things that may be non-destructive and legitimate.  
  33. DESQview has no way to evaluate the specific reasons why a 
  34. program may have written outside its memory space, only that it 
  35. has done so.  Normally, for programs that have proven to be 
  36. reliable, you should keep Protection level set to zero.  Higher 
  37. numbers, particularly 2 and 3 will tend to slow programs down due 
  38. to the overhead of trapping memory access outside the program's 
  39. partition.

  41. Protection level is primarily provided for use with programs that 
  42. have proven to be unreliable while running in DESQview.  Setting 
  43. protection level for these programs should usually prevent them 
  44. from bringing down the system and the messages produced when the 
  45. protection error is trapped may serve to suggest to the developer 
  46. of the program what they might be doing wrong.

  48. The specifics of the program operations that are trapped at 
  49. different levels of protection are proprietary to Quarterdeck, 
  50. but in general, the higher the number, the more "ill-behaved" 
  51. operations will be trapped and examined.
