  2.  IBM ThinkPad Feature Program for Windows NT
  3.  ============================================

  5.  This documents describes how to install IBM ThinkPad Feature Programs on
  6.  Windows NT and provides some technical information using this Utility Program.
  7.  Before installing this program, read carefully how to use this program.
  8.  
  9.  1.0 Installation
  10.  -----------------

  12.  To install this program, follow the instruction below.
  13.  
  14.   1-1 Start Windows NT (V3.51 or higher) on your ThinkPad
  15.  
  16.   1-2 Insert this Utility Diskette into your floppy drive (A:) and go to
  17.       Windows NT "File Manager". Select drive A on the File Manager menu.
  18.  
  19.   1-3 Double click "INSTDRV.EXE" to run this program. ThinkPad Feature NT
  20.       device driver is installed in your system.
  21.       When this driver is installed, following message appears on the NT
  22.       DOS screen session.
  23.  
  24.       "Installation complete for ThinkPad Feature NT driver.
  25.        Shutdown and restart Windows NT.
  26.        Run INSTALLN to install ThinkPad Feature program after Windows NT
  27.        is started."

  29.       Note: If you have already installed old version ThinkPad Features and
  30.             running Fuel Gauge program, close this program before installing
  31.             the device driver. If not, "DLL load error" message will appears.
  32.  
  33.   1-4 Shutdown and restart Windows NT. Go to Windows NT "File Manager" and
  34.       select drive A. Double click "INSTALLN.EXE" to proceed to install the
  35.       ThinkPad Feature program. Follow the instruction appears on the screen.

  37.   1-5 Logoff Windows NT and log on again to start using ThinkPad Feature
  38.       program. Fuel Gauge program icon will be automatically created and
  39.       will become active on the screen.

  42.  2.0 Using ThinkPad Features
  43.  -----------------------------------------
  44.  
  45.  This section describes how to use the ThinkPad Features, Fule Gauge Program
  46.  and Personalization Editor. Refere to ThinkPad Features Online Help for the
  47.  general information. This section contains some unique information associated
  48.  with Windows NT environment which are not included in the Online Help.
  49.  
  50.  2-1 Fuel Gauge program
  51.  ----------------------

  53.  On the fuel gauge screen, clicking the "suspend icon" is defined as the
  54.  following manner depends on which ThinkPad you are using:
  55.  
  56.   ThinkPad 755CE/755CSE/755CX/755CD/755CDV/760C/760CD :
  57.  
  58.    Clicking "suspend" icon will make the system going into Stand-by instead of
  59.    going to suspend. Set the system going into suspend mode will cause
  60.    erroneous situation on NT such as delay of Time of day clock during suspend,
  61.    erroneous power down for certain devices after resuming the system.
  62.    To avoid this situation, clicking the suspend icon does not make the system
  63.    going to the suspend state but stays with standby state which makes LCD is
  64.    turned off, HDD stops and CPU in the low speed if there is no busy state
  65.    detected by the system BIOS.

  67.    There is a "hibernation" icon on the same menu but using the hibernation
  68.    function is not recommended because of the same reason of suspend.

  70.   ThinkPad 755C/360C/360CS/370C/345CS:
  71.  
  72.    On these ThinkPad, clicking the "suspend" icon does not work as Standby but
  73.    going to suspend. It is not recommended to use this button to suspend.

  75.    On some ThinkPad, "hibernation" icon appears on the same menu but
  76.    it is not recommended to use because of the same reason of suspend.

  78.  2-2 Suspend/Resume options at Power Mode Setting
  79.  ------------------------------------------------

  81.    If you set "Will not suspend even if LCD is closed" as an option at
  82.    Suspend/Resume options on power mode icon menu, this option is used as
  83.    the following manner on Windows NT environment:

  85.    This option allows not only inhibiting the suspend operation at LCD is
  86.    closed, but also inhibiting ANY suspend condition such as Fn+F4 suspend
  87.    key, suspend selection at battery gauge icon menu, automatic suspend with
  88.    suspend timer and low battery suspend.
  89.  
  90.    To set this mode effective, click this option on the menu and "save" it.
  91.    Then shutdown and restart NT. When you boot NT, this mode becomes effective.

  93.    WARNING:
  94.  
  95.    YOU MUST MANUALLY SHUTDOWN THE SYSTEM WHEN LOW BATTERY CONDITION OCCURS.
  96.    SYSTEM DOES NOT GO TO SUSPEND AUTOMATICALLY AT LOW POWER BATTERY.

  99.  2-3 Inhibiting suspend operation
  100.  --------------------------------

  102.    You can inhibit the automatic timer suspend mode using the "Power" mode
  103.    menu on ThinkPad Feature. Unless you specify "Will not suspend even if
  104.    LCD is closed" option at suspend/resume option, it is required at least
  105.    to set the following power mode in order to avoid going to suspend:

  107.    - Set the "Power Mode" to "Customized"
  108.  
  109.    - Set the "Suspend time" to "0" (disable timer suspend)
  110.  
  111.    Save the above option and set the power mode as "Customized" mode to take
  112.    the change effective.
  113.  
  114.    Disabling automatic suspend will avoid the erroneous situation occurs on
  115.    Windows NT.

  117.  2-4 Others
  118.  ----------

  120.  Although ThinkPad Feature provide you almost the same menu for device mode
  121.  setting, it does not mean that all device are supported under NT.
  122.  For example, enabling Infrared Port by this program does not mean that you
  123.  can use Infrared port. Without installing the necessary device drivers and
  124.  application program, it is not possible to use the infrared port.
  125.  As of today, there is no infrared device drivers/application program run
  126.  on NT. So, setting this port enabled is not meaningful.
  127.  Device mode setting menu does not always provide you the all device can
  128.  be available under Windows NT.
