  1. Installation of OS/2 Warp version 4.0 on Thinkpad 760

  6. This procedure is for installing OS/2 Warp version 4.0 on the IBM Thinkpad 760
  7. series machines. This includes the 'C', the 'L', and the 'E' series machines.
  8.  
  9. This procedure is for basic OS/2 installation and operation only.  Enhanced
  10. features such as Mwave and MPEG playback are addressed in seperate procedures
  11. from this document.
  12.

  17. Note:  The actual file descriptions listed here may vary from the descriptions
  18. as posted on the BBS, the ftp site, and the WEB.  The file name, size, and date
  19. should be exact.

  22. The Thinkpad should be placed on AC power prior to beginning the installation.
  23. Failure to do so can cause various inconsistencies in the installation which
  24. will prevent the system from functioning normally.

  27. *** Preliminary Setup ***

  29. Obtain the following files from IBM for the Thinkpad being used, run each from
  30. a temporary directory and follow the instructions to create the diskettes as
  31. listed.

  58. desired during Thinkpad Features installation.

  61. *** CD-ROM Considerations ***
  62.  
  63. The Thinkpad 760CD/LD/ED/ELD has a port on the back of the unit which will
  64. allow attachment of the floppy drive externally using IBM part 66G3618.  Both
  65. the floppy drive and the CD-ROM drive must be attached to the machine in order
  66. to install from CD-ROM.  The floppy and CD-ROM drives can not be hot-swapped
  67. during installation.
  68.  
  69. Non-CD Thinkpad 760 models can be installed via CD-ROM mounted in an IBM dock
  70. station.

  73. *** Installation ***
  74.  
  75. Consult the README file on the Thinkpad System Update diskette for the
  76. Thinkpad being used and follow the instructions for use.
  77.  
  78. Boot the Thinkpad from the Installation diskettes and proceed through the
  79. first part of the installation.
  80.  
  81. After the Thinkpad re-boots to the System Configuration Screen, select VGA for
  82. the video display (the installation will auto-detect a Trident 8900, this will
  83. not work). For the 760C and 760L series, choose Thinkpad 755CE/CsE for PCMCIA
  84. support.  For the 760E series, chose No Support for PCMCIA support (this is the
  85. default).
  86.  
  87. For the 760L/LD and 760EL/ELD machines, select Multimedia Device Support and
  88. change to Port Address for the ESS 688 device to 240.  For the Thinkpad
  89. 760CD/LD/ED/ELD models, select the Thinkpad 755CD, TEAC CD-40E for CD-ROM
  90. support.  Select OK from the System Configuration Screen and proceed with the
  91. installation of desired software components.
  92.  
  93. Note:  The ESS 688 driver may give an error on re-boot if the device was not
  94.        previously set to Port Address 240.  Ignore the error and proceed with
  95.        the installation.  Use the Thinkpad Features to set the device to 240
  96.        at the end of the installation.

  99. *** LAN Network Support ***
  100.  
  101.  
  102. Note:  This section is for LAN connected systems only.  If only the Internet
  103. Connection via modem is required, then see the next section on 'Internet
  104. Connection via Modem'.
  105.  
  106. For networking support installation, consult the network administrator for
  107. client selection.  Assuming the common configuration of both LAN Requestor and
  108. TCP/IP support:
  109.  
  110.    1. Select 'File and Print Client' for OS/2 LAN Requestor and Peer support.
  111.  
  112.    2. Select 'TCP/IP Services' for TCP/IP support.
  113.  
  114.  Note:  Eliminate Step 1 if only TCP/IP support is required, and vice versa.
  115.  
  116.  Select 'Next' to proceed to the 'Welcome to Configuration' panel.
  117.  
  118.  For the File and Print Client:
  119.  
  120.    1. Select the 'File and Print Sharing Services' and from the configuration
  121.       panel, select the installation drive to install the File and Print Client
  122.       to.  Fill in the Workstation name, the Workstation description, and the
  123.       Domain name as supplied by the network administrator.  'LAN Server
  124.       Administration' and 'Install Sharing' are checked by default.  'Delete
  125.       user ID database (NET.ACC)' is not necessary unless instructed to do so
  126.       by the network administrator.

  128.    2. Select 'Network Adapters and Protocol Services' and from the
  129.       configuration panel, select the installation drive to install to.  Change
  130.       the network adapter by selecting 'Change adapter' and highlighting 'IBM
  131.       PCMCIA Token-Ring Network Adapters'.  Select 'OK' to continue.  IBM
  132.       NETBIOS and IBM TCP/IP are the default protocols added for the adapter.
  133.       Add any additional protocols as instructed by the network administrator.
  134.  
  135.    3. Select 'Network Adapters for File and Print Sharing' and verify that
  136.       Adapter 0 is checked and is shown as the IBM PCMCIA Token-Ring adapter.
  137.  
  138.    4. Select 'User ID and Password' and fill in the information as instructed
  139.       by the network administrator.
  140.  
  141.  For TCP/IP Services:
  142.  
  143.    1. Select the 'TCP/IP Services' and from the configuration panel, select the
  144.       installation drive to install TCP/IP to.  Fill in the rest of the
  145.       required information as instructed by the network administrator.
  146.  
  147.    Note:  TCP/IP Services do not need to be configured at this point of the
  148.           installation.  They can be configured later using the TCP/IP
  149.           Configuration from the OS/2 System Setup folder.
  150.  
  151.    Select 'Install' and proceed with the rest of the installation.
  152.  
  153. Note: Thinkpad Personalization can be installed and run, just make sure to
  154.       have the Thinkpad Utility Diskette 2 available during the install.

  157. ***  Internet Connection via Modem Support (no LAN) ***
  158.  
  159.  
  160. Note: This section is for installing only the modem version of the Internet
  161.       Connection with no LAN connectivity.
  162.  
  163. From the OS/2 Warp Setup and Installation panel for networking services, select 'TCP/IP Services' and then
  164.   select 'Next' to proceed to the 'Welcome to Configuration' panel.
  165.  
  166. Select 'Network Adapters and Protocol Services' and from the configuration
  167. panel, select the installation drive to install to.  Change the network
  168. adapter by selecting 'Change adapter' and highlighting 'IBM Null MAC Driver'.
  169. Select 'OK' to continue.  IBM TCP/IP will be the only protocol added for the
  170. adapter, and it is the only one necessary for the Internet Connection to
  171. function.  Do not select TCP/IP Services from this configuration, no
  172. configuration is required.  Select install to proceed with the installation.

  175. ***  Installing Thinkpad Features ***
  176.  
  177. Install the Thinkpad Features for OS/2 using the INSTALL2 program from the
  178. Thinkpad Utilities for OS/2 diskette.  The INSTALL2 program can be run from
  179. an OS/2 window.  Remove the check on the Install Personalization Editor and
  180. select Install to complete the installation.
  181.  
  182. Note: Thinkpad Personalization can be installed and run, just make sure to
  183.       have the Thinkpad Utilities for DOS Diskette available during the
  184.       install.

  187. ***  Video Installation ***
  188.  
  189. Install the Video Disk for OS/2 Warp by inserting the respective diskette for
  190. the Thinkpad being used and type INSTALL x, where x is the drive in which OS/2
  191. is installed; and follow the instructions.
