  1. Mwave Support 2.22 for OS/2 on IBM Thinkpads

  6. This procedure is for the Mwave version 2.22 drivers on the IBM Thinkpad
  7. 755CE/CD/CsE/CV/CDV/CX and 760C/CD/E/ED series machines.  It is designed to
  8. work as is for all versions of OS/2 Warp 3.x and 4.x.
  9.  
  10. Note:  Mwave 2.22 is not supported with any version of OS/2 2.1x.
  11.

  17. Note:  The actual file descriptions listed here may vary from the descriptions
  18.        as posted on the BBS, the ftp site, and the WEB.  The file name, size,
  19.        and date should be exact.
  20.  
  21. The Thinkpad should be placed on AC power and logged off of any network
  22. connections prior to beginning the Mwave installation.  Failure to do so can
  23. cause various inconsistencies in the Mwave installation which will prevent
  24. Mwave from functioning normally.  After successful installation, the Thinkpad
  25. can be run as it was before.
  26.  
  27. Obtain the files from IBM as shown in the following table for the version of
  28. OS/2 and model of Thinkpad being used.  Place the files into a temporary
  29. directory, run each and follow the instructions to create the diskettes as
  30. listed.

  91. ***  System Update Disk ***

  93. Consult the README file on the System Update disk for the respective system
  94. being used and follow the instructions for use.
  95.  
  96.  
  97. ***  Base Multimedia Support ***
  98.  
  99. If Multimedia Software support was not installed during the installation of
  100. OS/2 Warp, then use Selective Install to install the support.  The hardware
  101. selection on the System Configuration page should be 'None'.  For the Thinkpad
  102. 755CD/CDV and 760CD/ED series, CD-ROM support must be present (i.e. support
  103. should have been installed when OS/2 was installed) in the machine during the
  104. install of Multimedia support in order to get a CD Audio object in the
  105. Multimedia folder.  Perform a proper shut down and reboot the system.
  106.  
  107. Note: If the customer has attempted to install the Multimedia support with a
  108.       sound device or if multiple Digital Audio or other icons appear in the
  109.       Multimedia folder, then Multimedia support must be removed completely
  110.       and reinstalled.   Use Selective Uninstall in the System Setup folder to
  111.       remove Multimedia support.
  112.

  114. ***  Thinkpad Features and Mwave Management Device Driver Installation ***
  115.  
  116. Note: If Thinkpad Features for OS/2 have already been installed from base OS/2
  117.       installation, then Step 1 may be skipped.
  118.  
  119.   1. Install the Thinkpad Features for OS/2 using the INSTALL2 program from
  120.      either the Utility diskette 1 v3.32 (755 Series) or the Utility Disk OS/2
  121.      (760 Series). The INSTALL2 program can be run from an OS/2 window.  Remove
  122.      the check on the Install Personalization Editor, select Install, and
  123.      follow the instructions to complete the installation.
  124.  
  125.   2. Go into Device Driver Install from System Setup, insert either the Utility
  126.      diskette 2 v3.32 (755 Series) or the Utility Disk OS/2 (760 Series),
  127.      select Install and choose the Thinkpad System Management Device Driver
  128.      (make sure to HIGHLIGHT this selection).  Perform a proper shut down and
  129.      reboot the system.  Verify that the line:
  130.  
  131.                           BASEDEV=AODBSMD.SYS
  132.  
  133.      is placed in the CONFIG.SYS.  This driver MUST be present in order for
  134.      Mwave to function.  For best results, this line should come before the
  135.      Mwave lines in CONFIG.SYS as shown in the sample CONFIG.SYS on the
  136.      following page.

  139. ***  OS/2 Mwave Support ***
  140.  
  141. Install Mwave support by using the SETUP command from the Thinkpad Mwave OS/2
  142. Disk 1 in an OS/2 window.  After the second disk is read, there should be a
  143. confirmation message: 'OS/2 Mwave Manager Operating System Installed'.  Perform
  144. a proper shut down and reboot.
  145.  
  146. During boot up, there should be a message 'MWAVEDD.SYS (v2.125B)' and an icon
  147. should appear on the Desktop titled "Mwave for OS/2."
  148.  
  149.  
  150. ***  OS/2 Mwave Audio Support ***
  151.  
  152. For OS/2 Warp, install Mwave Audio support (not including MIDI), by using the
  153. SETUP command from the Thinkpad Mwave Audio for OS/2 Warp disk in an OS/2
  154. window. Select the IBM Mwave Adapter (this is the default).  Perform a proper
  155. shut down and reboot the system.

  158. ***  OS/2 Mwave MIDI Support ***
  159.  
  160. For Mwave MIDI support, run the SETUP command from the Thinkpad OS/2 MIDI
  161. Support Disk from an OS/2 window.  For OS/2 for Windows packages (Red Label),
  162. answer 'Yes' to the 'Do you want your Windows MIDI Synthesizer to use this set
  163. of MIDI Samples' prompt.  For all versions of OS/2 Warp, answer 'Yes' to the
  164. to the prompts for OS/2 MIDI samples.  When the program asks for 'Disk 2',
  165. insert Thinkpad MIDI Samples Disk 2.  For 'Disk 3' use MIDI Samples Disk 3 and
  166. so on through all five of the MIDI samples diskettes.
  167.  
  168. Note: If OS/2 Warp is installed on a different partition from DOS/Windows, AND
  169.       OS/2 Warp Blue Label is being used, answer 'No' to the prompt for the
  170.       Windows MIDI samples if no updates to the Native DOS/Windows side are
  171.       desired.

  214. Note that these changes should be in the order shown with the only exception
  215. as noted for the Mwave device to function properly.

  218. ***  Reinstallation of Mwave ***
  219.  
  220. If the Mwave installation becomes damaged and fails to function properly, it
  221. will be necessary to fully remove all Mwave AND Multimedia support prior to
  222. reinstallation. This is necessary to insure a clean reinstall of all features.
  223.  
  224. For OS/2 Warp:
  225.  
  226.    - Edit the CONFIG.SYS and remove all references to \MWAVEOS2.
  227.    - Do a Selective Uninstall of Multimedia support and delete the Multimedia
  228.      and Mwave folders from the Desktop.
  229.    - Shutdown and reboot the system.
  230.    - Use the Drives object to remove the \MMOS2 and \MWAVEOS2 subdirectories.
  231.    - Proceed with the installation as outlined above.
  232.  
  233. WINOS2 Mwave support can be reinstalled independently of OS/2 support, i.e. if
  234. OS/2 Mwave support is working correctly, then it is not necessary to
  235. remove/reinstall OS/2 support in order to reinstall WINOS2 support.  In
  236. general, WINOS2 Mwave support does not need to be removed before it is
  237. reinstalled.
  238.  
  239.  
  240. ***  Miscellaneous Application Considerations ***
  241.  
  242. For FaxWorks for OS/2, the modem should be set up as a Class 2 device.
  243.  
  244. For HyperACCESS, the modem type should be set up as an 'Mwave Windsurfer Comm
  245. Adapter' or 'Mwave 28,800 bps Modem' on whichever port (COM1 or COM2 only) that
  246. the modem is set for.
  247.  
  248. For communications programs that do not have a specific selection for the
  249. Mwave modem, choose a Hayes compatible.
  250.  
  251. For the modem to function with OS/2 telecommunications/fax programs, it must
  252. be initialized with the Mwave Modem icon in the Mwave for OS/2 folder.  The
  253. Discriminator function will also launch.  Both Modem and Discriminator will not
  254. be visible on the Desktop, but will show up in the Window List and can be
  255. switched to if necessary.
  256.  
  257. For IBM LAN Distance to function properly, edit the PROTOCOL.INI file and add
  258. PCMCIA=YES to the [COMx] stanza. If the modem fails to connect successfully to
  259. the LAN Distance server at high speed (19200 to 28800), then it will be
  260. necessary to set the modem speed to 14400 for proper operation.
  261.  
  262. For successful coexistence with IBM TCP/IP, IBM LAN Requestor and/or Netware
  263. Requestor for OS/2; all of the MMOS2 and Mwave drivers, with the exception of
  264. the MWAVEVDD.SYS driver, should come after the TCP/IP lines in the CONFIG.SYS
  265. file.
  266.  
  267. For CD audio on the 755CD/CDV and 760CD/ED to function, the Auxiliary Control
  268. must be running from the Mwave for OS/2 folder.  This is not necessary if the
  269. CD is set for Digital Transfer.
  270.  
  271. If Audio is playing and an incoming telephone signal is detected by the modem,
  272. then the Mwave Manager will terminate the Audio automatically to free up the
  273. the necessary Mwave resources for the Discriminator/Modem.  Audio should
  274. resume after the Modem is through with its process (telephone, FAX, or Modem).
  275.  
  276. It is possible to use a PCMCIA modem and the DSP modem at the same time.  For
  277. best results, install OS/2 with the Infrared enabled as COM1, Serial disabled,
  278. and the DSP modem at COM2 (defaults).  Use the Thinkpad Features to disable
  279. Infrared and Serial.  Install PCMCIA support and select PCMCIA Modem/FAX as
  280. the device.  The  PCMCIA modem will show up as COM1 to applications.  It is not
  281. possible to use the Serial ports or the Infrared in this configuration due to
  282. interrupt conflicts.

  285. ***  WINOS2 Mwave Support ***
  286.  
  287. For OS/2 Warp for Windows (Red label):
  288.  
  289.    Reboot the system back into native DOS, start Windows and run the SETUP
  290.    program on the Thinkpad Mwave for Windows Disk 1.  Follow the instructions
  291.    and install all three disks. Restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
  292.  
  293. For all other versions of OS/2 Warp 3.x and 4.x:
  294.  
  295.    Run the SETUP program on the Thinkpad Mwave for Windows Disk 1 and follow
  296.    the instructions. Make sure to run the SETUP program from a WINOS2 Full
  297.    Screen session for best results.
  298.  
  299. The following two lines should be added/appended in the AUTOEXEC.BAT in the
  300. root of the bootable drive:
  301.

  306. Note: If it becomes necessary to use Selective Install to reinstall WINOS2
  307.       support, these two lines will need to be manually added back to the
  308.       AUTOEXEC.BAT for Mwave to function in WINOS2 sessions.
  309.  
  310. For MIDI support on all versions of OS/2 Warp, run the SETUP program on the
  311. Thinkpad Mwave Windows MIDI Support Disk.  Select 'Complete MIDI Sample
  312. Install'.  The specified path should be the same as used for the OS/2
  313. MIDI samples installed in the previous steps, this is:
  314.  
  315.          C:\MWAVE\SAMPLES\MIDIFULL
  316.  
  317. by default.   Answer 'Yes' to the prompts to have the OS2 and WIN-OS2 Mwave
  318. MIDI Synthesizers to use this set of MIDI Samples.  If MIDI samples were
  319. installed under OS/2, then select 'Cancel' when prompted for MIDI Samples
  320. Disk 2.  Otherwise, when the program asks for 'Disk 2', insert Thinkpad MIDI
  321. Samples Disk 1. For 'Disk 3'  use MIDI Samples Disk 2 and so on through all
  322. five MIDI samples diskettes.
  323.  
  324. The first use of MIDI from the Media Player will give a warning 'This file may
  325. not play correctly with the default MIDI setup'.  Check the 'Don't display
  326. this warning in the future' box and continue.
  327.  
  328. For WINOS2 sessions, the modem will function reliably with telecommunications
  329. programs only.  The FaxWorks for Windows (Callcenter) will work reliably under
  330. WINOS2.  FaxWorks for OS/2 included in the Bonus Pak for OS/2 Warp works fine
  331. with WINOS2 applications for faxing.  FaxWorks PRO for OS/2 also works.
