  4. ORIGINS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR: A brief summary

  6. The origins of the Second World War were rooted deeply in the results
  7. and greviances real or imagined of the victors and vanquished of the
  8. First World war. They may be summarised as follows:-

  10. A) Germany`s treatment through the Versailles Treaty of 1919 left
  11.    her with manifold grievances which made the rise of Hitler`s
  12.    National-socialism much easier.

  14. B) German expansionism towards the East based on the Nazi principle
  15.    of "Lebensraum nach osten" - living space in the east, together
  16.    with Stalin`s own aggressive Russian communist policy.
  17.    
  18. C) The suspicion of France towards Germany which made any kind of
  19.    lasting raproachment very difficult.

  21. D) The vacilliation of the French and British over Czechoslovakia
  22.    the Rhineland and Austria which made Hitler feel that no real
  23.    threat of war would be brought about by his settling accounts
  24.    with Poland.

  26. E) A system of interlocking alliances reminiscent of the First 
  27.    World War which drew in numerous nations.

  29. F) The break up of the Austro-Hungarian empire which led to resurgent
  30.    nationalist forces throughout Eastern Europe.

  32. G) The expansionist policy of Italy and the spread of conflict by
  33.    Mussolini`s attempts to build an Italian African empire.

  35. H) Confusing Foreign Policy by the British which clouded the real
  36.    issues of peace and war.
